Dyslexia, lots of fun.

Think I'd rather teach my child to spell than spend the time worrying about whether she should wear her Heelys.

OP posts:
Thelittlesoldiersmummy · 13/02/2007 14:14

I am Dyslexic too but I take the time to read over my messages before posting them. I even write them in word and spell check them!

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 14:18

[fiachrafrog - I like the name]

handlemecarefully · 13/02/2007 14:21

There is a polite way to correct spelling, for example:

OP: I have a pacific problem with my daughter's behaviour

A.N.Other poster: What is the specific problem with your daughter's behaviour?

(i.e. repeat the misspelt word in your post, but spelt correctly...)

It is terribly rude to post "The word is specific dearie" or some other invidious put down, the like of which you see from time to time on dear old mumsnet.

FiachraFrog · 13/02/2007 14:24

[thanks Tirnanog - for some reason, while I was trying to think up a new name, Bosco jumped into my mind....must be the meds!!!!]

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 14:26

Ah,Wanderly Wagon....those were the days!

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 14:30

loved Bosco too!

What an appropriate name you have for this thread, Handlemecarefully and I agree with what you say. Could I recommend the following website: www.realspelling.com for all those who would like to become mature spellers, or help their children with spelling. Particularly handy for home educators.

The important thing is to get your meaning across clearly. Correct spelling helps but is not the be all and end all.

ScottishThistle · 13/02/2007 14:54

I'm a real spell freak & am guilty of picking people up on it, though not total strangers
Surely it can only be helpful, I'd be very happy if someone picked me up on a word I couldn't spell as I'd be majorly embarrassed if I did so say on a job application!

Elasticwoman · 13/02/2007 15:02

If you can spell Scottish, you're probably doing better than most employers, even if they bother to read the entire app. form which I don't think happens very often.

ScottishThistle · 13/02/2007 15:07

I'm sure that Nanny job applications are read much more thoroughly than most!!!

Elasticwoman · 13/02/2007 16:43

Lol, Scottish.

AitchTwoOh · 13/02/2007 16:53

i am a brilliant speller (not such a great typist) but every time i write embarrassed on here i check the smileys...

and sparklygothkat, was pmsl at your spelling last night on i-sketch... i was able to copy your answers and get the points.

Blandmum · 13/02/2007 16:57

Cant spell, can't type. Life is too short to worry about it.

I spell check in work, can't be arsed to do so in my private time.

Got pissed off once when someone made a snide comment to the effect that I must be a crap teacher, 'cos I can't spell. To her credit she did appologise, after we had a few words.

Saturn74 · 13/02/2007 17:26

My lovely DH is dyslexic and has just typed the word 'fundlermentalist', which is so much more interesting than what he was actually trying to say!
I can spell like a good 'un, but have the memory of a ..... you know.... thingy, and the spatial awareness of someone who is not even slightly aware of spatials.
I bang my hip on the corner of the kitchen unit at least once a day. It would be far less painful to have difficulty with spelling (and I'd have more interesting anecdotes).

AitchTwoOh · 13/02/2007 17:30

i often bang my shoulder on the door frame... i must think i'm a slip of a thing. and my hip bone is always black and blue, HC.

Saturn74 · 13/02/2007 18:28

Aitch, I cannot bear to think that the reason may be a slight 'thickening' of the hips over the years. It is DEFINITELY a spatial awareness thing.

ratclare · 13/02/2007 19:00

was she having a direct go at you ?

AitchTwoOh · 13/02/2007 19:08

mmmmfff yeh HC[nods in agreement while eating creme egg]

DimpledThighs · 13/02/2007 19:17

spell check has killed my ability to spell. Why doesn'tmumsnet have a spellcheck?

Aw, who cares anyway?

Elasticwoman · 13/02/2007 19:56

As some one whose dh accuses her of being unable to navigate her way through her own jumper, I stand by my spelling and blow raspberries at spatial awareness.

Respect for HC's spelling. No A in definitely.

Martianbishop I have not noticed any howlers in your many posts. Can't see any problem there. Making the occasional error does not make you a bad speller anyway.

Blandmum · 14/02/2007 15:49

I get totaly flumoxed by double letters. My spelling is so bad that the spell checkers has a nervous breakdown!

I just get on with it TBH

Elasticwoman · 15/02/2007 13:20

Spellcheckers are not always right, IME. Will sometimes get the context wrong. OK MB so your spelling is not always totally (total + ly) correct, or did you do that on purpose? Just to see if it would flummox me?
