Just that. Settle a minor disagreement please - is it fine to give a 6yo steak cooked medium rare, or should they have it well done?

I gave it to my four year old... can't see issue.

Northend77 · 13/12/2016 19:16

I had a similar experience Okkitokkiunga but with eggs. Ordered my twins breakfast (they were almost 2 at the time) in a garden centre restaurant and they stated that those would be done well, as if I'd forgotten to ask so I said "no, they like them runny please!" and was met with a raised eyebrow!! They still came out hard! The girls audibly voiced their disappointment by crying and loudly saying "dip dip"

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 13/12/2016 19:16

If he likes it, give him it. there are plenty cultures where people eat raw meat with no ill effects.

TB, I think most of these "rules" are just so you can't sue the backside off someone if they do end up with an upset tummy (which can happen at any time, as you will be aware_.

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 13/12/2016 19:19

I was wondering about steak tartare MrsMatt. I suppose partially heating it stimulates bacterial activity which means a burger is more dodgy than tartare.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/12/2016 19:29

Medium rare burgers are a kids' menu standard in France. Personally I steer clear in a restaurant, but when I make my own burgers in the magimix at home, my DH and DS like them a bit pink in the middle.

MrsMattBomer · 13/12/2016 19:30

Yep. As long as you buy your steak from a butcher, you'll be fine. I wouldn't trust making steak tartare with supermarket steak, but from a butcher who actually knows what he's doing when he cuts the meat, it'll be fine.

Even burgers now (well, the ones made with proper ingredients) are served slightly pink in some places.

limitedperiodonly · 13/12/2016 19:33

That's the way I prefer steak but it's really funny to witness MNetters tripping over themselves to declare that they prefer their steak blue and condemning those who want it well done.

You've paid for it. You have it done the way you like it.

Memoires · 13/12/2016 19:33

DD has been eating steak rare since she was 4 or 5. These days, she's like me and has it blue.

MrsMattBomer · 13/12/2016 19:37

I agree limitedperiodonly I don't like well done but I don't care at all if people do. Whenever people have steak at ours I always ask how they want it cooked and as I'm already cooking it for DP it doesn't matter.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 19:39

I've always had my steak medium rare (sometimes a bit rarer). Ever since I was... maybe 4? I've never gotten sick. Neither has my brood of cousins.

My half little brothers love sushi. They have had it maybe... twice a year (nowadays more often) since they were little.

Did the 'medium rare steak opposer' give her children processed food? Food with a high salt content (chips, crisps?) Sugar? Most likely at least one of these (which is normal, btw! I'm not saying it's wrong). These things aren't healthy and didn't kill her kiddo either.

A medium rare steak or sushi (sometimes!) should be fine.

chocolateworshipper · 13/12/2016 19:41

Tell DM to go to France and order a steak "well done." The look of contempt on the waiter's face will tell her all she needs to know.

gobbynorthernbird · 13/12/2016 19:41

Surely it depends on the cut?

OhSoggyBiscuit · 13/12/2016 19:42

Medium rare steak is beautiful. I had a lovely piece of beef joint cooked to medium rare the other day...tender, melt in the mouth and so juicy and delicious. My Mum had a tendency to overcook beef so it was chewy and dry..a real shame.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 19:43

chicolate

Oh no, she may just get the oldest piece of meat they still had (one of the ones that were meant to be thrown away,,,).

Can't taste that anyway when it's well done.

People should eat what they want, however. DD should and MIL should...

pointythings · 13/12/2016 19:44

Mine were eating it rare at that age. Well done steak - sacrilege!

IAmNotAWitch · 13/12/2016 19:46

DS2 will only eat mostly raw meat/seafood. Once its cooked he hates it. Same for most other foods to be honest.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/12/2016 19:46

I wouldn't order my meal to win the approval of a random waiter. I like my steak medium rare. But if I'm ordering in France I say "medium" and I tends to turn up the equivalent of British medium rare.

n0ne · 13/12/2016 19:47

I always went the principle which I might have made up that once they turn 2, anything goes. Rare meat, blue cheese, sushi, paté, it's all good.

ChickyDuck · 13/12/2016 19:49

The way restaurants get round the well-done-burger rule is by searing the outside of big bits of steak and then mincing it themselves, that way the outer bacteria is killed pre-mincing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/12/2016 19:50

Chicky- aha, thanks!Smile

limitedperiodonly · 13/12/2016 19:54

MrsMattBomer My mum loved going out to dinner and was great company but was a very plain eater. We chose two local restaurants because they did steak and chips or fish grilled or braised with vegetables.

She would always whisper to me: 'Tell them I don't want any blood. But don't upset them.' And I'd whisper back: 'Don't worry mum.'

Once I saw her trying not to make a fuss by miserably picking around the outside of her steak which wasn't well done enough and eating all the chips.

I politely sent it back and they didn't reheat it. They did a totally new steak and chips and gave us a doggy bag of the first steak for her cat. That is service. Grin

GravyAndShite · 13/12/2016 20:05

Well, that was delicious and guilt free thanks to all your comments! Grin

DS would give someone a Hmm look if they tried to serve him anything other than a medium rare steak.
