We're good at Rugby. Where do you stand on Brexit covering Rugby?

user1471517900 · 04/12/2016 22:38

This thread is utterly amazing! However I do think we should do something. In fact any penalties conceded by big haired Belgians should be discounted for a start in the English game. Swedish goals are still allowed mind you.

She probably doesn't know anything about rugby either. Not that it would stop her posting bollocks I suspect.

ClashCityRocker · 04/12/2016 22:41

sybys yeah that's a good point re the cap - didn't think of that. Didn't they try doing it with non-eu nationals at one point? I seem to recall that most clubs got round it via loans rather than transfers, but I may be misremembering.

And it will certainly cause problems for the lower leagues.

Although, to be frank, on my list of concerns re brexit, the impact on the premier league is something of a low priority.

Sybys · 04/12/2016 22:45

ClashCityRocker I believe Greg Duke announced, pre-brexit, that they would be introducing a cap on non-eu players. I imagine the same could happen for European players now. To speculate, I imagine any cap will be on the number of players a team can register for its 25-man squad, so I don't think loans would circumvent that

Sybys · 04/12/2016 22:46

Greg Dyke.

ClashCityRocker · 04/12/2016 22:46

I have a cunning plan to win the World Cup.

First we need to host it...

Then it's 'sorry, mr messi, no visa for you! nor you, Mr Aguera.' And so on, until all the countries competing are reduced to sending in the local Sunday league under-8s team (or equivalent).

Mind, we'd probably still go out on penalties to Germany.

ClashCityRocker · 04/12/2016 22:47

Thanks sybs I remember hearing something.

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2016 22:50

Right so England is a shit team, due to English players being shit?

You do realise the England squad has always been made up of non English players, right? Confused

And why are you bringing black players into it, like because they're black they're not English? Confused

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 22:53

You do realise the England squad has always been made up of non English players, right

The English squad is supposed to be made of people who are English.

There has been discussion that the dominance of foreign players in the Premier League has an impact on the national squad as talent does not get through.

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 22:54

Right so England is a shit team, due to English players being shit

That's probably true Grin

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2016 22:55

The English squad is supposed to be made of people who are English.

No it's not and it never has been Confused

Sybys · 04/12/2016 22:55

Err, is that a typo Worra? The English team is made up of English players (or perhaps those with English parents or grandparents). It is not made up of non-English players.

And yes, the OP appears to be equating non-white to not-English, which is clearly false. Can't tell if she's drunk, stupid or just a gf.

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 22:56

No it's not and it never has been

What credentials do you need to play for the England squad?

ClashCityRocker · 04/12/2016 22:58

I don't think the players are shit, though.

Not as individuals playing for their club. Harry Kane is a world class player for Tottenham, but a pile of wank for England.

The team isn't great, admittedly, as a team they are, a bit, well, shit.

The majority of the team who won in '66 were, at the time, considered quite poor players - bar two or three.

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 22:58

A discussion on foreign players

Sybys · 04/12/2016 22:58

Worra, which non -English players do you believe to have played for the English national team? The 'grandparent' rule, which is a fairly modern introduction, extended eligibility to those with English grandparents, but that's the limit of eligibility.

user1471517900 · 04/12/2016 22:59

Foreigners stifling English talent is a bit of a red herring I think (not that this seems to be what the OP is getting at). When the Premier league started we had loads of English players, and the national team was worse than it is now (Graham Taylor anyone?).

Maybe this is what the OP is arguing. It's hard to tell...

WorraLiberty · 04/12/2016 22:59

Players have always been able to qualify for the England team through English parents or grandparents, or through residency in England and naturalisation as British citizens.

Exactly the same for the other countries in the world cup/Euro.

FitnessFad · 04/12/2016 22:59
Hmm Maybe stay off the gin Mumofone
PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/12/2016 23:00

OP I didn't vote to leave but quite frankly your posts aren't doing the "we should have remained" camp any favours.

^ this.

OP put the Wine down. Hmm

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 23:02

Players have always been able to qualify for the England team through English parents or grandparents, or through residency in England and naturalisation as British citizens

And that made you do a Hmm face to my comment - yes - if you have English parents or English grandparents, that makes you English - or 'English' enough to play for England.
