day time tv watching, is lazy and only to be done when sick

NoahVale · 26/11/2016 11:40

is how i was brought up and i cannot get away from that feeling.

i may be lazy and be mumsnetting but to physically go and turn on the TV seems wrong.
I expect I am in the minority, judging by comments

My mother disapproved of ITV as well.

Mine too! BBC only allowed and no day time tv. I actually watched daytime TV yesterday for the first time in years as I was ill. It was rubbish anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2016 16:13

When I am doing housework in the morning I put every telly in the house on so I can go from room to room and keep up with Homes Under the Hammer.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 26/11/2016 16:16

I agree op. Daytime tv was 'common' according to my mother.

I don't even have the radio on.

DH still rolls his eyes when I turn the tv off when we sit down to eat.

Standards my dear.

Ragwort · 26/11/2016 16:17

Agree with Gruasse - of course I know it is totally irrational not to just sit and watch TV in the daytime, but it is so ingrained in me that it is just something I don't feel comfortable with - which I know is totally, totally stupid.

Happy to spend hours on Mumsnet though - I wonder if it is because I use an old fashioned desk top which is situated in our home office so I often doing a bit of work or at least voluntary admin type stuff at the same time so I kid myself I am using my time productively Grin.

Willow2016 · 26/11/2016 16:18

Whats the diffference between sitting on your btm trawling through an internet forum to watching tv?
You are still sitting doing nothing.
I can have the tv on and still get plenty things done, but if I sit down at the pc then I am done for! The time just flies past

My kids dont actually watch a lot of tv, they prefer their consoles (time limited!) BUT I am the adult and what I do during the day when not working is my business not theirs. As long as I still do the housework, washing, shopping and feed them etc who cares? Plus I can catch up with any NCIS that I missed Smile

I tend to watch more tv during the day than at night (well not Jezza!!!) as the good programmes at night are few and far between.

My house my rules. OP's house she can make up her own rules her mother doesnt live there Smile

Remember that daytime TV is mainly aimed at the less productive members of society (I'm not saying "worse" members of society, but the ones who genuinely don't have anything better to do during the day), be they unemployed, disabled, elderly or just plain lazy. It has to be relatively cheap because of the lower viewing figures and consequently the lack of advertiser interest (there's a reason that there are so many adverts for injury claim lawyers, life insurance and so on).

Oh get lost, I can do plenty during the day/evening while still managing to watch some daytime tv. You do know that people work shifts, or may have days off during the week dont you? Lifestyles change over time, thats a pretty ignorant and patronising thing to say in 2016

Is it? Meh, who cares? I love a slovenly day watching the box Smile

maddiemookins16mum · 26/11/2016 16:27

I sit and watch Doctors every day when working at home. I take it as my lunch break.
Apart from that the TV is rarely on until Pointless at tea time.

What's a 'low quality viewer' by the way? I wonder if I am one?Grin

ego147 · 26/11/2016 16:36

You certainly get different adverts during the daytime.

Grausse · 26/11/2016 16:49

Ragwort I use a proper old desk as well. It's probably the least comfortable place to MN. But then I only came on here for a minute........
I bet all you day time TV watchers eat in the street as well Wink.

Isn't that obvious? I can pretend I am working when I am on mumsnet. Grin

I never watch TV in the day or the evening as it bores me, but I do fanny about massively on the internet wasting time so I don't think it's any different.

Willow2016 · 26/11/2016 17:33

allegretto
Smile come to think of it I have used that as an excuse in the evenings to kids

JPinkertonSnoopington · 26/11/2016 17:37

Why assume that disabled people et al don't have anything else to do than watch daytime television? How fucking insulting. I for one prefer a book and some music, or surfing the net to daytime fucking television. I had my fill of television when I was a child and it was on all the time and we had to watch but my mother wanted. . I have bipolar disorder ( and have severe arthritis in my right wrist for which I am having an injection next month and sciatica which makes standing up for any length of time very painful ). I retired early from my day job this year. So I am really on Ms Snobby McSnobbyknickers' shit list, aren't I? Three separate less productive un-brownie points. (Get thee to a television!) This snooty patronising person should remember that disability can be one driving error away. Nobody is immune. Only 17% of disabled people are born with their disability. Points to ponder?

FWIW I don't really like television and haven't got one. I watch what I want on the various catch up apps and enjoy documentaries and cop shows. One of these would be considered "worthy" and the other one not but to me they are all entertainment. Worthy schmurthy– what does it matter? Watch what you like when you like! And what's with the "should" be doing something else? As long as everything gets done by the end of the day, what does it matter?

Having worked full time for 41 years , I think I have been pretty productive and now I can do what I like when I like all day - speech to text enables me to MN and I have broken down the housework into 10 minute slots, and rest for another 20 which makes it all far more manageable. I take a 20 minutes walk every day – any more than that and I am in agony. The doctor said to keep moving but not to push through the pain.

I don't like the phrase " less productive". Define productive. It also seems less far away from such terms as " useless eaters" and " life unworthy of life " than most people realise. Can't happen here? Wanna bet? Disabled people are already been bullied and harassed and called names such as "lazy " and "scroungers" - this is happening to 2 friends of mine who are blind and who both work full-time. It is insidious and demonstrates a worrying trend for society as a whole.

I can't do biscuits, but if I could I'd give you a whole fucking packet of them.

Upanddownroundandround · 26/11/2016 17:43

Well I have managed to get daytime to categories in my head.
This Morning - ok (I might learn something or get a recipe to try)
Loose Women or Doctors - no way.
Grin Ha ha
I also put my judge pants on when people say they have watched films during the day. I have no idea why. Confused

Revealall · 26/11/2016 17:45

JPinkerton - it's not all about you.
The point is a lot of people are at home during the day for any number of reasons. Daytime TV thinks they are a certain demographic even if this isn't the case.

JPinkertonSnoopington · 26/11/2016 18:04

The main point of my post was to highlight the use of the phrase " less productive". The rest was to demonstrate that we are all different, disabled or otherwise, using my own situation as an example. To generalise and to put people in categories can lead to something very dangerous. As for "it is not all about you" I've been patronised by experts so save yourself the bother next time.
.

I see the post has been pulled so it's all a bit academic now anyway.

limitedperiodonly · 26/11/2016 18:56

I also put my judge pants on when people say they have watched films during the day. I have no idea why.

Neither have I. What is the acceptable time to watch films?

Runny · 26/11/2016 19:05

Years ago they used to have some so bad they were good quiz shows in during the day. Win Lose or Draw, Crosswits, Lucky Ladders but my all time favourite has to be Going for Gold with Henry Kelly. I used to watch it all the time when I was skiving off sick from school. The theme tune was hysterically shit.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 26/11/2016 19:07

I love watching films during the day especially when BBC2 have an old black and white on. Last week I saw The Lady Vanishes. Love a bit of Margaret Lockwood.

Crumblevision · 26/11/2016 19:16

A favourite memory of mine is coming home from school (year 7 onwards) and sitting watching the afternoon film with my mum. They were much better years ago than the dross of today 😂
