Sick of all these foriners taking our jobs! England would be a much better team without them! Oh, wait....Confused

OP posts:
Sybys · 04/12/2016 23:05

Worra -Players have always been able to qualify for the England team through English parents or grandparents, or through residency in England and naturalisation as British citizens.

The latter part is false. No-one has played for England through naturalization as a British citizen. This is due to the special status of the home nations - i.e. we are allowed to compete separately, despite sharing a common passport. In theory ,someone could never live in England, but quality to play for them by virtue of having lived in Scotland for 5 years and become a British citizen. There is an agreement, between the home nations, not to use naturalized players to stop this situation arising.

It is true in other countries, just not England/Wales/Scotland/NI.

BadKnee · 04/12/2016 23:06

Really OP , is that the limit of your political understanding Really?

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2016 23:08

I didn't do a Hmm face to anyone amispartacus?

Are you the OP btw?

I'm confused now.

If you have English grandparents (for example) yes it makes you 'English enough' to play for the team, but that's not what the OP is saying, is it?

She/he is saying that English players are shit.

If you were born in Jamaica for example, that makes you Jamaican no matter where your grandparents were born.

So it's the English team who are shit, not the 'English' players just because they're apparently English.

MetallicBeige · 04/12/2016 23:17

Is OP saying, footballs fans as a homegenous mass will have voted for Brexit? Cos football fans, they're all racist and thick innit.
Now she supposes they're crying into their pie and bovril that the furrin players won't be allowed to play any more.

Bollocks.

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2016 23:18

Sybys the way I understand it is anyone over the age of 18 who has lived in England for 5 or more years, can play as a naturalised citizen.

Unless the rules have changed.

Sybys · 04/12/2016 23:30

Worrall, that's not quite right.

Players who received at least 5 years education in England, before their 18th birthday, can be eligible, but someone who lived in England from say, age 14-19, wouldn't be.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/12/2016 23:31

or through residency in England and naturalisation as British citizens.

Not sure about football, but this is certainly the case for rugby.

ilovesooty · 04/12/2016 23:32

I'm a football fan and I voted remain. I suspect the OP is sleeping it off now anyway.

Sybys · 04/12/2016 23:33

Sorry, Worra

Sorry Sybys I should re-phrase that.

Anyone over 18, living in England for 5 years past their 18th birthday.

As far as I know, this rule hasn't changed.

"World governing body Fifa's rules state that a player is eligible to play for a country if "he has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association".

Taken from this BBC link

Sybys · 05/12/2016 00:29

Worra - yes that if FIFA's rule, but the home nations opted out in favor of the alternative rule in my post.

Sybys · 05/12/2016 00:38

There is a good explanation here - footylaw.co.uk/2013/10/10/who-can-play-for-england/

I'm Welsh, and we really wanted Angel Rangel to be able to play for us. He would have been eligible under FIFA's rule, but due to the home nations having opted out (as they were entitled to do so by virtue of having a common nationality) and imposing the alternative rule instead, he wasn't eligible.

FlissMumsnet · 05/12/2016 09:12

We realise many posts here are heavily sarcastic but when discussing race/nationality, can we remind everyone to chose their words with care.

As you were....

WorraLiberty · 05/12/2016 09:33

Ahh thanks for the explanation Sybys, that makes sense.

amispartacus · 05/12/2016 09:48

worra

Your post as 22:55 had the Hmm face in.

Not sure why you needed to do that - and no, I'm not the OP.

WorraLiberty · 05/12/2016 11:38

No it didn't amispartacus

Look again, it has a Confused confused face.

And was because I was confused...
