Dh thinks I'm being over the top about not letting Ds1 (6 ) watch Men in Black.
We both remember watching and loving it as children but I've just tried watching the first 10 minutes of it and can't believe I was allowed to watch it! They put it on in school too

So anyway aibu for saying he won't be allowed to watch it?

The bits they don't understand just wash over them.

You mean the bit where the alien kills the farmer and inhabits his dead skin, so the rest of the film is about some sort of decomposing, zombie type entity.
YANBU to be cautious, it is strong stuff for a 6yo. TBH it still gives me the willies.

It's rated PG but within the first 5 minutes someone says "oh shit, oh crap." And then gets called Nick the dick. Lots of use of the word ass too.

I think that is really inappropriate for a children's film.

YABU I wouldn't show it to a 6 year old - mine were 8 and 9 when they saw it though and that was fine.

Even my 12 year old wouldn't watch it - they managed 5 minutes and walked out before the farmer died... they thought it was too scary. (Watching lots of vampire /demon stuff now though, a few years later...)

We started it when DS2 was about 7 but quickly turned it off. He enjoyed it at age 9 though.

Hmm I might give it a couple more years then. I would just hate him to start repeating some of the words in it.

I think it's one of those films where, other than the language, it would be fine for children, but YANBU to not want your 6 year old watching "shit" and "crap". Great film though!

It depends on the child. My DD1 who is nearly 8 wouldn't manage the levels of threat in it. My DD2 who is 5 would be fine. I wouldn't be happy about the language for either of them. But that's why it's PG.

If you open the insight section you can see loads of detail. It's also interesting to note that they say that a PG film ought to be OK for an 8 year old.

We love the Men in Black trilogy. 6 though? No. bit too young. My 9 year old loves it though!

Probably not at six. Not because she'd be scared, she wouldn't, but as you say, there's language in there I'd prefer her not to hear just yet!

I don't think there are many PG films I'd let a 6 year old watch, to be honest, but I'm a dreadful prude about this sort of thing. My 4yo's friends are all into Spiderman and Star Wars and I tut behind their backs.

Depends on the child really. My 5 year old neice isn't allowed to read or watch Gangsta Granny or Lion King/Bambi etc as she doesn't react well to deaths of parent figures.

Hmm, I think its wrong for a school to put it on. My daughter loves scary stuff (she is only 4) and watched frankenweenie the other day and loves monster house, her cousin is the same age and a boy, he cried his eyes out and was terrified at monsterhouse. I think its down to the child so a school probably shouldn't show this film , its parental guidance, meaning the parent knows if the child will be ok with this film, the teachers are not the parent

My brother was obsessed with MIB when he was about that age or maybe a tiny bit older. He would watch it on a daily basis!
