Just that. Settle a minor disagreement please - is it fine to give a 6yo steak cooked medium rare, or should they have it well done?

My DS had it as husband first food. I'd just fed him and had him on my lap whilst I ate a steak baguette. Part way through talking to my friend I realised he had latched on to the sirloin Smile

OhTheRoses · 13/12/2016 18:45

It's fine an not a waste.

poisonedbypen · 13/12/2016 18:45

The issue is with rare burgers - mincing the meat mixes the bacteria from the outside into the middle. Steak only has bacteria on the outside which are killed when it is cooked. For this reason I wouldn't give them steak tartare, but then I would eat it either.

Doublejeopardy · 13/12/2016 18:50

Poisoned is spot on steak fine but burgers aren't. TBH Westminster council are getting really funny about serving less than medium burgers to anyone let alone children

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/12/2016 18:51

Yes, mince needs to be cooked right through although there does seem to be a craze for rare burgers which I don't know how they get away with as it goes against all basic food hygiene rulesConfused

Artandco · 13/12/2016 18:56

Yep mine eat sushi also

Idiotxit · 13/12/2016 18:58

Another vote for fine for medium steak, but I always make sure burgers are well-done and not pink inside.

Stopyourhavering · 13/12/2016 18:59

Well done steak is vile why ruin a beautiful piece of meat

Crumbs1 · 13/12/2016 19:00

My kids are snails and worms from the garden so I can't see a steak will hurt.

lalalalyra · 13/12/2016 19:00

I think it's absolutely fine. I also don't see why it would be regrded as a waste of a steak either.

Buscake · 13/12/2016 19:01

Mine are 5,4 & 1 and all three scoff rare or medium/rare steak when they get the chance

Lovelybangers · 13/12/2016 19:01

I wouldn't give anyone a well done steak.

Waste of good meat.

gunsandbanjos · 13/12/2016 19:02

I fed DD medium rare steak from about age 3? Thats generally how I eat mine (or rare depending on quality) so we'd just share.

Pollyanna9 · 13/12/2016 19:04

My DD since about 8 or 9 had a firm preference for medium rare. She likes what she calls the 'berry juices'!!!

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 13/12/2016 19:05

No problem with rare steak as others have said, but there's no way I'd give a small child sushi. Apex predator fish and sea creatures in general are full of mercury contamination.

LittleBooInABox · 13/12/2016 19:06

If it's what they like then fine. DS has had some of mine medium rare before.

I would get him his own but he wouldn't eat all of it. Not a huge eater.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 19:07

Of course, the kid deserves a steak they actually like.

And seriously... isn't the risk much higher in minced meat? So, I'd understand being iffy about a medium rare burge

Branleuse · 13/12/2016 19:09

another one saying its fine. My kids have theirs medium rare

BeyondTheHarpy · 13/12/2016 19:10

Poor kid getting a burnt steak... Wink

Sparlklesilverglitter · 13/12/2016 19:11

I think it's completely fine. My DD is only a baby but my god daughter (7) has medium rare steak when I go out with her and my friend.

I'd be more worried about a minced steak burger as its all mixed up so the outside is inside etc and the bacteria in that

NotYoda · 13/12/2016 19:13

Fine

What do you think they do in France? (Special place of perfect parenting Grin)

MrsMattBomer · 13/12/2016 19:14

DP has his well done because he's a heathen but me and DS2 eat Medium rare and always have. No health effects. DS1 has his blue rare and same again, no damage or anything.

Statistically, Steak could pretty much be eaten raw with no damage as long as you made sure it was washed. Steak tartare is minced steak served raw.

AndNowItsSeven · 13/12/2016 19:14

I only have steak well done or it's fleshy and raw.
