is how i was brought up and i cannot get away from that feeling.

i may be lazy and be mumsnetting but to physically go and turn on the TV seems wrong.
I expect I am in the minority, judging by comments

"just" not ust.

WorraLiberty · 26/11/2016 14:51

Lazy is lazy.

There's nothing more 'forgivable or worthy' about reading a magazine/newspaper than there is about watching daytime TV, if you should infact be doing something else.

Life is for living. Just enjoy it and do what makes you happy in your spare time.

haveacupoftea · 26/11/2016 14:59

Its 3pm and i'm in bed, on MN, with greatest Harry Potter moments on in the background. DF used to comment out that this was lazy until I told him that I work hard all week, and he needs to allow me to be myself, and myself is NOT into sports, or dragging myself round the shops every weekend.

Obviously when baby comes I'll be up and out of bed but for now i'm enjoying my last few months of being a slob at weekends Smile

ChozzleopsTheThird · 26/11/2016 15:17

I have this issue, I don't feel like I can relax until after 5. It is definitely ingrained, if I'm off during the day I have to do something productive or useful otherwise I feel guilty.

woodhill · 26/11/2016 15:24

I've got more energy during the day whereas it's nice to sit down in the evening when all the chores are done. I would rather listen to music than watch tv if I am doing cooking or housework but if you've got a tv in the kitchen why not watch it.

Penvelopesnightie · 26/11/2016 15:25

Yes definitely, as a child I was not allowed the tv on until after 5pm on a Saturday and Sunday . There was hardly any daytime tv during week when I was a child but at Xmas time I was allowed to watch a film if the weather was bad during the day . Now if I watch daytime tv after breakfast news I feel a bit panicky and I'm listening out for the door in case anyone may suddenly come in and find me watching daytime dross .

ego147 · 26/11/2016 15:32

Remember this TV programme

TheSnowFairy · 26/11/2016 15:34

Saturday mornings DH takes DS1 and DD out.

DD2 and I catch up on The Missing - it's blissful (the time together, not the programme).

Although the programme is really good too.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 26/11/2016 15:36

Oh, well if I didn't have CBeebies on I'd like to watch Countdown, Fifteen to One etc. And there are often some very good dramas on in the afternoon.

CaraAspen · 26/11/2016 15:46

I totally agree, OP. It's slobby.

DotForShort · 26/11/2016 15:47

I have this belief deeply ingrained in me as well. I know that it is entirely irrational. But a part of me (silently) objects when my husband turns the TV on during the day, especially in the morning. It's a ridiculous reaction on my part, I fully admit that.

CaraAspen · 26/11/2016 15:49

Personally I don't see the different between a few hours of television in the daytime to a few hours of television in the evening. Nowadays, things are often recorded, so people can watch things at different times. You could logically say to go do something more productive during the evening just as easily as during the day.

It's like saying eating an apple is only healthy if you eat it in the evening, not during the day.

It's just ridiculous judgement based on someone's personal (and biased) opinion. The idea that tv is okay in the evening, but lazy during the day is not based on fact. It's ust a way of people sneering at those who aren't "too busy working and doing productive things" during the day.

People work during the day and relax if they can in the evening. It has always been like this for most people.

but those that say Yes Happy to watch TV in the day time and manage it without the guilt
how do you respond to threads seeking advice on screen time for your offspring
threads about childminders having the TV on for your dc?

TheFairyCaravan · 26/11/2016 15:56

Remember that daytime TV is mainly aimed at the less productive members of society (I'm not saying "worse" members of society, but the ones who genuinely don't have anything better to do during the day), be they unemployed, disabled, elderly or just plain lazy

Hmm WTAF?

NoahVale · 26/11/2016 15:57

yes, it is a ridiculous reaction from me too if DH puts on TV, I get twitchy, it irritates me, I dont think he dares much

This is why I love living by myself. No one making me feel guilty - and no sense of guilt - people can make you feel incredibly guilty if you are sat watching TV whilst they are doing something else.

When I was a child there was no day time tv. It came on at 5pm. My mother disapproved of ITV as well.
I know it's completely irrational but it feels entirely sinful to watch tv during the day unless it's the news or there is an Important Event or I am ill.

The good thing is that it's nice to put the tv on in the evening and relax.

daisypond · 26/11/2016 16:04

I watch telly in the daytime if I'm around and not doing anything. I work shifts, so a bit of daytime telly is fine by me if I'm working evenings. I tend to watch things on catch-up, so I can still catch the decent stuff when I want to. I was brought up on no telly in the daytime - actually there wasn't any daytime telly when I was young, so when I first started watching a bit of telly in the day I did feel a bit slobby, but now I don't care.

EveOnline2016 · 26/11/2016 16:05

I have no guilt on putting the tv on in the week day. I work most weekends so it's my downtime or my weekend.

Mainly crap but I get stuff done in the evening after work on the weekend to free up time for my days off.

NoahVale · 26/11/2016 16:06

I don't have live tv, but I have Netflix on in the background all day when I'm working, don't see how it's lazy, I enjoy having the background noise!
