People who remove their shoes in an office environment..

AIBU or is this actually now an acceptable thing to do?

I've just gone back in to an office based role, there's a contact centre and i work the other end on a different team.

Many of the women come in, then spend the day walking about with no shoes on..

It seems very unprofessional and a bit grim Envy

Only on mumsnet did I find out that some people are unable to use toilets for their intended functions.

Shoes off in office - socially unacceptable - end of.

Thurlow · 29/11/2016 21:56

But what else are they supposed to do? Hold it in for the whole day?!

RougeSeas · 29/11/2016 21:57

Become regular in poo schedule??

That would be a start GrinWink

whensitmyturn · 29/11/2016 21:58

I don't think people who poo at work do it for shits and giggles (see what I did there)

BumDNC · 29/11/2016 21:59

The poo thing is just unreasonable. When you have to go you have to go

5OBalesofHay · 29/11/2016 21:59

If you need to poo you need to poo and you can do it in a toilet which is there for the purpose.

Put shoes on though.

BumDNC · 29/11/2016 22:01

If I am in an office by myself I am not offending a soul with no shoes on!

RougeSeas · 29/11/2016 22:01

Maybe my poo issue is one to conquer at a different time.. We will park the issue Grin

I will continue to hold my breath whilst i wee

The shoe off thing tho... Totally nbu

OK - you might have a point with the shoe thing. But using a toilet to
poo is normal. Or would you rather your colleagues all wore nappies Hmm Confused Shock

NerdsAndMonsters · 29/11/2016 22:03

Curious to how you have trained your bowels so well?

MaudlinNamechange · 29/11/2016 22:03

I can understand needing to change shoes, because none of my badass heels are comfortable either. But padding about without them... some people do this and I don't think it does them any favours.

In every office that I have ever worked, there is always at least one (sometimes a little mini clique) of fairly young women who are prone to getting all pyjama-y in the office. Shoes off, wearing re-purposed strange things as "it's so cold" (i.e. rather than putting on a jumper and a jacket, wrapped in blankets and outdoor coats and things), even hot water bottles sometimes. Often wrapping their hands around mugs, very into making complicated snacks. They tend to have a constant air of sort of droopy weary resilience, and are always exchanging sympathetic smiles, although they are not subject to any particular misfortune other than having to survive life and going to work.

None of them do much and none of them get promoted. I can't understand why they actively adopt a slouchy style that basically announces to the world that they can't be arsed. My apex of work skiving was when I was doing a part time MA at the same time as a full time job and spent as much of work time as possible surreptitiously working on the MA. My modus operandi was to be dressed to the nines, and walk everywhere very fast, and basically pretend to be a Power Woman out of an 80s movie so no one would suspect.

If you are a whirlwind of efficiency AND sometimes take your shoes off then I don't care what you do but if you are one of those pyjama-y people: you're really annoying. Grow up.

RougeSeas · 29/11/2016 22:04

oubil good god no..the smell would be horrific.

I poo only in the morning, after my first cuppa.

NerdsAndMonsters · 29/11/2016 22:05

@ home ? Or work toilet?

WouldHave · 29/11/2016 22:05

So long as the feet aren't smelly, I really can't see what's wrong with it. It's much better for your feet not to be cooped up in shoes all day.

SaltyBitch · 29/11/2016 22:06

I take my shoes off at my desk, but wouldn't walk around.

I am very acutely aware of foot smell though, I'd put them back on if they were pongy.

RougeSeas · 29/11/2016 22:06

maudlin you're my new best friend!! There are actually girls i with HOT WATER BOTTLES!!! Why??!! Just why...

OP posts:
RougeSeas · 29/11/2016 22:07

I walk around barefoot at work and generally during Birkenstock/shoe season. During Autumn, winter and spring, I only wear DM boots.

I have sensory ishoos and hate wearing shoes; I find them really uncomfortable. I love walking from hot tarmac onto cold stone and shiny smooth wooden floors.

No one has ever said anything and I don't really care what anyone thinks. They're my feet.

HearTheThunderRoar · 29/11/2016 22:09

I agree about wearing shoes in the office, a former colleague of mine got told sharply that she needed to wear shoes when walking around office. It is unprofessional imo.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/11/2016 22:10

I have come across children who will only poo at home, and I did wonder how they got to be that way. I wonder no more...

fedupasfudge · 29/11/2016 22:12

I think its a bit rude/unprofessional to walk around shoeless but I suppose its wholly dependent on the office environment

I used to work in an all female office and most of the time you could do what you wanted as long as you were comfy (including hot water bottles for period pain!) However in my most recent job where it was a tiny staff and a bit more formal I would have been mortified.

Just to add; I used to hate people crapping in the work loos until I felt very poorly one day and was forced to do the same myself before heading home. I'm now very sensitive not to judge people for pooing in public!

PhilODox · 29/11/2016 22:13

Is it okay to remove shoes if it's your own office?
