Important paperwork

DP left important paperwork on the footstool for days, I knocked a drink off the side of the sofa while cleaning up today. I say he shouldn't have left very important paperwork somewhere it wasn't safe, he says (although he understand it was an accident) it was my fault. I've said if anything is left out on the sides such as paperwork or letter in the future, it goes in his car or in the bin; DP says this is harsh. Who IBU?

Both of you!!
Leaving important stuff on the footstool wasn't the most sensible move.
Threatening that it will go in the bin unless stored in his car is equally ridiculous.

What about somewhere less vunerable, but a bit more accessible than a car?? We have a small table in the corner of the room (one massive kitchen\dining\luving room here, never again) where we can drop important things - including keys.

Get him a box or basket and put any stuff lying around in there. Its out of your way and he knows where his very important so important he hadn't dealt with or put it safely away is

OP said he needs to put paperwork away or it will go in the car or bin, not that his only option is to put it in the car. He should put his papers away.
