I suspect that Denmark is probably similar to Sweden: the fact that the winter months are very much about snuggling up with your nearest and dearest in an environment of candles and home-baked cake must make it bloody depressing from anyone who is just visiting. It doesn't mean the natives themselves are necessarily having a miserable time. I had a great time in Sweden as a child/student/young woman.
