To be so sick of cigarette smoke everywhere I go?

And I do mean everywhere. Walking to the train station, people walking ahead of me smoking and I can't avoid it. Walking into the train station, at least half a dozen people desperately puffing away before they have to get on a train for max. 25 mins. Breathing out the last cloud of smoke as they get on the train and then their breath stinks up the carriage. Lighting up as soon as they leave the station at the other end. Walking from the tube station to work. Outside the building entrance when I go out for lunch. Same story on my way home. When I'm at home, can't have the balcony door or any windows open as other people's smoke wafts in. If it's not cigarette smoke it's that sickly sweet vapour. I just hate it so much, and I'm so aware of how bad it is for people - and smokers choose to do it, the people around them have no choice about breathing it in. If it were up to me it'd be illegal.

And please, please, no ridiculous comparisons to exhaust fumes (not that I drive anyway). Cars etc at least have a highly useful function, they get you from A to B. Smoking has literally not one single redeeming quality to make it worth all the negative aspects.

I think some people want smokers to "step away" from the beer garden into the road. The pavement would clearly be outrageous.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/12/2016 17:26

I'm in social housing, I don't smoke weed Confused

YNBU about the smoking though. But then I used to work in a hospital where they had their own smoking room. How times change.

Cockacidal, this is a discussion thread. We are all entitled to contribute to it. You don't get to tell other posters to mind their own business.

HTH.

TitaniasCloset · 15/12/2016 17:29

Very patronising posts on here about how we must help the mentally ill to stop smoking by completely banning it. Has anyone actually asked us what we want?

lilyb84 · 15/12/2016 17:31

Smoking rooms at work! I remember the days. As a teenager in a supermarket the smokers' room was like the back of the bus - you had to be cool enough Grin

I was talking about it in the context of you fussing about what other people do in pub gardens, not about discussing it on here. I'm sure that was perfectly obvious.

DeepanKrispanEven · 15/12/2016 17:50

So you were saying I shouldn't express my views, Cockacidal. Don't try to slide out of it.

Manumission · 15/12/2016 17:52

This went loopy quickly.

MrsMattBomer · 15/12/2016 18:43

Ah smoking rooms. I'm old enough that when I started teaching you could still smoke in the staff room. Those were the days.

I'd probably end up taking up smoking again if they brought that back. There was nothing better than opening the door and a huge cloud of Players No. 6, Pall Mall and Silk Cut engulfing you.

WanderingNotLost · 15/12/2016 19:12

I'm an outdoors person in that I really don't like being cooped up indoors for a long time. But apparently if I don't want to breathe in other people's fumes that's my only option, because outside belongs to them and fuck you if you have a problem with it.

I've yet to hear someone say why they think it's ok that others have no choice but to breathe in their smoke. There are plenty of smokers here on this thread hurling accusations of hysteria at me... let's here your nice reasoned argument as to why it's alright to poison other people's lungs just because you like doing it to yourselves. Anybody??

I have some MH issues and used to smoke. I don't judge anyone for smoking because I don't know if they're going through similar things that I did/do.

I vape now (over a year since I quit) and am proud of myself. I am working on my MH all the time and sometimes feel that I can't cope without my old crutch (fags). But I can, and am getting stronger. Don't know where I'd be without the vape, tbh. Me and DH want to TTC soon and I know no nicotine is the best but if I have to vape, for my sanity, I will. At a low nicotine level.

So, in short, I hate cigarettes, I think they're one of the most insidious inventions of all time (up there with the H Bomb). But I don't judge. OP, if you think London's bad, stay away from Paris and Barcelona!

paxillin · 15/12/2016 19:53

a lot of them smoke weed as well (partly social housing)

I see the bun fight about the smoking was a bit too peaceful for your liking. You tried to see if a casual bit of benefit bashing and snobbery might work.

purplefizz26 · 15/12/2016 20:00

It is disgusting.

I don't understand why people do it.

Many people live in fear of getting cancer and other life threatening diseases, yet happily puff away on cigs knowing full well it is proven to cause several cancers, lung disease, heart disease, strokes and many more... absolutely fucking bizarre.

But, they have been made to stay outside of public places to smoke, and times have changed dramatically when it comes to smoking, so not much we can do!

AgentCooper · 15/12/2016 20:06

I don't know that happily is the right word there, purple. It's a horrible addiction. And I'd fully support banning the sale of them to anybody who hadn't already started, but that's impossible.

FruitCider · 15/12/2016 20:38

It's not bizarre. It's called addiction.

'I'm an outdoors person in that I really don't like being cooped up indoors for a long time. But apparently if I don't want to breathe in other people's fumes that's my only option, because outside belongs to them and fuck you if you have a problem with it. '

The outdoors belongs to everyone. People can smoke in it, run cars in it, wear perfume in it, have BO in it, fart in it, belch in it, eat food on the street in it and we all have to just rub along.

Lovin' this definition of 'outdoors person'. 'I like to go on my balcony and sit in beer gardens in good weather, so I'm an outdoors person.'

user1481214040 · 16/12/2016 16:05

I like the smell of fresh tobacco smoke. Sometimes even follow smokers for a little sniff.

SantaPleaseBringMeEwanMcGregor · 16/12/2016 18:00

Oh come on, how much cigarette smoke could you realistically inhale when out running?

It doesn't take much! My best friend can walk through one small cloud of it and it sets off a major asthma attack. I enjoy the scent of a freshly lit cigarette outdoors, but stale smoke just makes me choke!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 16/12/2016 18:33

I know what its like to be imprisoned in your home by smokers I had them on either side at one point, and the smoke came straight in my house about 5 - 15 on one side and two regulars on the other It was hellish and I supposed if your enduring this at home, its worse for you when your out too.

Now our smokers have gone its amazing and I dont care about smokers on the street so much as you can walk and move away, but regular smokers every hour or so is awful.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 17/12/2016 18:57

lilyb yes it was very strange. I used to be the only non smoker in my workforce but they all used to gravitate to the smokers room anyway so I used to go with them and be the only one not lighting up but happily sat in a cloud of smoke Grin

It was turned into a consultants room not long after the smoking ban came in.

Nowadays I can't even go to a fireworks display without the bonfire yards away setting my asthma off. Blush
