People who remove their shoes in an office environment..

AIBU or is this actually now an acceptable thing to do?

I've just gone back in to an office based role, there's a contact centre and i work the other end on a different team.

Many of the women come in, then spend the day walking about with no shoes on..

It seems very unprofessional and a bit grim Envy

I saw a camera flash in my class today - for no reason I could see, one of my students had removed his shoe and taken a picture of his sock.

havingabadhairday · 30/11/2016 19:59

I take shoes off in work. I also have a hot water bottle - but that's because my idea of warm enough is too hot for everyone else. We're a small office and I save them loads of money on IT support and stuff so nobody minds.

worrierandwine · 30/11/2016 20:00

I have always worked in clinical environments so no desire to go shoe less but even if I could I wouldn't. My husband used to work in an office and when I picked him up I used to sit and watch all the staff come out thinking I had never seen a scruffier bunch, I would actively grimace.
People who take their shoes off on dance floors annoy me though. Dangerous for a start but moreover, if you can't walk/ dance in heels then don't wear them!! Dancing around barefoot or stocking feet to me says "I'm a sloppy drunk who doesn't care enough about my outfit or appearance to keep my shoes on".
Totally disagree on the poo front though, if you've got to go, you've got to go. I would never give myself stomach ache holding a poo in. What the hell do you do if you work full time, you're never at home to poo so it has to be at work surely? It's no good for your health anyway holding your bowels or your bladder, they are toxins and need to be got rid of.

Squiff85 · 30/11/2016 20:03

Its just so unnecessary isn't it? I might slip them off for a moment under my desk but wouldn't dream of walking around like it!

newmumwithquestions · 30/11/2016 20:33

But why do people find it so disgusting?

I've walked around in socks many times. I have a shower every morning, wash my feet and put on clean socks. I've never had athletes foot, etc. My feet don't smell.

So in a office - no public / clients etc walking through. No health risks like sharps. Why are clean socks on clean feet so disgusting? My socks would be a lot cleaner than other people's shoes that are worn outside. I don't put them on desks. I don't see why it's disgusting?

luckylavender · 30/11/2016 20:47

I always tell my team that it's a Health & Safety issue in case they stand on something!

falange · 30/11/2016 21:02

I take my shoes off at my desk because my feet are always painful no matter what shoes I wear. I'd love to walk around in bare feet but I know it's not the done thing.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 30/11/2016 21:59

Totally agree re the pita pajama girls. So attention seeking with their blankets round them insisting the heating be turned up. I'd like to see their home energy bills.

And no, it's not ok to walk around in bare feet at work ffs. Can't believe I'm typing that. Mind you, I'm still trying to get over the thread about the doctor with the blue hair.

Wanders off muttering darkly about standards.

spongebob5 · 30/11/2016 22:01

I've worked in 2 different places where colleagues have walked around the office bare footShock I really don't want to see my colleagues feet!

ValaMalDoran · 30/11/2016 22:13

I find it grim and wouldn't do it.

Sugarcrystal2002 · 30/11/2016 22:32

I would occasionally take my shoes off at work and wander round in just my socks, but I walked 30mins to work and quite often my shoes would be soaked by the time I got to work so I had to take them off otherwise they wouldn't be dry by the time I had to make the walk home.

mrsrachie · 30/11/2016 23:51

People are so weirdly precious. I work in a department where we pretty much all take off our shoes (although we do keep socks on). I can understand bare feet giving people the shudders but no idea why it would bother anyone else if I wall around in my socks. You sit at a desk all day, your feet get hot. Perhaps it comes from working in an office environment where we do very long hours, makes the place more relaxed and comfortable.
Bare feet I get, but I think get off the judgy horse when it comes to socks. Maybe even try it. You might be surprised by how much you like it ;)

Elphame · 01/12/2016 00:06

I walked around the office one day with no shoes on. It had just been brought to my attention that I was wearing a blue shoe on one foot and a black one of the other. Totally different styles too but the same heel height.

Yes I had got dressed in the dark.

H1ghw4y61revisited · 01/12/2016 00:11

Sorry...I'm one of those people. Take my shoes off and pad about my office in my socks. I put them on again for meetings etc but I sort of think I think better without my shoes on Blush First thing I do when I get home is take my shoes and socks off too. My feet want to be free Grin

MissVictoria · 01/12/2016 00:15

As long as a person doesn't have anything contagious like a fungus or verruca i don't see the harm in it at all. i HATE wearing shoes, and i can't stand socks either. I'd much rather walk around bare foot, and tbh i find wearing shoes indoors to be a weird concept. I wouldn't sit on my own sofa wearing shoes, its weird keeping shoes on when visiting other peoples houses too. It's a work environment, shoes don't seem necessary imo.

LapsedPacifist · 01/12/2016 00:38

Is this another thread destined to be recycled on the DM next week?
Shoes appear to be optional in many office workplaces. Stinky feet aren't.
Loos are for poos.

foreverandalways · 01/12/2016 01:06

Rougeseas do you work at sse by any chance?

GreatFuckability · 01/12/2016 01:55

dancing barefoot says to me 'im a sloppy drunk who doesn't care enough about my outfit or my appearance to keep my shoes on'

And that's a problem, because....? Imagine having so much fun you DON'T CARE WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE..... fuckin' hedonistic or what?
Confused

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 01/12/2016 02:52

I always dance barefoot. Much less chance of falling off the tables that way!

worldsworstchildren · 01/12/2016 03:28

It's disgusting! Few girls do it in my office and even go into the toilets without them on. Makes me feel ill.

Ameliablue · 01/12/2016 03:43

I put a cardi over my legs at work as my legs get very cold but others would be uncomfortable if I put more heaters on. So surely blankets and got water bottles are considerate as its people managing their own temperature rather than inflicting it on others.

thetoothfairywhoforgot · 01/12/2016 04:18

I've had a few colleagues with dubious habits. One used to loudly break wind whenever he needed to. Another used to pick her nose and eat it at the desk next to me. Another used to tuck the paper under his arm and disappear for a 15 min toilet break every morning.

My current office mate goes barefoot, chases my mouse and stands on my keyboard. But she is only 10 weeks old and a cat so I'll let her off. ;-)

I'm so glad i work from home now!

Woolyheads · 01/12/2016 04:30

The men poo in the women's toilet so as not to stink their own out.

worrierandwine · 01/12/2016 04:55

Greatfuckability I just don't understand why anyone would go to the trouble of selecting an outfit, getting dressed up and then totally ruining it by taking their shoes off. If you know you're going to need to take shoes off just wear some nice flats that you can dance in. I love a good dance but I would sit down a couple of songs and give my feet a rest before a took my shoes off. Back to the original subject, it looks unprofessional to take shoes off at work. are kids allowed to take shoes off at school in the classroom? No. So why should it be acceptable for adults to take shoes off at work?

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 01/12/2016 05:00

My children do 'barefoot learning' in school. Their teachers believe it enhances concentration.
