Fucking tinsel

I am quite ready to be told IABU!

DP and I have put up the xmas tree. Its great, nice size, red and gold with a few vintage style baubles along with some other nice red ones.

Now the problem.....I hate tinsel with a passion and we had some inherited hideous red with gold holly tinsel that is quite threadbare in places.

For some reason DP thinks it looks lovely and has put it on the tree. It looks awful. I gently suggested we put the gold beads on instead and used the tinsel round the mirror but no he won't hear anything against the fucking horrible stuff!

Just so I'm not drip feeding it wasn't from his family so no sentimental feelings towards it he just has really bad taste.

I will be having family over and I am really embarrassed by it as I cannot describe how hideous it is!

Wibu to wait till he is asleep, take it off, put the beads on and ignore the fallout or do I just suck it up and try not to look at it (it's in my living room so will spend a lot of time with it)

* I know first world problems and it is slightly tongue in cheek.

I don't like tinsel at all. My 4yo does so I had to concede and buy some this year. It's not on the tree though.

Catsize · 05/12/2016 22:20

I quite like it OP.

There is something missing though - paper chains made from that stuff called 'sugar paper' that had bugger all to do with sugar

NotAMamaYet · 05/12/2016 22:20

I normally HATE tinsel and vetoed it... however ours is up, and no I feel like it needs it!?!? (Opinions?! Not hijacking your thread OP!)

FYI - the tinsel on yours deffo goes, sorry MrFoxy

Fucking tinsel
SleepyRoo · 05/12/2016 22:22

Just take it off. When he notices, explain it was really bothering you. Make it into a silly irritation that you're half embarrassed about. Then quickly change the subject / segue into "and here's a drink/nice plate of food/ clip of Ed Balls doing Gangnam". End.

pennycarbonara · 05/12/2016 22:23

YANBU. I had no idea there were so many fellow tinsel-haters. Weirdly I don't mind tinsel that has fine loops and is kind of fluffy; but other kinds, and especially normal plain tinsel made of linear strands (that usually shed) I really don't like. All of that type looks a bit depressing to me, threadbare or not.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 22:23

Your trees look lovely! You have nice thick tinsel I wouldn't mind so much if my tinsel looked like that.

So I have taken the tinsel off Shock I have put our elf under the tree with the tinsel trailing from the bottom of the tree into a pile around the elf so it looks like he has pulled it off Grin

I think this is MUCH better!

Fucking tinsel

Would DP notice if you replaced the admittedly tragic tinsel with some less threadbare tinsel?
YANBU.
AH! have just seen last picture-100% better. tree looks divine.
Clever solution.
If all else fails blame the elf Xmas Wink

Christmassnake · 05/12/2016 22:33

Yep,fit for the bin..nice tree apart from that

BellMcEnd · 05/12/2016 22:38

There is no such thing as too much tinsel. Love the stuff.

Will no one think of the tinsel??

AngryGinger · 05/12/2016 22:39

Looks fine to me, I can't believe you are embarrassed.. no one will even notice

It starts of like this....

Then you compromise. Which is why I have three full sized trees in the house. Xmas Blush

Biffsboys · 05/12/2016 23:13

No tinsel allowed in this house Blush

MissVictoria · 05/12/2016 23:18

My mum used to set a night to do our tree, from the time me and my sister got to our teens she admitted she hated every childhood christmas tree we ever helped decorate, and from then on she insisted on doing the tree by herself, along with round the mirror decorations and lights in the window. We weren't even allowed to put one ornament on, she'd just move it :P We haven't had a single christmas decoration, let alone a tree, since she died, it just wouldn't feel right.

Jellybean83 · 05/12/2016 23:25

DP was moaning about the lack of tinsel on our tree, after much sniping we compromised on a bit around a picture on the wall. I hate it.

I might just borrow your idea OP.... those elves can be mischievous little fuckers! 🤔

LadyPeterWimsey · 05/12/2016 23:32

I've told my family they can have tinsel on the tree when I am dead. It helps them contemplate my passing with equanimity with the occasional desire to hire a hitman.

TheySayIamparanoid · 05/12/2016 23:47

Looks a bit bare without tinsel!

previously1474907171 · 05/12/2016 23:51

Keep the tinsel but push it further towards the centre of the tree every day so that it doesn't show, he won't notice.

IAmNotACat · 05/12/2016 23:52

Would he notice if you took the tinsel off?

DavidGTI · 06/12/2016 00:03

I would keep the tinsel on the tree as yes your perspective is that its not to your taste, however some of your guests may like it which may help you feel better about the tree. On the other hand you could say your dp offered ....... (insert an appropriate idea) in return for you letting him decorate the tree.

HemanOrSheRa · 06/12/2016 00:08

I'm with Horrace on this. Tinsel gets put on before all decorations and tucked into the tree. Although possibly after lights, depending on how long it has taken DP to put the tree up and get the lights on. It gets a bit fraught here at this point Grin.

RedBullBlood · 06/12/2016 00:11

I love seeing pictures of other people's Christmas trees, thanks for posting them!
Mine's not up yet, but will be tinsel free.

It's funny word, tinsel, isn't it. Tinsel. Tinsel.

halcyondays · 06/12/2016 09:51

I do like tinsel, but have to admit that one has seen better days. Tinsel should be luxuriant.

Redpony1 · 06/12/2016 10:09

I cannot stand tinsel on trees, i am glad you have taken it off! Naughty Elf...

NotAMamaYet your tree is lovely!! No tinsel needed Grin
