To think smoking weed outside the hospital is inappropriate

Just finished my shift, go out to catch my bus, and walk through a group of people and a thick smog of weed smoke. Now, I have nothing against people smoking it, but surely there's a time and a place and a building where people die and babies are born and somewhere so professional and kids come and go isn't one of them? Then, in response to my surprised, likely dirty, look, was shouted at by one of the (middle aged) women with the patient that 'she's not afraid to bang me out even if I am twice the size of her'.

Feel like I should have just stayed at home today, was a crap shift too.

YANBU. Here you aren't allowed to smoke anywhere on the hospital campus.

MinesAGin · 13/12/2016 13:32

Just ridiculous that people smoke at all outside a hospital, never mind smoking week. And yelling at other people? Wtf!

Sirzy · 13/12/2016 13:33

People smoking anything near entrances or paths to hospitals is wrong

ISaySteadyOn · 13/12/2016 13:33

YANBU. It smells horrible.

OopsDearyMe · 13/12/2016 13:35

Er its illegal, they shouldn't smoke it full stop! I constantly see parents (loosly termed) at school puffing on em... People could not care less

Lireal · 13/12/2016 13:35

It's always nice to take your newborn baby/ recovering patient out through a cloud of smoke near the door I think.
Yanbu. The loudmouth woman sounds delightful. No advise but hope you have a better day. Perhaps we could write a letter to your hospital manager or the press?Name and shame!

Sparlklesilverglitter · 13/12/2016 13:38

The hospital here has a no smoking policy for the whole hospital grounds, shame yours doesn't.

If somebody wants to smoke weed that is there call but some places (like a hospital) are not appropriate places to smoke it

Brightsmoke · 13/12/2016 13:39

I am completely against anyone smoking it in public full stop. I don't want to walk down the street and smell it, its disgusting!! If people smoke it in the private of their own home, I'm fine with that, there is no need to do it in public! Yuck

5foot5 · 13/12/2016 13:40

Just ridiculous that people smoke at all outside a hospital,

YANBU to be upset and annoyed at the aggressive way the woman shouted at you. And probably YANBU to feel a public place is not appropriate for smoking weed.

But comments like the one highlighted - I mean where should the smokers go? Obviously in an ideal world they would all quit smoking and live happily ever after. But it isn't ideal and as they are not allowed to smoke within the hospital premises then what can you expect but that people will gather as near he entrance as is allowed.

(I am a non-smoker and have never smoked before you ask)

Ohmuther · 13/12/2016 13:40

YANBU
but there is a proven link for a minority between smoking weed and mental health issues.
Thank you for your shift and your hard work. It may not seem appreciated but the NHS is bloody wonderful only because of the wonderful people who work in it.

MadisonAvenue · 13/12/2016 13:41

YANBU!
There seems to be more and more people smoking weed while out and about now. It smells horrible.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 13/12/2016 13:43

Of course you're not being unreasonable, although I don't think it makes any difference whether it's weed or plain fags.

I don't believe you ever thought you were being unreasonable though, did you? Grin

reallyanotherone · 13/12/2016 13:44

Kch by any chance?

QueefChegwin · 13/12/2016 13:45

My sister was on the post natal ward for a week a few years ago. A woman in a single room was smoking weed in there with her new baby in the room. Another in her ward just kept going to the nearest shops for fags and booze and disappearing for ages and just leaving the baby in her cubicle. Some people just don't give a shit.

Aroundtheworldandback · 13/12/2016 13:47

I've seen doctors smoking outside. Idiots

Gutted2016 · 13/12/2016 13:51

Where should they go, 5foot5?

Er, away from people that choose not to pollute their bodies. In this situation, sick and potentially dying people. Surely that's the decent thing to do?

FannyWisdom · 13/12/2016 13:52

Aren't there any designated smoking areas?
Was it the patient smoking?

Sirzy · 13/12/2016 13:54

Smokers should move well away from doors and busy areas of paths.

Someone's right to smoke doesn't outweigh my sons right to get into a and e during an asthma attack without it being further aggravated by cigarette smoke!

Gutted2016 · 13/12/2016 13:57

At our hospital, the smoking hut is a whole 15ft from the entrance and even that is too far for some of these rotters to walk.

Sybys · 13/12/2016 14:09

It's legal for medicinal purposes where I live, so wouldn't bat an eyelid.

But in your case, the smoker sounds unpleasant regardless of whether it was for any sort of medicinal need.

ragz134 · 13/12/2016 14:37

I'd have called hospital security/police about the smoking and the threatening behaviour. Totally out of order.

sj257 · 13/12/2016 14:45

Smoking outside the hospital pisses me off full stop. Fed up of trying to hold my breath so I don't get a lungful when I'm going or antenatal appointments grr

OhhBetty · 13/12/2016 14:53

You'd think the woman would be a bit more chilled out!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/12/2016 14:58

definitely ask reception to call security...
