Went for a meal tonight nothing fancy just pizza and my friend seemed mortified that I didn't leave a tip. I was paying for our meal and I generally don't leave tips. Ive never left a tip for anyone actually not taxi drivers, hairdressers, waiters is that mean of me ?

^ as long as nmw is in place, I should add.

Roussette · 26/11/2016 18:48

I've worked in retail and spent hours with customers and wouldn't expect a tip - social convention I know Smile

I'm at a different stage with our kids not little so I think it is different, yes.

FWIW this thread made me think. I've just had an amazon delivery from black friday. Thick fog round here and not easy to find our house. And here's me sat in the warm necking Wine. I gave the young guy who said he had loads more deliveries to do, a couple of quid. So I'm pretty flexible on all of this Smile

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 26/11/2016 18:55

I always tip. Waiting staff, hairdressers, taxi drivers, delivery drivers.

I used to go out in a group with a girl who always insisted on not paying her bit of the service charge. And if change was ever put on the table she'd always snatch it up and put it in her purse. Once someone had to intervene and tell her that actually, we were leaving that as a tip. Bloody mortifying. And this was after she'd done a brief stint as a waitress!

it's unfair to NMW workers who fall outside of this practice.

Then let them change career to one with a tipping culture if it bothers them that much?

Because people on minimum wage are surrounded by a world of options aren't they.

When people say shit like this I seriously wonder whether we live in the same world.

FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 19:33

Everyone has options. Some choose to take them, some choose to blame the world for their plight.

I sometimes tip if the service has been really great but generally no, I don't. I'm also on mimimum wage (I'm a qualified nursery nurse) and don't get tips, along with lots of other people in minimum wage jobs. Mother in law is a hairdresser, she earns a fair bit more than minimum wage then gets tips on top- so it's not just about minimum wage.

FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 20:02

(Unlike Navyandwhite who thinks she is queen bee of some anonymous forum 👏👏👏)

IJustWantABrew · 26/11/2016 20:05

If the service is excellent and the food really good yes I would tip. If the service is average no. My friend always gets embarrassed because I won't always tip.
A tip is to be given if the service is of a high quality.
I don't see the argument that it's because they only get minimum wage. Most places either pool all the tips and share them amongst the whole staff or alternatively keep the lot.

If you interpret my opinion as rude that's your stuff navy. You don't get to dictate the tone of posters opinions and label them as goady when it doesn't suit your style or fit with your values. My opinion is a valid as anyone else's.

OldRosesDoomed · 26/11/2016 20:12

Always tip: Hairdresser, restaurant, window cleaner, workmen get a tenner for beers, etc. Funny how we can always be fitted in. Even the binnies always put the bins back in the drive or take,an extra black sack of garden waste x

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 26/11/2016 20:17

Then let them change career to one with a tipping culture if it bothers them that much?

Using that logic, one could just as easily say, let waiting staff change career to a higher non min wage job if being tipped bothers them that much.

FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 20:21

Agreed. And of course they could if they wanted to.

VanillaSugarAndChristmasSpice · 26/11/2016 20:23

Gosh yes Fame they could if they wanted to Lazy Fuckers, heh?

Hmm
FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 20:28

Who said anything about them being lazy? Many people like their jobs, even if they are not well paid! Job satisfaction is more than your P50. Don't be so snobby to think that only the highest paid jobs are hardest jobs. Some of the lowest paid jobs are jobs were people work extremely hard day to day. The correlation is not always more money more responsibility or work.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 26/11/2016 20:29

Agreed. And of course they could if they wanted to.

That being the case, why should anyone be tipping them?

Not the diner's fault the NMW waiter hasn't availed of his/her "options", is it? Why should they get to pass responsibility or "blame for their plight" onto the diner who is already paying full whack for their meal by expecting a tip on top?

It's surely the NMW waiter's responsibility to get a better paid job rather than expect/rely on tips.

Using your logic, of course.

FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 20:31

I'm not tipping to help them out, their career choice and salary is not my business. I'm tipping to acknowledge and thank them for their service.

FameNameGameLame · 26/11/2016 20:34

As OldRosesDoomed says, I never struggle to get an appointment or a table when I need one - I guess that's just a happy coincidence and nothing to do with their gratitude of my gratitude...

OohhThatsMe · 26/11/2016 20:34

I went out on one date with a man who paid the bill but didn't leave a tip. (I'd spent twice the meal price getting to his home town, for those who think I should've paid half.)

I put a tip down and he stole it when I wasn't looking! I went back to get my umbrella and noticed it was gone (but the 5p he'd left was there.)
