Dyslexia, lots of fun.

Think I'd rather teach my child to spell than spend the time worrying about whether she should wear her Heelys.

OP posts:
kimivalentin · 13/02/2007 11:59

thanks tirnanog, but it is very ropey at the best of times.
If only i could fix the spell check. Will have to get DP to do it for me.

kimivalentin · 13/02/2007 12:00

melloma i posted it on this thread.
nadine, i have dyslexia

fryalot · 13/02/2007 12:01

kimi - I've been nosey and have checked out the other thread. I think it is perfectly clear what you are saying and that is what matters. Don't let it worry you.

Thank you squonk. Think im having an off day today.

FiachraFrog · 13/02/2007 12:10

As with all threads that "kick-off", it doesn't seem to be what is said (regardless of how it's spelt) that causes most offence, it's the tone in which it is said.

TheEmeraldCityTourGuide · 13/02/2007 12:18

It's rude to comment if you know someone has specific difficulties with spelling.
It's a bit weak to comment about it just because you don't agree with what a poster has said - a bit like the posting version of saying "well, my Dad's bigger than your Dad!"
I don't know the context of the comment in the OP, but the comment seems a bit childish, TBH.
I think people should either fight their corner like a grown up, or leave it alone, but stick to the issue and don't resort to snippy little digs.
kimi, try to ignore it, and I hope you weren't upset by it.

LieselVentouse · 13/02/2007 12:37

I also think though this is a bit like talking behind someones back. Why couldnt you just have it out with her on the thread instead of starting a new one directed at an MNer

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 12:43

[iceberg ahead!]

I'm a very lazy speller and I type too fast for my actually ability so my posts often come out as goobledidook! It's not the greatest thing, but it's not the worst either. People should just either accept it about me or not read my posts, it's up to them.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 13/02/2007 12:54

I do think people can be too sensitive. personally couldn't be bothered to pull someone up on their spelling, but maybe that's because mine is abismal as well, but for some people spelling matters, the same as txt speak does to others.

just ignore and walk away IMO.

mamhaf · 13/02/2007 13:37

Context is everything here - suggest you have a look at the Heelys post if you can be bothered. Imho someone who's calling other parents stupid can expect some robust responses - mine was intended as tongue-in-cheek. Of course I wouldn't have done so if I had known kimi was dyslexic.

kimivalentin · 13/02/2007 13:40

And i was pointing out that if you let your children race around shops on the things knocking people over then that is STUPID

MascaraOHara · 13/02/2007 13:41

my spelling on here is shit, that's becausze I fly in, post something then get back on with work.. I don't have time to fanny around checkiong for typos and spell checking.. I don't give a flying fanny either .. oh and I dont' punctuate enough or correctly. hey ho.. in the grand scheme of things I wouldn't worry...

Troutpout · 13/02/2007 13:47

Nah...it is a bit rude imo
but then i'm crap at spelling too Kimi so i'm in your corner

clumsymum · 13/02/2007 13:54

I think it depends on context.

I don't comment on obvious typos, because we all do them when typing fast.

I might point out consistent mis-spellings and obvious mis-understanding of grammer, if only to help someone, so they don't look foolish on a later occasion when it might really matter.

I get very het-up when my son's teaching assistant persists in saying 'pacifically' when she means specifically, and I have complained to school becaus draws which contain paper in the classroom are labelled 'STATIONARY', which has not been put right 3 weeks after I casually mentioned it to the teacher.

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 14:00

I think if you are going to comment upon someones spelling you have to be very, very sure you never make a mistake

2shoescoveredinhearts · 13/02/2007 14:01

i think it is rude. unless you are joking or the spelling makes the post confusing so you have to ask what they mean.

clumsymum · 13/02/2007 14:05

doh, typo again.

'drawers in the classroom'

Tirnanog · 13/02/2007 14:08
Grin
FiachraFrog · 13/02/2007 14:10

On the other hand, grown women calling each other STUPID hardly strengthens any argument, does it?
