To ask what are you putting in your DC Christmas stockings?

Just interested in this Christmas stocking tradition in UK. I'm not British so we didn't do anything similar as a child. But now I have a DS3 and I think he'd love it. I'd love to hear what kind of things you are planning to put in your DCs Christmas stockings. Just sweets, little toys or something bigger? Would the child normally open it on Christmas morning?

Dd's don't have huge stocking and also non stretchy material so can only fit a few things depending on the size of the gifts.

Dd1 (4):
Disney princess cutlery set
peppa pig bubble bath
My little pony underpants
Terry's chocolate orange

Dd2 (18mo):
Cutlery set
Terry's chocolate orange

The chocolate oranges will last them both ages. I'm stuck on what else to put in there for dd2, but I guess it doesn't matter too much at her age as she won't really understand either way?? I might twitch and think of something closer to the time.

Crabbitstick · 07/12/2016 21:47

For DS 3

Rugby ball (small)
Bath crayons
Figure of a whale
Chocolate coins
Straws
Chocolate Orange
Custard
Shortbread (last 2 his request)

megletthesecond · 07/12/2016 21:51

I can't remember everything, don't think I've finished this year.

Lush playdoh solid bubble bath.
Block of air dying clay.
Xmas pants.
New slipper socks.
Nutella jar with their own name label. I do hope dd doesn't eat it all.

Will add;
shower gel
Small toy.
Xmas book

beckslovestimmy · 07/12/2016 21:52

Leatherboundanddown · 07/12/2016 22:00

I have gone a bit obsessive with dd 5's stocking this year so not sure if it is all going to even fit in. I have got loads of stuff from both tiger and wilko this year, really good and cheap.

We have:

Satsuma and choc reindeer
Mini box of coco pops
Those straws you drink milk through to turn to milkshake
Ruler with name on
Tiny box with mini stapler/punch/pins etc only £1 from wilko!
Mini highlighters
Trolls pencil
Notebook
Kitty lipbalm
Magic flannel
2 x mini sewing craft set
Mini beanie baby teddy tree dec
Socks
Hairclips
Mini nailclipper and file in pouch set
Paper aeroplane
Blind bags lego and trolls
Shopkins
Stickers
Mini stamp set
Bracelet
Glowsticks

If this does not buy me at least 30 min in bed I will be most upset. Only joking, I love this stocking, been buying stuff for it all year.

MistressMolecules · 07/12/2016 22:03

Dd1 (14)

Chocolate coins
Chocolate dog (dog from the Snowman)
Chocolate pooping reindeer (DHs idea but she will find it hilarious)
Selfie stick
Book
Nail varnish
And a jokey present (it's a wig from £ shop but it is a joke between us so will make her giggle)

Dd2 (2 just after Christmas)

Bath crayons
Chocolate coins
Chocolate dog
Mini wooden books
Light up ball
I've forgotten what else I have got her Confused as the stocking presents are already wrapped (I wrap each gift individually, rather than just put them in the stocking unwrapped)

itsawonderfulworld · 07/12/2016 22:08

Wow! I'm not from the UK originally either, and DH is Irish. We do a mix of traditions which we all love. We exchange presents on Christmas Eve, opening everything from Grandparents etc plus our presents for each other - usually something the children have asked for but not their main presents, plus smaller gifts that they give each other and whatever they have for us. Then their main presents are delivered by Santa, into pillowcases - we don't do stockings and reading this thread I'm very glad we don't! This year their "stockings" will include an iPod for one DC, a helmet cam for another, plus a few electronic games, books etc. Their presents from us include event tickets and a magazine subscription, plus new pjs, dressing gowns and slippers. They get plenty of sweets etc during the holidays so dont miss out.

If I'd grown up with a stocking I'd probably want to do them too, but I'm very glad not to have to source what seems like a lot of tat that they wouldn't enjoy that much! (Personally I can't abide "smellies" and anything like that would just be regifted).

megletthesecond · 07/12/2016 22:42

leather my then 9yr old DS was thrilled when he got his own nail clippers in his stocking last year. And mine don't go walkabouts anymore.

confusedofengland · 07/12/2016 22:46

Mine have a mixture of toys, books, some bubble bath, a new onesie & chocolates. The toys & books are all secondhand & have cost me roughly £20 per DC, the other bits are new & add another £10 or so to each total. So roughly £100 for all 3 stockings.

They each have a main present of a Kindle Fire & are lucky enough to have lots of generous relatives.

We could have spent more but I don't feel that it's necessary nor is it something I want to do for my DC.

confusedofengland · 07/12/2016 22:54

Forgot to add that the DC open them first thing, downstairs in the lounge all together (after they've checked to see if Santa's food & drink has gone). They are 8 (next week, anyway), 5 & 2.

MsHybridFanGirl · 07/12/2016 23:12

My best Xmas memory is waking up on Xmas morning and stretching out my feet to feel the rustling of paper and the heaviness of the stocking and to know that Santa had been!
It is literally the best memory of Xmas and I still remember the excited, warm, fuzzing feeling each Xmas morning!

