Fucking tinsel

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:05

I am quite ready to be told IABU!

DP and I have put up the xmas tree. Its great, nice size, red and gold with a few vintage style baubles along with some other nice red ones.

Now the problem.....I hate tinsel with a passion and we had some inherited hideous red with gold holly tinsel that is quite threadbare in places.

For some reason DP thinks it looks lovely and has put it on the tree. It looks awful. I gently suggested we put the gold beads on instead and used the tinsel round the mirror but no he won't hear anything against the fucking horrible stuff!

Just so I'm not drip feeding it wasn't from his family so no sentimental feelings towards it he just has really bad taste.

I will be having family over and I am really embarrassed by it as I cannot describe how hideous it is!

Wibu to wait till he is asleep, take it off, put the beads on and ignore the fallout or do I just suck it up and try not to look at it (it's in my living room so will spend a lot of time with it)

* I know first world problems and it is slightly tongue in cheek.

Is it just me or does it look really thin? Our gold tinsel is gorgeous but is much more full and fluffy.

YANBU after I've seen that

CharleyDavidson · 05/12/2016 21:39

Not too bad.

I like tinsel because it catches the lights and reflects them.
I also dislike tinsel because it can look scruffy.

I usually mean to not have any, then end up with it on the tree anyway.

McCunty · 05/12/2016 21:40

I agree with you op, it's thin, I don't like it!

Isawahatonce · 05/12/2016 21:40

YABU. It wouldn't be christmas without tinsel. I won't hear otherwise. I love tinsel so much it's probably a bit weird, it just adds that sparkle that makes everything feel special and cozy and christmassy and wonderful. Aside from that, if i was your DH and I wanted something on the tree, and you refused, I'd be quite upset. It's his tree too and he likes tinsel so why shouldn't he have it? It's just a bit of tinsel - doesn't the tree look a bit bare without it? I may be being biased due to my irrational love of tinsel but I would be really upset if someone refused to let me have it. I just really love tinsel.

Palomb · 05/12/2016 21:41

I live tinsel but that is BAD TINSEL!! Omg 😳

ThePinkOcelot · 05/12/2016 21:41

Dd put our tree up on Saturday when I was out. Whilst I do like a bit of tinsel, I don't like a total overload which is what I have now. I'm having to sit on my hands and button my lip. I feel your pain.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:42

Honestly the picture makes it actually look better than it is Confused

It doesn't help that he has added some random ornaments on it but really that is the least of my problems right now Wink

Burn it, now!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 05/12/2016 21:43

Love tinsel, has to be decent quality stuff though.

The problem is your tinsel is shit quality, not that there is tinsel.

You need some big, bushy sparkly streams of tinsel in a few different colours. Your tree will be perfect thenGrin

OohMavis · 05/12/2016 21:44

As tinsel goes, it's not bad really.

DappledThings · 05/12/2016 21:44

Someone I know just put a photo of their tree on Facebook and there were comments about no tinsel. I swear until that I had no idea people didn't put tinsel on. No tinsel looks so unfinished!

lalaloopyhead · 05/12/2016 21:45

Its a bit threadbare but it doesn't look too bad. I love a bit of tinsel though, reminds me of being a kid.

baconandeggies · 05/12/2016 21:46

YANBU. Any tinsel on a tree is all kinds of wrong imo.

RedMapleLeaf · 05/12/2016 21:46

The smell of tinsel is the smell of Christmas.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:46

God I don't know what to do, do I just burn the whole tree and start again or would that be over kill slightly.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:48

In theory I don't have anything against tinsel really it's just this threadbare, hideously ugly stuff.

If you want a crap tree, I can show you my half arsed attempt.

Foxysoxy01 · 05/12/2016 21:51

Yes please do!

Marcipex · 05/12/2016 21:52

Yes your tinsel has Sublimpum Mankosa and must be destroyed by incineration. Hth.

TheNoodlesIncident · 05/12/2016 21:55

The word Tinsel is now starting to look German for some reason.

I like it, reminds me of childhood Christmases, but your example is a bit past its best OP.

elodie2000 · 05/12/2016 21:55

If you want a crap tree, I can show you my half arsed attempt.
Ditto.
Your tree looks beautiful compared to the pathetic thing I decorated at the weekend. The tinsel is probably the nicest thing about mine Xmas Blush

elfonshelf · 05/12/2016 21:56

YANBU - I have banned tinsel (except for angel halos in nativity plays) and have beads instead... that nixed those who said it 'doesn't look held together without tinsel'.

Given I have to be the one to do battle with the sodding fairy lights every year, it seems fair that I can regard the tree as my own little dictatorship.

Also, I like to see that there's a tree somewhere under all the xmas tat...

thecatsarecrazy · 05/12/2016 21:58

At least he takes an interest. My dh gets the hump because I ask him to get the boxes out the attic and I get no help putting them up.

Twinchaos1 · 05/12/2016 21:59

That is bad tinsel. I can't abide tinsel on trees, DH thinks this is odd but lets it go. DD this very evening was trying put tinsel on the tree and I trying to say no firmly but in a non judgemental way, so that she didn't repeat anything too Judgey at school. I may just have to admit to her I am a tinsel snob.

winterisnigh · 05/12/2016 21:59

Op I am so glad I have full artistic control of our tree. I would struggle with my creation being marred by something I didn't feel fit in.

I wasn't aware so many men took an interest tbh.
Last year I would have vomited at that tinsel but this year I have taken a turn. I think its looks, nice Shock the colour of it, Over on the xmas tree thread a few trees with lots of colours have attracted my eye...
