Not wanting to poo pooh anyones enjoyment, but at a time when so many people have barely enough to eat these days cos of this fucking government and their cuts to the disabled and vulnerable, I wish some ads would be a bit more down to earthy, and not just the Sally army ones.

Same with warm cosy houses with log fires and toasty heating when some people (including us) have to resort to being in one room all winter just to have a bit of warmth in one room as tthey cant afford to heat the whole house?

We can't afford a new Lexus so they shouldn't advertise them. Some people can't afford holidays so ban advertising of them too. And fashion ads because some people can't afford new clothes. And don't advertise expensive perfume, jewellery or watches.

plus, we don't actually eat a lot, we're not gluttony (although looking at me you would think so! thyroid and other medical probs make me look like jabba the hut), so mour xmas dinner will prob be a small chicken (we don't like turkey) and a few taties and veg.

I volunteer for a food bank. I will still have our usual christmas foody banquet.

None of the clients would begrudge it, mainly as they all hope that this year / next year will be the year they too can afford one!

I'm in the not being able to afford much and having to stay in one room because I have ridiculously expensive storage heaters club too and I think you're being a bit silly. The whole point of adverts isn't to be realistic it's to entice you to buy, there's always going to be something that people can't afford.

I can't afford to give £3 a month to all the charities that ask, it doesn't mean they should stop advertising.

The xmas food is a bit exessive but

YABU. Most adverts are there to sell us an ideology. I love Christmas but there won't be carol singing round a piano in our house. It doesn't bother me.
for you though as it sounds like you are having a tough time. Christmas doesn't mean you have to spend in excess. I hope things get better for you.

Yeah, I agree to an extent. I also can't stand the yearly 'present pile' posts on Facebook!

However, we all have our ,'things' and a feast of epic proportions might be one person's, whereas in my house we go crazy decorating! Our dinner, although delicious, is very modest.

These ads annoy me too. It's just a fecking dinner, no need to be advertising a meal two months in advance. No wonder Christmas stresses so many people out! People feel the pressure to be 'perfect'; to find the 'perfect' present, cook the 'perfect' meal, secure this season's latest 'must have' toy. It's bonkers.

Well, yeah, the point of advertising is to present an unobtainable idea, to crowbar a gap between the reality of life and the dream, to challenge the consumer to fill that gap with over-priced stuff, food on this occasion.

But, fuck it. Chicken is nicer than turkey anyway.

I think I know where you are coming from OP. I hate the commercialisation of Christmas. It just promotes greed and gluttony. People just buying loads & loads of stuff that they don't need.

I was Widowed, I haven't found a new Partner, so no couples?

I've had to rehome my dog, through severe illness, so no dogs, in ads?

I've barely got any family left (second generation immigrant, older relatives have died) and I've no Sons.

My neighbours are shit. I can't drink because of my Meds and I'm barely mobile.

I'm overloading on crappy (usually American) Christmas films, to at least get into the mood.

Actually for the first time, in decades, I'm planning the food in advance, because I'm practically housebound, I'm making my own mincemeat (and pies etc). As well as other stuff.

Normally I'm working and drinking.

I don't do excess, I was following the Marie Kondo way, before I knew it existed.

I donate to food banks each week and I feel for anyone in that position but I will still be enjoying my central heating and having my Christmas feast

I just hate all the Christmas food ads anyway and all the greed that comes with it. I see the turkeys ads and think of the poor little buggers being bred to be killed for the sake of one day.

And the toys, played with for a couple of days and then ignored.

I was brought up with cast offs, Christmas dinner was a chicken which was the only time in the year we had one and the tree was dug up and replanted every year. My toys were all second hand. I look back on it and think how hard my parents worked and saved for that and then look at all the stuff that people want and expect now.

And that is not including those houses that are lit up from top to bottom, gardens included, all we had was one string of lights on the tree. It was enough.

I can kind of see your point OP, when a table is shown in adverts with 12 people sitting around it, and there's enough food to feed 112.