I always opened my stocking on mum's bed and DD does the same. Hers this year:

David Walliams book
Emoji socks
Xmas novelty socks
Lip glosses
Haribo cracker
Dairy free selection box
Mini perfume

Can remember what else Confused the stocking is just little fun gifts. Main presents under the tree, any time after 6am Xmas Wink

Haudyerwheesht · 07/12/2016 23:23

itsawonderfulworld did you mean to be so rude?

missymayhemsmum · 07/12/2016 23:31

Chocolate coins, a sugar mouse, tangerine, a book or two, colouring pens and drawing pad, a few small (quiet) toys, gloves and woolly hat, pretty hair slides.
Everything wrapped in different paper from what's under the tree, naturally.

HicDraconis · 07/12/2016 23:32

Two boys 9 & 10.

Both stockings are similar - they have a $2 coin, small orange, bag of chocolate coins in the toe area, then a couple of books, 2 packs of pokemon cards, small toy to put together and play with (from Tiger so cheap and cheerful, will keep them entertained for a while on Christmas day but doesn't have to last!), small lego set, mug with space for cookies, T shirts, more chocolate, some form of activity - DS2 is having a pokemon annual, DS1 will get some sort of craft kit.

Something you want
Something you need
Something to wear
Something to read

:-)

formerbabe · 08/12/2016 09:09

If I'd grown up with a stocking I'd probably want to do them too, but I'm very glad not to have to source what seems like a lot of tat that they wouldn't enjoy that much!

Waking up to my Christmas stocking is my best childhood memory! Now I have dc, I hear them waking up on Christmas morning and hear them screaming with delight that Santa has visited! It's their best bit of Christmas. I'm conscious of the 'tat' so I try to buy stuff I know theyll use or need like socks, hairbands, stationery, books etc.

Mooey89 · 08/12/2016 09:12

DS 3 is getting: a dinosaur microwave hottie, choc coins, paw patrol socks. Paw patrol toothbrush/toothpaste, pants. Stickers, crayons. Plastic dinosaur toy. Book.

Gets left empty at end of bed and filled up ready for the morning.

monkeymamma · 08/12/2016 09:20

This is a struggle for me! I loved getting a stocking and have made lovely ones for my dc but I never know what to put in. They are 4 and 2. Sweets they get too much of already. Little toys - they have so many cars and ds1 wouldn't play with them although ds2 might. I've got them each a couple of books (chapter books for ds1 and peppa mini library ds2). Oranges they will make a lovely mess with over the dgp's guest sheetsConfused. Stickers maybe. We've been to 20,000 birthday parties over the last fortnight and have lots of those little novelty type toys in the house now. Pants they KNOW come from mummy so that would blow the whole Santa thing out the water!

monkeymamma · 08/12/2016 09:23

Maybe I need to lighten up and get them some of those wierd disco want things from Tesco.

I just literally HATE clutter and excess though!

Ds1 only wants one present and had been asking for it since summer (currently in cupboard waiting to be wrapped). Boy after my own heart!

beggingbehind · 08/12/2016 09:51

We are quite traditional i would say i have 5 DC ranging from 7-16. (4 DS 1DD)
They all get every year:
A sacsuma (I know!)
An anual
A lindt bunny (there a favorite and as there quite expensive they get one a year!)
Chocolate coins
2 small gifts (from a small toy train, yo-yo, marbles ect)
2 craft items (colouring pencils, small art set, keychain maker)
1 medium pratical present (often headphones, a watch, soap collection, desk accessory, t-shirt ect.)
Book

This how stockings where given when i was young and DH (although we got slightly less!) and we like it to be pratical but nicce for them to open

beggingbehind · 08/12/2016 09:54

Hic, you sort of reminded me. We give DC 5 pounds a week befor christmas a make a collaborative stocking between them to give to the local refugee for the children there for christmas, i sort of now what its like and having something to open on christmas we hoped would make it a bit nicer.

SpringerS · 08/12/2016 10:17

I'm Irish so have no history of stockings (apart from pre-filled stockings gifted by relatives) though I do remember quite wanting one when I was a child. So when DS was 2 I put all his small gifts into one of the decorative stockings I hang on the mantlepiece. He'd gotten an easel that year, so all the paints/chalks/crayons/etc went into it, along with mandarin oranges. I don't wrap Santa gifts so the excitement is insane when he walks into the livingroom and sees everything laid out, ready to play with. The stocking then acts as something that calms him down a little as he looks through it, making him more able to process and play with his toys.

I've stuck with just filling it with small toys that he'd be getting anyway rather than special stocking filler type toys. This year he's 4 and it's the first year he knows to expect a stocking. I've bought him his own special stocking that will go in his Christmas eve box and he can hang it before bed on Christmas eve. In it he'll get Rescue Bots, Paw Patrol figures, superhero books and teddies, mandarins and maybe a chocolate Santa.

ineedbanoffee · 08/12/2016 11:18

We always had big stockings even though we had no money when I was little. This year my girls, 3 and 5, will have sacks from Santa that will have all their presents in from Santa (all the presents under the tree are from aunties/uncles/grannies - not us, so everything from us is actually from Santa) -

V cheap digital camera and case (£25 total)
Bolt on DVD (£3)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book (£4)
Christmas sticker book (£2)
Reindeer soft toy (£5)
Space torch (£5)
Frozen sticky mosaics (£1.25)
A chocolate santa, small selection box, and an orange (total £3)

Three-year-old:

Fur Real Cat (£30)
Paw Patrol Puzzles (£4)

Pocahontas DVD (£7)
Penguin soft toy (£5)

Frozen sticky mosaics (£1.25)

Chocolates and orange (total £3)
