AIBU?

AIBU by letting DD sleep in my bed every night?

DD is 4, she often prefers sleeping in my bed. It's just me and her so no issues with space, I know it's something she'll grow out of. I used to get in with my dad at 2 am until I woke up. Stopped at around 9.

My mum says I should follow the Supernanny technique... WWYD?

Ten year old still comes into our bed once a week or so. DH keeps a blanket on the top shelf of a cupboard in our bedroom to use in the middle of the night because apparently we take all the duvet, leaving him cold.

I presume that it will stop at some point as everyone grows up eventually.

Co-sleeping is brilliant! For everyone. And I wouldn't trust Supernanny. Trust yourself. If you're happy, stand your ground. They're small for such a short amount of time Smile

I've had one or other of my children in my bed for the last 7 years and everyone is happy. 7yr old chose to sleep in his own bed from age of 3, 6yr old was full time in his own bed at 4, and 2yr old has only ever slept in with me.
I got my mum to read the book a pp mentioned "Three in the bed" by Deborah Jackson, it normalises bed sharing and points out all the biological, natural reasoning for it. My mum has never mentioned it since.

One of my children is a very independent 16 year old.
On occasion we bunk up together. OH is often away on business, or older brother out, a stormy or cold night. Always at her request we will have hot chocolate and a movie in bed, lots of girly chat, and snuggle down to sleep.
Bliss.

Navy - well you would have to if you lived in about 70% of the world

I have never been short of sleep due to having kids, never had one single tear at bedtime. The whole family has always been rested and happy. My children are young adults and fiercely independent.

Some people just wouldn't take a partner home. Nothing wrong with that. :)

I co-sleep with my 4 year old DD too, whatever gets the most people the most sleep works for me. She has a bed that she can use when she is ready, she just chooses not to yet. Her older brother chose to move to his own bed at 3 but used to climb in with me in the morning for a cuddle until he was about 10.

I never would. Mine don't come in with me even if they are ill. I sleep on their floors but they don't come in my bed. My cousin still sleeps in with her mum, she is 14, nearly 15. Fuck that shit.

My dd shares with us most nights too, she's 4. I often get lots of helpful people with suggests of how to break the habit, but our family are happy, I don't like sleeping alone so don't expect her to either. The only rule is she starts in her own bed, so mummy and daddy get some adult time. Then she joins us somewhere after midnight

If your all happy, keep doing what works for you xx

Entirely your decision. Do you foresee a time when you won't be comfortable with this, even if she still is?

Another co-sleeper here. DS is nearly 3 and a half and is in bed with us the whole night - falls asleep and wakes up with us. He'll be in his own bed when he's ready but I'm not expecting it until he's at least 5. Do what suits you. If I was on my own, I'd definitely co-sleep 😊 Carry on!

My eldest son used to get in bed with me every night til he was about 8! Does no harm at all, as long as you're both getting enough sleep, that's all that matters

I have my three year old in with me and DD (6) comes in too four nights out of seven. DH sleeps in the spare room. So I obviously think it is fine! I decided early on that I wouldn't turn my kids away if they wanted to sleep in my bed but I am knackered

Many adult enjoy sleeping with another, and it's not just about sex,
It can be about comfort , security, warmth ( especially if a child is ill)

I don't understand the fear.

I know the author of '3 in a Bed' and her (grown-up) children are the most wonderful people imaginable.

My 2 boys snuggle in with me (DH sleeps next door). It's only for a short time.

My 12 year old son co slept with me when he was home from hospital following surgery and in a lot of pain. He wanted me close by, some cuddles, and I was able to give him his regular pain medication and drinks through the night without too much disruption.
Who can tell me that was a bad thing?

Report
hollyatchristmas · 19/11/2016 19:33

It isn't a bad thing. At all.

Quite right mind, I can't see us ever minding if our child feels the need to come into our room. I know my siblings are the same with their children (as were my parents).

At nearly 50 I can honestly say I don't think it did any of us any harm.

Another cosleeper here with my four year old DD. I wouldn't dream if turning her away. Most people prefer to cosleep with someone so why wouldn't children? It's alien to the majority of the world where cosleeping is the norm.

What is to fear?

The Deborah Jackson book has been a powerful influence. Well researched, indexed, plenty references, has been quite an eye opener for many who have read it.
