To ask what are you putting in your DC Christmas stockings?

Just interested in this Christmas stocking tradition in UK. I'm not British so we didn't do anything similar as a child. But now I have a DS3 and I think he'd love it. I'd love to hear what kind of things you are planning to put in your DCs Christmas stockings. Just sweets, little toys or something bigger? Would the child normally open it on Christmas morning?

We don't have a big extended family so tend to make presents from santa quite a big deal. In stocking and underneath them will be:

DD (11)
Posh headphones
Books
Pens
onsie
Knickers
Socks
Purse
Annual
Make a paper bird cage
Game
soap on a rope
campfire sandwich toaster
Head torch
Trump cards
chocolates
Satsuma

DS (9)
Football strip
Books
Chalks
onsie
Pants
Socks
wallet
apple spiral peeler
Annual
Make a paper bird solar system
Game
soap on a rope
campfire sandwich toaster
Head torch
Trump cards
chocolates
Satsuma

Then they get one present from us :-)

My children all get their sticking and come into our room to open them all together on our bed. Then they look at it all whilst dh makes the tea. Once we have drank tea then we head downstairs to make breakfast while the children play for half an hour or so. Mine are 15 12 and 6 .

mygorgeousmilo · 08/12/2016 12:21

All of mine get a variation of/different colour:
Fluffy socks
Wind up toy
Small puzzle or game
Yo-yo each
Chocolate coins
Tins that I bring out every year and fill with jellies or wafers
Christmas art stuff from Poundland

ElodieS · 08/12/2016 12:29

Ooooh I love doing stockings for DTs (4), this year they've got:

Clementine in the toe
Book
Character bubble bath
Pants, vests and socks
Colouring book
Hair bands
Chocolate coins
...and we always add a small lump of coal to keep them on their toes a bit!

My dilemma this year is whether to do a stocking for the new baby, he'll only be 3 weeks old so it isn't for him, but I don't want to ruin the magic for DTs by not doing one... Any thoughts?!

KitNeutron · 08/12/2016 12:30

Toothbrush, magic expanding flannel, smellies, chocolate coins, small toy and build a bear voucher. Mostly stuff that they need but fun versions of them! I'm very conscious of not buying random bits and bobs, mainly because I try to spend roughly the same amount on each, and they're very different ages so it's hard to level it out! I'm happy with this year's stuff.

The stockings get opened in our room, before breakfast, so small easily lost things go in them so we can keep them away from the riot of wrapping paper from main gifts! We lost £80 worth of gift vouchers one year Xmas Blush

DeleteOrDecay · 08/12/2016 13:09

Yes to buying fun versions of the stuff they need for stocking. My 4yo dd's stocking is pretty much all stuff that she needs but featuring her favourite charactersXmas Grin

Got loads of ideas from this thread so I should be able to pad out my 18month olds one a bit more now.

NerrSnerr · 08/12/2016 13:16

My 2 year old is getting slippers, socks, some Thomas minis, a woolly hat, smellies, chocolate and other bits and bobs.

JoffreyBaratheon · 08/12/2016 13:17

Poundland is great for stocking fillers. My kids (ages 14 - 27) are each getting: a Poundland christmas cracker (the jokes in them seem to have gone through Google Translate so are funny but not for the right reasons); choclate orange (also in Poundworld this year!) Toblerone (ditto), magic gloves, etc. The teenagers will also get deodorant (not because they smell but because it fits in the stocking, and I only have to buy it anyway), and for something nice, a little something from Lush - they like the man perfume, and cleansers etc in there!

JoffreyBaratheon · 08/12/2016 13:18

Oh the dog gets one as well - she's getting a deer antler as her main present then just a few hide chews.

ChocoChou · 08/12/2016 13:35

Whatever is in there you absolutely HAVE to put a satsuma in the toe. It's the law! Xmas Grin

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 08/12/2016 13:44

Traditionally there must be a tangerine. This dates back to when citrus fruits were hard to get and a seasonal treat. Also a treat of a drink which they'll have with their Christmas dinner. Mine aren't allowed squash or pop normally so something like that. I also scatter chocolate coins throughout.

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 08/12/2016 13:45

Grin crossed post ChocoChou

JoffreyBaratheon · 08/12/2016 14:08

Ah I don't do the satsuma thing as my step mother always did that and went on (and on and on) about how that's all she got for Christmas as a child... So that's 'someone else's christmas' to me. Wink

The kids leave a sherry and mince pie for Santa as well. And some kind of root vegetable for Rudolph. Us, and more recently, our oldest, always had fun carving reindeer 'teeth marks' in the parsnip and of course I drink the sherry and husband or oldest son eat the mince pie...

