To not let my taxi driver into my home to use the loo?

Jumped in taxi that I hailed from the street. Driver asked me where are we going, I gave him the address.
He then asked me if it is my home. I said yes. Then he asked if he can use my bathroom when we get there. I said "excuse me?" (Radio was blaring and so I wasn't sure what I heard). He asked again saying it's one of the problems being a taxi driver....

I was on backfoot and said oh yes of course! Confused even though I really didn't like the idea.

Dh is at home and will be there when I get in...

However i got a little braver as the journey went on (20mins) and asked that he instead pull into a petrol station on the way and use the facilities there. He said alright... then I felt guilty for some strange reason. (I'm a people pleaser) so told him it was that I'd hate him to be uncomfortable and traffic was bad. He said ok but was quiet the rest of the way home after being all chat! Hmm.

Aibu to not want to be put in that awkward position? If he needed to go to the loo that badly he shouldn't have taken the job. Or should I have let him into my home to use my bathroom?

As it turned out, I've just got in and dh is not home yet - so I'm glad I hadn't said yes now!

Yanbu at all.

Ughthatstinks · 14/12/2016 16:54

YANBU and hes a chancer. Safe home!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 14/12/2016 16:55

YSNBU / completely inappropriate of him and a little dodgy. Would he really have expected you to let a complete stranger into your home? You did absolutely the right thing.

FlyingElbows · 14/12/2016 16:55

Tbh I think you should inform the company he works for. I'm sure he's not a danger to people but it's not an appropriate thing to ask and particularly not a lone woman. Sounds like a bit of a reminder about appropriate boundaries with fares would be useful.

facepalming · 14/12/2016 16:57

definately nbu!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/12/2016 17:08

YNBU. How do you know he wasn't planning on attacking you or robbing you. You dont.
There are plenty of pubs he can go to. Don't feel guilty. .

Katy07 · 14/12/2016 17:08

Definitely unreasonable and I'm actually with FlyingElbows on this - tell his company. It's inappropriate to be asking a woman on her own. No doubt he was perfectly decent but it's too risky these days. And as a taxi driver he must know where all the available toilets are in the area.

Janey50 · 14/12/2016 17:09

OP you were definitely not BU. This happened to me once, quite a few years ago, when I used minicabs more frequently. Booked it by phone, picked me up from my DM's. Barely said a word the entire 25 minute journey. When we pulled up outside my flat,he asked if he could come in and use the toilet. I was like Shock but managed to hide it. Thinking quickly,I said 'This isn't my house,it's my friend's,sorry but she's a bit funny about -strange men- strangers coming into her home'. I thought 'What a damn cheek!'. I would be going into an empty flat,no way was I letting in some bloke that I didn't know!

oldlaundbooth · 14/12/2016 17:11

YANBU.

Putsomepeasonit · 14/12/2016 17:11

Yanbu. Do not feel guilty at all, you did the right thing.

adornorising · 14/12/2016 17:12

Whatever his intentions, he overstepped a mark. You are not BU and also think you should let his company know.

And his silence was a reflection of the fact he'd overstepped the mark, not something you should feel bad about!

Janey50 · 14/12/2016 17:12

Meant to add,it takes a particularly dim-witted man to ask a lone woman to let him in her house to use the toilet! They should at least have the sense to ask another man,or use a pub toilet!

5000candlesinthewind · 14/12/2016 17:14

Yanbu for not wanting a stranger in your home.

Of course he could have just needed a wee, doesn't mean he is a serial killer like some posters have assumed Hmm

bummymummy77 · 14/12/2016 17:14

I'd tell the company. I was assaulted by a taxi driver in broad daylight. As have a couple of my friends have been. It happens. Lots.

If this wasn't his plan he needs to be pulled up on what is appropriate behaviour anyway.

celeste84 · 14/12/2016 17:15

Na i wouldn't have either. He knows the job he should know where public loos are around where he drives so he can quickly nip off. You have no idea who this guy is.

Klaphat · 14/12/2016 17:18

Utterly inappropriate. So inappropriate that I wonder what his intentions were. A close relative was very much involved in the taxi business for many years and they would never have done this, or approved of a driver doing this.

KayTee87 · 14/12/2016 17:20

Yanbu - I know someone that was raped by a taxi driver who she had let in to use her toilet.

GreatFuckability · 14/12/2016 17:20

Yanbu to refuse, but neither is he unreasonable to ask.

Ankleswingers · 14/12/2016 17:22

YANBU . I wouldn't have let him in either.

He may well have been genuinely needing the toilet but as pp have said there are plenty of other places for him to go to use if he was desperate.

You can never be too careful.

Renniehorta · 14/12/2016 17:23

This is the plot of a French film I saw recently. The taxi driver ended up being accused falsely of abducting a child, because his finger prints were found in the house.

Putsomepeasonit · 14/12/2016 17:26

He is definitely unreasonable to ask. It doesn't take much imagination for a man to consider that a woman on her own might feel unsafe having a stranger in her home. He's unreasonable to put OP in that position where she may feel like she has to be polite and say yes.

AnyFucker · 14/12/2016 17:27

I think your first mistake was hailing a taxi from the street. Are you sure he was properly licensed ?

YelloDraw · 14/12/2016 17:28

No fucking way.

Even if his intentions were just to have a wee (which I am sure they are) he has a fantastic lack of self awareness to to think it is appropriate to ask.

Capricorn76 · 14/12/2016 17:30

If you didn't book him and hailed from the street you're not even sure if he was a licensed cab. Dangerous.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/12/2016 17:30

No I woulden't. I have been using taxis for years and never had this. Just tell him to use a MacDonalds or Petrol station. You don't know him, he could be anyone, if your alone at home.
