Dad on bus 'look at all these people sitting who won't let a child have a seat'

Just that really, he got on with two boys aged about 10 and 8. People looked at each other and laughed. Old enough to stand surely.

YANBU - children taking seats should stand for adults. And so should people looking under the age of 40 for anyone looking over the age of 70.

A train company once told me I had no right to a seat unless at least 20+ weeks pregnant Hmm

PeachyTheSanctiMoanyArse · 12/12/2016 18:33

I'd just pop my eight year old on my lap, ten is fine to stand (eight probably is but mine's a bit wobbly). Sorted. I'd probably offer my seat to a child though if they looked worried or a bit unsure.

I wouldn't expect anyone to stand on the basis of looking well though, DS1 is 17 and looks healthy but passes out with no notice. They've been taught though that when able, they have to stand if needed.

BratFarrarsPony · 12/12/2016 18:34

xmb - what if you are between the ages of 40 and 70? do you just sit or stand as appropriate?

ghostspirit · 12/12/2016 18:34

My understanding is when paying fear we have a right to travel. Not the right for a seat.

Schulte · 12/12/2016 18:35

And btw I would be OFFENDED if a child stood up for me! I hope I don't look that old and frail...

Fransisco · 12/12/2016 18:36

no right to a seat

I thought it was normal for people to give up their seats for pregnant ladies. And for children to give up their seats to adults.

Oh yes I think it's normal for people to give up seats for people less able to stand. If my child was sitting and someone needs the seat then they give up the seat and stand.

Both adult and child can stand. Why should it be the child that does?

I've never seen a single child fall on a bus

Children have excellent balance, for example look at the little ones on the ski slopes!

RodeoBunny · 12/12/2016 18:46

Had to jump in here... when I was pretty much full-term with dc1 I got on the bus (second to last in queue as had waited my turn) when the bloke behind told his son to basically push past me and go to sit down... when I confronted him about it he actually said something like 'well no one lets the child first to get a seat' to which I loudly replied 'well no one lets the pregnant woman on either!'.... he sensibly kept his mouth shut then. The really stupid thing was the bus was not that busy and everyone who got on got a seat, with 1 or 2 spare!!! Still makes me furious thinking about it and this was 3 years ago Angry

Err, call me old fashioned but I raised my kids to always offer their seat to an adult standing, not the other way round.

pinkstripeycat · 12/12/2016 18:59

My kids, same age, would love to bus surf as I did as a child. You have told hold on tightly but it's fun trying to keep your balance in the aisle.

Me too Trap

ghostspirit · 12/12/2016 19:02

I will stay on the fence I think.

But what if I'm sitting down. My child and other children/adults are standing. Can I then offer my child the seat I'm.sitting on
Or is that nothe ok?

I get the think of others thing. Does that work both ways?.

I do agree a child is less likely to get hurt if they fall. And I think I would rather a child fell on me rather than am adult Grin

mymatemax · 12/12/2016 19:05

I would be horrified if one of my children didn't offer their seat to an adult. Just good manners.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 12/12/2016 19:07

I would never expect my children to sit while adults stood!

But I feel for the lady who was struggling with her baby, toddler and 5 y/o and I'd have definitely let her son share a seat with my son.

squiz81 · 12/12/2016 19:07

When I saw the thread title I thought it was a new line in 'wheels on the bus' in which case you would have BU as that scans really badly Grin

riceuten · 12/12/2016 19:10

I don't think anyone able bodied adult has more right to sit than a child

Perhaps - but should an able-bodied adult give a seat up for a child? Because lots of people here (previously) thought so.

WhatwouldJoydo · 12/12/2016 19:10

I used to live somewhere where school children (secondary) were expected to wait until all adults were seated before piling on and finding a seat. Seats were always vacated for me by children (I was pregnant with twins though!)
