Be honest, would you be annoyed if I brought this for your child?

My friend's son has a birthday party coming up, we are kind of close (work together) and my son is in his class at school. I asked for gift ideas from his mum (so things he likes, so not exact gifts) and she said Finding Dory.

There's an amazing sale in the Disney store for a giant Large Dory Soft Toy! It's half price. Would it piss you off? Grin it's not huge, but it's big enough, see, I love soft toys so it wouldn't bother me, but DS doesn't have a lot in his room so keeps them all in a corner.

If she said FINDING DORY id assume she meant the DVD or she would just of said "Dory". Soft toys are pointless and a waste of money IMO. Why not get him the film

I hate soft toys as well - DCs have lots of them...I occasionally cull them (discreetly) but a few it is hard to get rid of as they are/were favourites, have a special meaning. I bought one of those wall storage nets because I got so fed up of moving them to make a bed and picking them up off the floor in the morning -that filled up as did several other nets etc on the back of their door and I am back to moving 20 of the stupid things off DD2's bed to make it/picking them up every day ...
The other thing I hate about them is if you want to give them to a charity shop you really should wash them first -but if you do DCs will see them drying etc then it is harder for them to disappear...
At one point we also had a massive (think 3ft) pink hippo that my dad won in a raffle ...that took a bit of getting rid of and we still have a similar sized chick - can't remember where it came from (might have been my parents and another raffle) but kind of too obvious for it to disappear ...
I do have a no more soft toys rule...that I have strictly enforced for the last few years but then DD2 won guess the bloody bear's birthday and we ended up with another. I was going to persuade DD to donate it back then they could use it again for a prize but DP Hmm got to it and pulled its tag off ...making it just another 'used' soft toy rather than an obviously new teddy... Angry
So honestly if you bought it for my DC I would be polite and they would probably love it -but inside I would be thinking fuck - not another bloody one...

Soft toys annoy me but sometimes I can't resist them! (Which is why I have several huge vacuum bags of them in the loft.... I'm slowly sending them to the charity shop!)

DS has never really been bothered with them, DD likes them and has many favourites that she cuddles at night. If my child received it and loved it I'd be happy, if it ended up shoved at the bottom of the bed it'd soon be on its way to the loft and eventually the charity shop.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 11/12/2016 20:22

I'd think that size was OK -- it's basically the same size as a pillow and that's how it would end up being used. Anything bigger would be a No.

Passenger42 · 11/12/2016 20:23

Don't buy it as it's a boring stuffed toy and ignore the suggestion of finding Dory as he will be inundated with that stuff if Mum has told others the same. It you can afford to spend £20 on a gift there are so many more interesting boy's toys in the shops. Go to B&M or Wilkinsons there are real bargains to be had.

SaltyBitch · 11/12/2016 20:24

Why not get him the film

I imagine a kid that loves a specific film, and for the parent to tell you such, means they they already have a copy.

oldjacksscrote · 11/12/2016 21:31

I wouldn't be annoyed but it would be a pita!

How about

Daydream007 · 11/12/2016 22:36

I think it's a lovely idea

Peanutandphoenix · 12/12/2016 07:10

The big kid in me wants one of them for myself.

Birdsgottafly · 12/12/2016 10:44

Mine were bought the soft toy of whatever they were into. It would just sit there, on top of the wardrobe, until it went to the charity shop, so it would be a no from me and my DD (for my GD). I think it's more meaningful to have a few, really loved soft toys.

I'd prefer the PJs or art/toy set.

MikeUniformMike · 12/12/2016 11:47

Sharky's good. The Dory is handwashable so could be passed on once it's not needed any more.

Confusednotcom · 12/12/2016 14:13

I would get a toy they can play with as it's got a certain wow factor but will take up space and once there's a new fave film will be charity shopped. Dory pyjamas (if they exist?) or a game would be more useful.

craftycarls · 12/12/2016 18:01

Just ask the mum.

bumblingmum · 12/12/2016 18:25

Yes. Mine have 100's of soft toys and they take up so much space. I would prefer something small and useful (colouring or pencil case)

SaltySeaBird · 12/12/2016 18:48

I'd hate it. I'm on a permanent soft toy cull as we don't have the space. DD got similar for her birthday (but not Disney and a recognisable character) and I'm waiting to lose it somewhere ...

SaltySeaBird · 12/12/2016 18:48

Although I do appreciate whatever she is brought, even if I personally hate it!

user1480946351 · 12/12/2016 19:11

bought, people, its bought!

Luluandizzy · 12/12/2016 19:32

Not at all. I would be very happy and greatfull x

milkymonkey · 12/12/2016 20:18

InTheDessert - we have exact same IKEA shark, ours is called Jaws, also bought for my son's 5th birthday. He has just turned 10! They didn't have them for ages but I saw recently they were back. Jaws is a firm favourite still, used as a pillow.

Buy the Dory!

RhiWrites · 12/12/2016 20:57

My favourite part of this thread is the person who bought a 7 year old a crossbow.

nushcar · 12/12/2016 21:49

Our house is overrun with soft toys so would not be my favourite choice but I guess it's what the kid likes that counts!
