Vile vile stuff that gives me a headache and makes me feel sick. I don't think they contain anything natural like essential oils, just loads of artificial chemicals.

They smell cheap and nasty because they are cheap and nasty.

Bejazzled · 09/12/2016 21:31

Tkmaxx usually have several types of soy or vegetable oil candles. I recently bought balsam scented Soi candles (which burn at a low temp and the melt can be used as a skin moisturiser) and Vila Hermanos, really gorgeous hotel-trade candles made in Spain. No nasties like parrafin or lead either.

Botanicbaby · 09/12/2016 23:42

YANBU vile nauseating things that they are.

I say that as someone who absolutely loves scented candles too Xmas Wink

Gillybean76 · 09/12/2016 23:59

I do like them but cannot stand the sweet scented ones,

At the moment I've got all is bright and festive cocktail.

I thought I was alone in thinking they are disgusting. I have to walk the long way round in garden centre gift shops because of the stink. I can only assume the people that buy them are those that use Febreze and have destroyed their sense of smell.

I like the Floris ones but only get them as gifts and I make them last. I used to love the lavender one.

MarieBurnham · 10/12/2016 12:36

I was hoping to get the dippique advent calendar reduced, but it went out of stock.

Anyone know somewhere to get a discount on these fab candles.

I just went into the Yankee candle shop in Milton Keynes and nearly passed out with the stink. It was truly awful

Wolpertinger · 10/12/2016 12:45

I've found my people!

Never understood the appeal of a Yankee Candle - it's a race to see if I have a headache or asthma attack first. Same as walking past a Lush store.

Vile things.

itsbetterthanabox · 10/12/2016 12:48

Yabu to claim they give you a headache.
That's psychosomatic.

dovesong · 10/12/2016 12:50

Yankee candles are hideous! I love scented candles and once went round a whole Yankee candle shop to try to find one I liked. All horrible and sickly, smelled strongly of chemicals.

PeteSwotatoes · 10/12/2016 12:51

Yanbu. I have recently been using St Eval candles because I can't afford Diptyque. They're really nice.

hollieberrie · 10/12/2016 12:56

Yabu. All is bright is the best smell in the whole wide world. Makes me so happy.

Thanks for telling me my migraines are psychosomatic Hmm

I guess, and all the people who find fragrance a mirgaine trigger are just deluded Angry

Finbar · 10/12/2016 13:13

Next time you buy a cheap candle just read the label that tells you( because they have to) just how utterly toxic these things are to fish and aquatic life and the environment in general. I was shocked.
Sadly you have to pay more and go for natural scented soy candles with a cotton wick.
Please.

ppeatfruit · 10/12/2016 13:17

You know It's not just the cheap candles either ,dh is a sucker for Penhaligan's products and their candles are EXPENSIVE but to me the smell is not much better than the 'cheapos' (though they look better).

Neaders · 10/12/2016 13:19

Yanbu
They stink, are dirty and dangerous! Scentsy is so much better

JellyWitch · 10/12/2016 13:20

I like the clean cotton and cinnamon ones but prefer to burn incense.

MarieBurnham · 10/12/2016 13:20

Today 13:06 Euphemia

I treated myself to an advent calendar - very disappointed. Most smell vile.

Was that the dipique advent calendar?

Horsegirl1 · 10/12/2016 13:21

YABU I love them

ppeatfruit · 10/12/2016 13:27

Marie The manufacturers (esp. the big ones) try to make their products with the cheapest ingredients, because apparently we buy by 'price' nowadays not quality. It makes me Xmas Sad esp. as most people can afford to pay a bit more for better stuff.

I do like Yankee but have got rather bored with them lately so after a recommendation on here on a previous candle thread I tried Flamingo candles, and ordered their melts subscription box. Really pleased with them and they last much longer than the Yankee ones.

BowieFanMk2 · 10/12/2016 14:09

I hate them as well. DS1 and DS2 bought me one a few years ago for a birthday. I only lit it once and it gave me a massive headache. I much prefer the Jo Malone or M&J ones as they aren't as overpowering with scent. Plus, with the M&J ones they're all made using ethical ingredients and £1 from every sale goes to a woman's charity.

The Yankee Candle has come in use for killing spiders though.

Toocleverbyhalf2 · 10/12/2016 14:46

I feel the same about scentsy candles. Over priced headache inducer!
