To want to work in beauty/hair but cannot work weekends?

I really want to have a career change, I have always wanted to work in the beauty industry, and once my youngest child starts school I want to go for it, I will be 35. The only problem is my other half works weekends and we have no family to help. Am I being unrealistic?

I think you might struggle to find a salon that you can only work in Monday to Friday, Never doing a weekend

Do you drive? Could you be mobile hair/nails etc?

I work in a hair salon, weekends are your most busiest times in a salon. But it depends, do you want to be a mobile/home stylist/beauty therapist or situated in a salon?

I'm sure that depending on how good you are, at what level you price yourself, how you work (mobile/home based/salon), how flexible you are and whether you can do 2 or 3 late nights you'll make a reasonable wage.

But you'll be missing out on a lot of clients by not doing weekends.

Many salons aren't open on Mondays so you'd only be available four days, realistically.

You will struggle to find work where you won't be needed on a saturday.
Considering that they are usually closed on a Monday anyway, you'd only have a 4 day week.
I suppose you could ask for pt positions.

Never working weekends might be a problem in that line of work.
Also how would you be effected by school holiday and childcare?

Could you be a mobile type thing? you might not struggle as much with no weekends that way

My salon is open Monday-Saturday. 2 Sunday's a month I'll work from home or travel to clients houses for extra income. And near christmas I work later on a Sunday and do hair after salon closes. The only thing with being mobile is your records have to be done perfectly so you can declare the money you've earnt. A lot of people believe being mobile is easy quick tax free money it's not. There is a salon near me open 6 days a week (closed Sunday's) open until 9pm each evening that has several part time staff who do 9am-9pm 2/3 days a week instead of wkends.

Is there anywhere like that near you?

My hairdresser friend rents a chair in a salon two days a week and works Tuesdays and Thursdays. She never works at weekends.

Lots of care homes use mobile services which can be in the week.

My hairdresser's deputy manager doesn't work on a Saturday because of childcare issues, but she works until 7pm on Thursdays and Fridays. So, she works 9-3 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 9-7 on Thursdays and Fridays - her mum or her ex has the children after school on those days, and they go to breakfast club every day. She says that the Friday can seem arduous, but that a 3-day weekend is lovely.

If you're prepared to pull your weight in the evenings you might be able to get the weekends off.

Could you work from home? My beautician has converted her garage into a small salon, so she doesn't have to worry about childcare. Her kids are primary school age and she mostly has appointments in the mornings or evenings. Obviously this only works if you have a suitable space. Or perhaps mobile work?

It depends what type of work you're interested in. If it's salon or retail based you are going to find it hard. Doing mobile is probably your best bet but it takes some time to build a profitable business particularly when fresh out of training. I've been in the beauty industry for 25 years,working weekends is part of the job.
