OCD cleaning?

HardLightHologram · 07/12/2016 10:05

I've just seen an advert for a company on Facebook.

The company is called Oven Cleaning Direct and its logo is just 'OCD'.

It's not just me that finds this seriously offensive, is it?

It looks like it's a franchise so it's not even a person with OCD advertising (which is the only okayish reason I could think of).

I'm tempted to comment on the ad but I'm not sure if I'm being too sensitive.

It's a pun.

Manumission · 07/12/2016 10:10

It's a bit off, yes.

MauiPooTroll · 07/12/2016 10:12

YANBU. I think it's offensive too. No one makes these jokes about physical health problems.

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2016 10:15

I think it's quite a clever pun.

Yes, it's a bit off but I couldn't get 'seriously offended' by it.

Each to their own though.

PurpleDaisies · 07/12/2016 10:18

I don't like it-my friend has had her life ruined by OCD and I hate it when people say they're "a little bit OCD".

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 07/12/2016 10:18

OCD is horribly misunderstood. If people knew what it was to try and manage intrusive and dreadful thoughts through cleaning and other repetitive tasks they would be less inclined to find it amusing.

littlesallyracket · 07/12/2016 10:19

It's a pun.

Just because it's a pun, that doesn't mean it's fine.

I have OCD. Sadly it's never made me want to clean my oven though, just plagued me with terrifying and distressing images of grotesque things happening to my loved ones and completely overwhelmed me with crippling anxiety, which is obviously hilarious and - oh wait, no, it's really fucking not.

If it's a mistake, it's unfortunate. If it's deliberate, it's really twattish.

I've seen an OCD cleaning on FB as well (wonder if it's the same one), and I didn't think it was appropriate, and sent them a message saying so. It's minimising the condition to an urge to have a super clean house.

SortAllTheThings · 07/12/2016 10:25

Oh, I missed the bit about oven cleaning. Hmm, in that case it's an acronym of the actual company name, so I don't think it's that bad.

The one I was talking about had a cartoon image of a woman frantically cleaning, and it was called "OCD cleaning". THAT was out of order.

PurpleDaisies · 07/12/2016 10:30

Oh, I missed the bit about oven cleaning. Hmm, in that case it's an acronym of the actual company name, so I don't think it's that bad.

Do you think it's a total coincidence that the cleaning company's name spells out OCD? Hmm

Notso · 07/12/2016 10:34

I wouldn't have made the connection.

Rachel0Greep · 07/12/2016 10:35

I hate it when people say they're "a little bit OCD".

Same here.

And in answer to the OP, no, I wouldn't like to see what must be a very difficult condition to live with, mocked by a company in that way.

Katy07 · 07/12/2016 10:40

It doesn't bother me to be honest and I also have the hideous thoughts & it stops me going out and having a normal life. So it's a bit tasteless, but in the grand scheme of things? Life's just too short to be offended by everything.

WorraLiberty · 07/12/2016 10:42

If you look at their vans on Google, they have 'OCD' on the side and 'Oven Cleaning Direct', written right underneath it.

MidsummersNight · 07/12/2016 10:58

It's an acronym, it's** your choice to be offended by it.

Be offended on here, but don't embarrass yourself by commenting on their page/photo.

It might be a weird coincidence, but "Oven Cleaning Direct" isn't a choice name for an oven cleaning company, it's perfectly reasonable.

splendidglenda · 07/12/2016 11:12

Seriously ignorant. And very offensive actually

splendidglenda · 07/12/2016 11:13

No yanbu

SortAllTheThings · 07/12/2016 11:15

"Do you think it's a total coincidence that the cleaning company's name spells out OCD? hmm
Bookm"

Don't Hmm at me. No, I don't think it's a total coincidence, but it's a reasonable company name. My point was that it's a bit different to actually calling your company "OCD cleaners".

PurpleDaisies · 07/12/2016 11:21

Who made you the thread police SortAllTheThings? Hmm

Their logo is OCD. I just don't believe a cleaning company would accidentally use that on their vans and literature. I don't actually think it's that different to calling themselves "OCD cleaners".

SortAllTheThings · 07/12/2016 11:32

Erm.. OK then, I wasn't policing the thread. Not sure why you've taken issue with me, I was just making a point like everybody else.

Ease off with the Hmm things, and chill out maybe?

I can see the molehill, but it really is being turned into the Andes.
Overthinking and getting your feathers ruffled is no good for your wellbeing.

'Direct' is quite popular in company names though. I've heard of a Direct Oven Cleaning.

Sallystyle · 07/12/2016 12:04

YANBU

But OCD has plagued my life for years and now my son.

It has had me suicidal at times. It's an awful illness. One that is hard to be taken seriously, partly due to people saying shit like 'I'm a bit OCD about cleaning'

littlesallyracket · 07/12/2016 12:06

I wouldn't say I was 'offended' as such - I just think it's ignorant and unfunny, which I don't think is the same thing as being offended by it, if you see what I mean. I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to comment on it, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