KitNeutron · 08/12/2016 14:09

Omg I forgot satsumas! Mine won't eat them the rest of the year but they devour them like they've been starved for a year when I put them in the stockings!

Lucyneedssleep · 08/12/2016 15:05

I tend to get Dd15 loads but get stuff she'll need that tend to last till the next year. Lots of primark PJs, underwear, slippers, socks, deodorant, cleanser, moisturiser , the cheap body sprays then throw in a few extras nail varnish , foundation, bronzer and a couple of lip glosses.

Grilledaubergines · 08/12/2016 15:15

Always a satsuma and coins and then

Ds1

Amazon echo
Pants
Headphones
Sweets
PJs
ITunes voucher
Jeans
Lynx toiletries
PS4 game

DS2

Tablet
PJs
Lego
Socks
Mug
Gaming chair (not in the sack obviously)!

LadyBaelish · 08/12/2016 15:33

DS1 (14):
Boxers
Nice pen
Sudoku book
Wooden logic puzzle
Shower gel and deoderant spray
Choc coins

DD (9):
Character knickers and socks
Smelly gel pens
Stamper set
Colouring book
Purse
Penguin toy
2 bath bombs
Choc coins

DS2 (7):
Character pants and socks
Colouring pencils
LED finger lights
Sticker book
Toy hippo
Pocket book of dinosaurs
Bubble bath
Choc coins

They open them in their rooms and then come and wake me and DH

Katedotness1963 · 08/12/2016 16:18

My teenage boys will be getting...
Coins in the toe
Satsuma
Socks
Earphones
Cologne
Concert tickets
Scratch cards
Chocolate Santa
New razor and battery toothbrush

Haven't got them yet but want to find those gloves you can still work a phone/iPod screen while wearing.

We've always done the stocking opening on Christmas night to stretch the gifts out over the day. I think it's funny that they still carefully open them out and show their dad and I everything that was inside, like we don't know Smile

FoofFighter · 08/12/2016 18:58

dd(3) will be getting a jelly xmassy lollipop, a torch with filters that projects pictures of Cinderella and the other pincesses, a new cup, stickers, yellow nail varnish (she's been coveting some for months and finally tracked some down!), crayons and a wee colouring book - from this thread am taking the idea of some juice and a cereal bar too so that's breakfast sorted out!

Megainstant · 08/12/2016 19:01

Dds 10,14,17
Mugs with hot chocolate /Nutella
Candle with their initial
Star shaped fairy lights
A book
Tote bag with funny writing on
Older dds have lip balms, nail varnishes
Small dd has bouncy ball, nerrf howler

Sara107 · 08/12/2016 19:25

Like Hillbilly we don't have lots of people giving dD (7) presents so she gets a good bit from Santa. I always had a stocking on my bed, but my own child is a bit sensitive and was terrier of Santa. So her presents turn up in the sitting room (as he comes down the chimney that is quite handy anyway!). This year she will get some things she needs anyway like PJs and wellies, then some chocolate, an orange, pens (I got a pack of 60 gel pens in Hobbycraft for £5), a book, a knitted hedgehog thing (felt guilty buying nothing at charity sale). Also some Sylvanian family bits and pieces, so tiny but pricey! I've spent about £35 on the extended hamster family.... Its nice to have lots of things individually wrapped because most of the fun is opening them.

Wait4nothing · 08/12/2016 19:31

I've done 2.5 this year - my dd 7 months, my dm and 0.5 my dh (my mum buys some stuff for him as she gets it for my ddad and dbro)

Dd
Disney Xmas bibs
Small white Choc
Soft book
Soft toy lion

Dh
Chocolate
Tuc crackers (different flavours)
Razor blades
Smellies

Dm
Handbag organiser, Reading Glasses, Xmas pud Bin bags, Candle, Diary,Turkish delight

SandyFeet177 · 09/12/2016 00:53

In my family, whatever is in the stocking is from Santa, the great presents wrapped under the tree are from mom and dad. The presents in the stockings are never wrapped either. My are nearly all grown up, never had any complaints. Small presents, some chocolate, one year a bell of the reindeer's thingy.

ButterfliesRfree · 09/12/2016 04:30

Sweets
Headphones
Soap
Biscuits that they like
Christmas socks
Face masks for older kids
Colouring pens
Play dough. For some reason the older ones love molding with it still
Lip balm
Magazine
Trading cards for the one who likes this
Hair things etc etc. Something along those lines
It's just a bunch of fun stuff to muck around with and eat Christmas Day here.
