Just that. Settle a minor disagreement please - is it fine to give a 6yo steak cooked medium rare, or should they have it well done?

WHY THE FUCK IS THERE CHEESE ON THAT STEAK?!?! What the hell is that?!

HaveNoSocks · 13/12/2016 20:40

In Geneva there used to have steak tartare on the kids menu, I'd see toddlers tucking in to their raw steak all the time.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 20:43

Well... that's because we know what's tasty, have ;) (jk! English pudding is great!!)

DragonNoodleCake · 13/12/2016 21:02

Totally fine!!

MidniteScribbler2 · 13/12/2016 21:51

I would (and do) though I have been to a restaurant where they refused to serve a child anything other than a well done steak.

Sounds like a shit restaurant. Every chef I know gets the grumps if anyone suggests steak be cooked well done. We even had one come out of the kitchen one day and beg my friend to let him cook it properly.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 13/12/2016 21:59

Cheese? On steak? Shock

(Garlic? On bread?)

TheProblemOfSusan · 13/12/2016 22:02

I could be completely wrong about this and would welcome being corrected, but isn't the inside of a steak actually heated through enough for food safety once the juices have turned red? So it's not actually 'raw', like it is with a proper blue steak - it's cooked, it's just not overcooked?

Personally I'm a fan of the UK version of rare which is a tad too juicy for me in France so I say medium rare there. But seconding the people who said you should order it how you like, even if you like it well done - you like what you like. I can't abide boiled veg for example which I know a lot of people are keen on.

Om nom nom...

"It's the future, I've tasted it...."

A chef once came out of the bowels of the restaurant to complain about the person who asked for ketchup instead of his bearnaise. I said that was me. If I'd wanted Windolene with my chips it would still have had nothing to do with him

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2016 22:17

Steak should be served Just wipe its ass and put it on the plate
love rare raw beef

Ohdearducks · 13/12/2016 22:20

Minced or chopped beef needs cooking through due to contact throughout the meat with air /bacteria with steak the inner meat is untouched by air so only the outside needs cooking to kill bacteria. It's fine.

cushioncovers · 13/12/2016 22:33

My youngest has alwAys liked his steak medium rare right from when he first tried some of mine as a toddler he has never been ill from it nor have I.

limitedperiodonly · 14/12/2016 11:12

Works for us Arf.

alibubbles · 14/12/2016 11:36

It should be rare! My daughter was eating steak tartare from 6, she is real carnivore. She sent a steak back once, very politely said, I am sorry ,my steak is overcooked, I asked for it rare, the waiter said to her you won't like it rare! Erm, I think she knows how she likes it cooked, says I!

WhiskyAndTwiglets · 14/12/2016 12:25

^^ my little one has done that too and sent one back politely. Family members work in the industry and she's known since she was a toddler different cuts and different ways.
A great thing to do with any child is to cut a piece into four and actually show them the difference when cooking. Let them carefully touch it with their fingertips in the pan as well to feel the difference in springiness.
Yeah, this is going to bite me on the bum when she's a teenager and turns vegan or something 🙄😂🙈

spooniestudent · 15/12/2016 15:42

I don't think I could cook a steak until it was ruined well done. it's blue or rare in our house

Oblomov16 · 15/12/2016 15:56

Medium rare is the way a steak is supposed to be cooked. Apparently. So why not for a 6 year old?

Oblomov16 · 15/12/2016 15:57

Bacteria? Oh purlease.
Well done is probably more wrong!! Ha ha.

There's guidelines about only giving DCs of 5 and under, meat that is well done. I'd still follow those guidelines if they were 6

What guidelines is that then? From who?

Soubriquet · 15/12/2016 16:07

I only eat my steak well done

If I wanted bloody meat I'll go and take a bite straight out of the cow Grin

IJustWantABrew · 15/12/2016 16:08

Absolutely no one should eat steak well done. It should only be eaten medium rare. Hmmmmmm steak Grin
