To serve this portion size to my children (pic inc)

My son is on the 75 centile for height , 20 for weight. My daughter is 50 for height, 25 for weight.
As a family we are very very slim (in 5'7 and weigh just under 8 stone). We're very fit, gym, sport etc

My mil saw this and was appalled. Said it was way way too much. My children would be peckish an hour later if they didn't have this kind of lunch (it's the weekend, hence all the breaded items!).

My son is 6, my daughter 3.5

Bloody hell good thing your MIL doesn't see my kids dinners, my 1 and 2 year olds would demolish that and still want more...

yummycake123 · 19/11/2016 20:30

Looks totally fine to me! That's the sort of portion I give my 3.5yo.

ohdearme1958 · 19/11/2016 20:30

Im imagining being tucked into a big soft mattress by Amalfi having partaken of a supper that guaranteed the sleep of the angels.

GreatFuckability · 19/11/2016 20:42

putting anything in a bottle that isn't a liquid is a fucking stupid idea. and i wouldn't be giving a 20 month old a bottle at all

Amalfimamma · 19/11/2016 23:04

GreatFuckability each to their own.

you're not getting any chocolate liquor as punishment

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2016 23:06

FrickOnAStick I wish I could find the thread but it must have been in chat because it seems to have disappeared Grin

I also remember one person saying she eats a minimum of 13 roast potatoes, although granted that certainly wasn't the 'norm' Shock

GreatFuckability · 19/11/2016 23:54

To be fair worra in a perfect world my roast dinner would be a mountain of roasties, meat and gravy. Grin screw all the other stuff.
amalfi that's ok I don't drink Grin

QueenArseClangers · 20/11/2016 00:22

"also remember one person saying she eats a minimum of 13 roast potatoes, although granted that certainly wasn't the 'norm' "

Sure that wasn't Brian Harvey from East 17 worra? Grin

Motherfuckers · 20/11/2016 00:27

Desparate ohdearme? Can't say I get worked up much about what other parents do, but sugar in a bottle has finally got me! Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/11/2016 01:33

Why is everyone banging on about no carbs- the chicken is breaded and so are the mozzarella sticks, aren't they?

That looks like a massive meal compared to how ds used to eat,he'd have barely finished that at 10. He's 15 and 6ft2 now and would happily finish off the plate and table too given half the chance!

Amalfimamma · 20/11/2016 06:22

GreatFuckability

all the more for me then 💃😷😎

?worra*

?13 roasties* ? WTAF? Who was Posting? Dusty Bin?

MissMargie · 20/11/2016 06:37

haven't read the full thread but meals used to have a fair bit of carb to pad out the more expensive meat etc
Eg wodge of potato or slices of bread.
So MIL might think it looks an unbalanced meal to her but if she does she is out of date.

mirokarikovo · 20/11/2016 07:09

My slim and very active 7yo would still be ravenous after the serving pictured in the OP. I would add a few spoons of rice and maybe some baked beans.

GoofyTheHero · 20/11/2016 07:16

My 3 year old wouldn't eat the amount in the OP, my 16 month old would (and fruit after!). Both the same height/weight centile.
Amalfi that lunch menu you posted looks a million times better than some of the shit fed to kids here at nursery/school. I've seen the menu for the local primary school and on a Friday they are given the choice of pizza, chips and burgers. Followed by cake. I wouldn't give a rusk in a bottle due to sugar content but otherwise your DD'a diet looks fine, I'm assuming they're child portions rather than adult ones.

Megainstant · 20/11/2016 07:21

I think for lunch the amount is fine. I would give some pasta or mash instead of the breaded cheese as it sounds fatty and horrible Grin probably would do plain chicken and mash instead of breaded chicken but probably similar nutritional value.

Natsku · 20/11/2016 07:22

My 5 year old wouldn't eat that much but it does seem like an ok portion. Half the portion should be veg, quarter protein, quarter carbs - as the things are breaded that probably works out almost like that.

wheresmyfairygodmother · 20/11/2016 10:19

My 5 yo would eat both plates of food easily & want pudding as her smaller meal of the day. She is 75th centile for height & between 25-50 centile for weight. All muscle, barely a scrap of fat on her. She does lots of walking in the wk.
I look at it as about a balanced diet over each 2-3 day period, if they have a bad day due to illness of parties (so junk food) it's fine as long as it's buffered with the fruit / veg & good protein / carbs overall.
I'd only worry if your child is lethargic etc. They will tell you if they're still hungry & I count 5 a day each eve. They have to get 5 to get a pudding after eve meal so sometimes there's a serving or 2 of crunchy carrot / tomatoes / oj / apple etc before a treat.

llangennith · 20/11/2016 10:26

Looks ok to me but we have a serving of carbs with most meals.

Olympiathequeen · 20/11/2016 10:32

Not enough carbs. The children are underweight (certainly your son) and carbs should make up 50-60 percent of their meals. No wonder they are peckish quickly they need additional carbs for slow and fast energy release. Some mashed potato or sweet potato wedges would make that first meal perfect.

Natsku · 20/11/2016 10:35

Guidelines in my country say that carbs should make up 25% of what's on the plate, with a slice of bread on the side, which I doubt equals 50-60% of the meal.

Shona52 · 20/11/2016 17:19

Nothing wrong with that.

Oxfordblue · 20/11/2016 17:20

where are the carbs & fat? I mean proper starchy carbs & fat, not the breaded stuff.

It's better than a jam sandwich I guess!

grinnerlynn · 20/11/2016 17:20

I dont think it looks enough to be honest. My daughter would flip if thats all she got, and shes a lovely weight.
I ignore all this percentiles crap schools are sending out.

Marymoosmum14 · 20/11/2016 17:22

My daughter eats that and more besides and the health visitor says she is tell and thin, she is very active.

Mmest75 · 20/11/2016 17:26

Looks fine - like others have said my daughter 6 and she eats a full adult plate and she's like a bean pole , but no snacking really through the day 😝
