Fucking tinsel

I am quite ready to be told IABU!

DP and I have put up the xmas tree. Its great, nice size, red and gold with a few vintage style baubles along with some other nice red ones.

Now the problem.....I hate tinsel with a passion and we had some inherited hideous red with gold holly tinsel that is quite threadbare in places.

For some reason DP thinks it looks lovely and has put it on the tree. It looks awful. I gently suggested we put the gold beads on instead and used the tinsel round the mirror but no he won't hear anything against the fucking horrible stuff!

Just so I'm not drip feeding it wasn't from his family so no sentimental feelings towards it he just has really bad taste.

I will be having family over and I am really embarrassed by it as I cannot describe how hideous it is!

Wibu to wait till he is asleep, take it off, put the beads on and ignore the fallout or do I just suck it up and try not to look at it (it's in my living room so will spend a lot of time with it)

* I know first world problems and it is slightly tongue in cheek.

I'll get the pic on soon. My computer dont like my phone.

melodycool · 05/12/2016 22:00

Start cutting small sections off of its length so it gradually, almost unnoticeably, gets shorter.

winterisnigh · 05/12/2016 22:01

However after a year of being turned by the no tinsel fashion its back here. With vengeance. Love the stuff, the smell the sparkle....

grumpysquash3 · 05/12/2016 22:02

The tinsel is bad.
I would snip it with scissors when he isn't there, then claim it's 'falling apart/falling off' and bin it.

WalkerBait · 05/12/2016 22:03

I have tinsel but big tinsel and it's in order Grin

Fucking tinsel
grumpysquash3 · 05/12/2016 22:03

Just spotted melody has the right idea :)

ThatWasThat · 05/12/2016 22:03

Your tree looks great, inspiring a warm and family atmosphere. Ignore the anti-tinsellites and embrace the tinsel!

Motherwithflaws · 05/12/2016 22:05

Tinsel is the work of the devil. I'd accidentally hoover the tinsel then deny any knowledge!

TroysMammy · 05/12/2016 22:06

YANBU. I hate tinsel, the feel of and look of it gives me the creeps. Green tinsel I can accept and look at in small doses but red, blue, silver and gold yuck yuck yuck.

Squiff85 · 05/12/2016 22:07

Not used it for years!

glitterandtinsel · 05/12/2016 22:08

As you can tell from my name I love tinsel. But that is really threadbare. In my opinion there isn't enough tinsel, glitter, feathers or baubles on my tree. Loads of different colours too. I've never seen tinsel like yours before. YANBU. If he really wants it he needs to get some new tinsel.

winterisnigh · 05/12/2016 22:08

My post was meant to be lighthearted, in accordance with the instructions of the OP

Thora I took it to be light hearted although liked the advice at the same time and think it will work when two people love each other

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/12/2016 22:10

Here it is....My purple and blue disaster.

Fucking tinsel
Ssenunni · 05/12/2016 22:10

Walker your tree is gorgeous! I haven't used tinsel in years but yours is as luxuriant as a foxes tail. Love it.

LowDudgeon · 05/12/2016 22:11

Aldi have some lovely thick shiny tinsel in atm!

I love tinsel. I do agree that yours is a bit unlovable though, OP. Poor old tinsel

Marcipex · 05/12/2016 22:11

Yy to melody.

misson · 05/12/2016 22:11

Love tinsel. Can't bear the naffness of little beads on string. Then again I love coloured lights. Home and Garden would hate my tree.

It's not the best tinsel I have ever seen though.

Have you asked the tree what it thinks?

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/12/2016 22:13

It's perfectly fine.

Totally.

Leave it alone!

Lynnm63 · 05/12/2016 22:14

I like tinsel and gold beads on the same tree. I haven't put our tree up yet but always do it whilst the kids are at school. I don't want your 'help' thank you. They do have their own tree in the kitchen and they can put what they like on that.

Namechangenurseryconcerns · 05/12/2016 22:14

Dh and I are the opposite. I love tinsel-the way it reflects the lights is one of my favourite things at Chritsmas. DH sighs every year when I get it out but always admits it looks nice in the end!
Personally I think strings of beads look far tackier and I'm not fond of the wrapped up in ribbon look. But each to their own!

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 05/12/2016 22:15

And then accidentally donate it to a charity shop in the New Year?

What is a charity shop going to want with threadbare tinsel, in January? Quality stuff in November maybe, but shit in January?

Fieryfighter · 05/12/2016 22:15

Burning is the only option. I fucking hate tinsel but mangey old tinsel even more so!

winterisnigh · 05/12/2016 22:15

Op because he loves it so much can you buy him some new thick tinsel - for christmas Grin then bin the old stuff - then - if he complains you have him in a vice - because how could he not love the tinsel you gave him
