to think Yankee candles are the work of the devil

Vile vile stuff that gives me a headache and makes me feel sick. I don't think they contain anything natural like essential oils, just loads of artificial chemicals.

If so many people get unwell they probably contain something nasty that is polluting indoor air. It's not the smell. It's the chemicals. They are pretty expensive for the low quality they are IMO.

JorahsMissus Try St Eval, I like Bay and Rosemary.

TheNaze73 · 09/12/2016 15:50

They are disgusting.

Cheap & nasty. Go Baobab if you want a nice candle. The Manhattan one smells like heaven

ppeatfruit · 09/12/2016 15:53

Yes I agree Marie Someone makes a massive profit from producing total shite IMO.

SinglePringle · 09/12/2016 16:01

Apart from the awful, headache inducing scents, it's the sickeningly twee naffness of the names and 'homespun' image of them.

hmcAsWas · 09/12/2016 16:05

I quite like them - but tend to use their scented tea lights rather than the full scale version.

ppeatfruit · 09/12/2016 16:11

Yes single Like those ridiculous ads on TV about those scented plastic rubbish things for rooms.

weeblueberry · 09/12/2016 16:12

I find it interesting that so many people get headaches from the scents. I'm so so headache prone and only a couple of the scents cause a headache for me. I used to really like the foodie/sweet scents but my partner hates them so moved to fresher smells. Tend to use those now and only in the wax tart version. I've also tried to move across to soy since reading articles like this:

www.theredheadriter.com/2012/03/the-truth-about-paraffin-wax-candles-are-they-toxic/

I found a few people on Etsy who make lovely soy melts that are much gentler in scent than Yankees. :)

Butterymuffin · 09/12/2016 16:17

I really like them and am perfectly happy with other people feeling differently Smile

I do wonder, though, whether everyone shouting about how they have CHEMICALS in, avoids chemical ingredients in all their food, bathroom products, laundry products, make up, the lot? Someone will now come on to tell me that they do full research on each and every product they buy now, of course.

CrossfireHurricane · 09/12/2016 16:21

I don't mind Yankee Candles but my friend has an apple and pine needle fragrance?
Good God it is dreadful, really awful.

ppeatfruit · 09/12/2016 16:25

Yes Buttery I do avoid the mainstream stinky stuff , I HATE those laundry 'conditioners'. It costs more to buy Dr. Haushka beauty products but it's worth it to me.

The more natural Ecover stuff is much better IMO.

bookworm14 · 09/12/2016 16:26

YANBU - they are gross. Give me diptyque any day.

Liiinoo · 09/12/2016 16:26

I love some YC candles but the Christmassy/cinnamon ones are awful. I currently have quite a posh one from company called Valente. It is white neroli and lemon. Burned for half an hour or so it is lovely but any longer and it becomes overpowering.

Bjazzle · 09/12/2016 16:35

Im on the fence of if yabu, I used to love them all but when I got pregnant, the smell of any type of candle knocked me sick, ds is 3 months and I still cant stand any of the fruity ones.
Im currently using a brand I found in home bargains, gingerbread is the scent (not sure of the brand) but is better than any yankee ive ever had and is only £2.99 compared to same size yankee for £20+.

user1479495984 · 09/12/2016 16:42

You're not being unreasonable as such but I doubt there's not a single one you like... Assuming you like scented candles. I like the Christmas and foodie ones but not the floral type ones.

user1479495984 · 09/12/2016 16:44

Also I do agree in general candles don't really smell but Yankees certainly do and that's why they're expensive.

LunaLoveg00d · 09/12/2016 17:03

They're a very middle of the road candle brand. At the top end you've got your posh Diptyque and at the other end the pound shop jars, in the middle is Yankee Candle.

I quite like some of the scents and dislike others. There is a pine one which to me smells just like loo cleaner. I also dislike vanilla scents in general. I wouldn't dismiss the whole brand though, some of the scents are quite pleasant.

LunaLoveg00d · 09/12/2016 17:06

Can anyone suggest any other really nice brands which aren't any more expensive than yankee? I love a good strong, long lasting scent.

I also really like the Lily Flame tins, they are widely available and have some lovely scents. Around £9 per tin.

debbs77 · 09/12/2016 19:56

I was but now I'm a scentsy girl xxx

RortyCrankle · 09/12/2016 20:22

It's a thousand times better to make your own in a slow cooker (which is completely useless for cooking food IMO). So easy and you control how smelly it is so you don't end up with a migraine and a vile smell stuck at the back of your throat.

Bluesrunthegame · 09/12/2016 20:27

Not candles, but glitter is the work of the devil. I have 2 presents sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe waiting for DS2 to return from travelling. They have been there since last Christmas, are not very big, have never really been moved but have wrapping paper with glitter on. Every single one of my clothes now features at least one little glittery bit, at least one tiny twinkle. Clothes in the other bit of the L-shape, clothes at the other end, each now has its own little star, if not several.

Crankycunt · 09/12/2016 20:34

And they can kill birds.

Idiotxit · 09/12/2016 20:43

YANBU.

I don't care what they smell like, the jars and labels look so flipping awful that I'd never buy one. Actually, had smelled them in shops to see what the fuss is about and they smell really, really synthetic to me.

I love a nice fragranced candle though. I liked Beautannia ones but can't seem to find them recently.

drinkingchanelno5 · 09/12/2016 21:10

They are awful!

Sallystyle · 09/12/2016 21:15

I have my annual candle burning... Winter by The White Company.

Now that is a proper nice smelling candle.
