Which part of my brain to listen to?!

Hi, I had a smear last week (regular, 3 yearly one) and the Nurse said I bled a little and I had 'lump' on my cervix that she thought looked like a cyst but was larger than usual so she wanted to refer to colposcopy on a routine appointment. Now, the sensible part of my brain reminds me that she thinks its a cyst (so, no big deal) BUT the neurotic part of my brain keep going 'well, if she thought it was a cyst why is she referring at all'?! And: 'what if it's not a cyst' etc etc. AIBU?

Usually if they're sure it's Cancerous they'll tell you. Aunt was told at this stage that her lump looked cancerous and the biopsy was just a formality, even though it wasn't big. So have hope! Flowers

She has referred you on as anything unusual will have to be checked. It's her job to perform the smears, not to diagnose you or interpret the results. I would be reassured by the fact she's referring you as a routine appointment, if she suspected cancer it would be an urgent referral.

They have to be so careful and cover their bases. Anything unusual has to be referred and like a OP said if she was concerned it would have been urgent. Don't worry.

I got referred for cervical erosion (not serious just some cells from the interior of the cervix on the outside). They like to double check anything unusual. You even get to see your own cervix on screenConfused

Thanks! I think it's just the confusion of being told it's probably a cyst but then getting a referral anyway - makes you think the nurse has a suspicion that it's something else! And I also have the wait fro the appointment (about 6 weeks) and before that my smear results (2-3 weeks). God knows what I'm going to be like if they come back abnormal...Anyway, I started a similar thread in General Health so I don't want to bother people with 2 threads about my panic!!
