to not want to bring ds to xmas party

Family Xmas party at sisters house. My ds is excited to see his cousins. Brother who is coming with wife announced yesterday their ds has a chest and ear infection and won't be going.
today they announce their ds has been put on antibiotics so will be ok to come.
aibu in not wanting to go now and risk infecting my ds? He picks up everything so bound to get it and they always in close contact when they play.
ds has lots on at school with Xmas show and parties coming up so don't want to risk him ending up ill and missing his activities?

I'm actually pretty pissed off. Ds has been looking forward to this all day and I mite not be able to bring him.

Is a chest infection contagious? I wouldn't have thought so?

Chest and ear infections are most commonly brought on by cold and flu virus which is highly contagious obviously. Chest infections are still contagious as they can spread through coughing and sneezing.

He's obviously had it a while to be on antibiotics. I would be fine with it personally.

Half the country is ill with some kind of cold/ virus at the moment, the only way to avoid it would be not allowing your DS to leave to house.

ear and chest infections are usually a complication caused by a virus that some (not all) people with the virus develop. Infectious in and of themselves are not infectious. The virus that may have cause the infection (usually cold or similar virus) is infectious but usually by the time an infection has developed the original virus is better. So your nephew is likely not infectious by now anyway

How old is your son? Is he generally in good health? I think I would risk it personally, if there is a cold bug doing the rounds he will get it from his school friends anyway. Your nephew prob doesn't have the cold any more but just the ear and chest infection, very doubtful they are contagious. He will prob be better by the time of the party anyway. Go and enjoy it x

I'd go for it - there are germs everywhere at this time of year and you realistically can't avoid them.

Ear infections aren't generally thought of as infectious.
The cold that brings one on in some people can be infectious.

However chest infections are, not least because the person tends to be coughing.

Every child in the land are harbingers of skank and snot this time of year.

He'll be around children on antibiotics/with colds etc literally every day at school at the minute.

Why would I be pissed off at a child being ill? I'm pissed off because they are bringing their sick Child who could potentially infect my ds.
ds has a history of developing chest infections and croup. Has been hospitalised before so I do not want to risk it. I know realistically you can't avoid germs but when a child only yesterday had been bed bound with illness and then the next day is playing with my child, I do feel a bit anxious.
I always catch from ds chest infections too so I dont think they are unspreadable.

I would assume he has been on antibitoics well over 24 hours now.. so yes I would take Ds..

I wouldn't take ds because he has a history of severe chest problems and brittle asthma - but even then I would accept I was probably being OTT really.

It's perfectly normal for DC (and adults) to go to school/work once they start a course of antibiotics and start to feel better so why would a party be different

Up to you, obviously if ds goes to the party, but there's no point keeping him away if you're going to go and bring any bug home.

Chest infections and ear infections aren't contagious. If they were, my whole family would have spent every year on a continuous infection cycle.

Most people you encounter at this time of year will have some kind of cold.

He is on Anticiotics I cant see how your son is at risk than any other day every other person i know is coughing and sneezing it is winter kids get colds yabu and paniky if you are nervous just dont go

I expect the other boy's been looking forward to it as well, it's quite mean to expect him to stay away if he's feeling well enough to go.

My understanding of antibiotics is that they are awesome against anything bacterial, but basically useless against anything viral - or have I got that wrong? I'm sure I saw a documentary about the over prescribing of antibiotics within the nhs on viruses which was both pointless and part of the reason antibiotics will one day become less effective. I can understand your frustration OP, nobody wants a horrid illness at xmas if they can help it.
