It's always halumi.

Why? Why must it always be halumi?

How many different ways can you do halumi?

Why do restaurants never think outside the box?

It's usually feta.

letmepeeinpeace · 11/11/2016 19:26

ConfusedDoes halloumi cheese smell like sheep and goat?! I cannot stomach goats milk as it smells like farm!

Chinlo · 11/11/2016 19:29

Does halloumi cheese smell like sheep and goat

No. And it does not smell like sheep or goat's cheese either.

wizzbitfartface · 11/11/2016 19:42

I'm not vegetarian but my 8 year old daughter is and has been for the last 3 years. The kids meals are a bloody nightmare in restaurants, a lot don't even do a child veggie option. She always has to have a bowl of chips and side of veg.

lljkk · 11/11/2016 20:07

I almost always order the veg option for main course because I don't like big servings of flesh.
I never heard of halumi before! Don't think I've ever had it... and I love cheese, too. wow, you guys must eat out A LOT.
As long as blue cheese & pasta aren't the only options, I manage.

Petrachat · 11/11/2016 20:09

I dream of Halloumi , we live in the south west of France where being a vegetarian is looked upon as a form of mental illness, eating out is impossible, unless omelette and tinned French beans are your thing.

BestZebbie · 11/11/2016 20:24

Pancakes stuffed with things would make a nice change, though obviously they aren't vegan. Maybe asparagus, creamy sauce and mushroom, or fried onion and tomato purée and melted cheese?

cheesydoesit · 11/11/2016 20:26

Not RTFT but I agree that it's so nice to go to a restaurant and choose anything so I thought it would chuck in my two pennies worth. Two of my fave places are El Piano in York and Fellini's in the Lake District.

maddening · 11/11/2016 20:35

I love halloumi as veggie fish and chips - scrumptious!

fourcorneredcircle · 11/11/2016 20:41

Mmm Fellini's... (used to be Zepherlli's I think?) a great vegetarian restaurant. We had our work christmas do there a few years ago. Every single dinner enjoyed their meal - even the hard core farmers and their wives who were a bit unsure before hand. Some admit they've even been back since!
Starters, mains and desserts to die for 😍 PLUS ethical coffee, wine and a cocktail bar! It's classy too... lots of vegetarian restaurants can be a bit "crunchy" for want of a better word... all benches and mismatched crockery (although delicious food).

NoahVale · 11/11/2016 20:46

i became a vegetarian in the early 1980s and the option was; omelette or if i was lucky, nut roast.

sj257 · 11/11/2016 20:49

All the festive menus seem to include something with brie this year... Not great when you're a pregnant veggie 😂

SpeakNoWords · 11/11/2016 20:53

Cooked Brie is ok though, if it's heated through.

Lifeonthefarm · 11/11/2016 21:00

Go to a better restaurant :)
We have our own kitchen garden and the head gardener is veggie. So we tend to have good options on.

Bertucci · 11/11/2016 21:03

I am not a vegetarian, bit almost always choose the vegetarian options as they are much nicer.

I love halloumi, but rarely see it as standard on menus. Maybe you need to up the ante a bit?

cheesydoesit · 11/11/2016 21:06

Fourcorneredcircle, yeah it was brilliant! The desserts looked amazing but I was too stuffed. I would definately go there again. I agree with you on the decor, I think if more places followed suit and were 'sneaky' veggie restaurants then people would be pleasantly surprised with the range of food and have less resistance towards it, IYKWIM? I think vegetarian and vegan food get a bad rep due to the awful and limited options that are available.

iminshock · 11/11/2016 21:15

YABU
Feel free to exclude the tastiest foods on the planet from your diet but don't complain when you are served dull foods.
You chose a dull diet.

iminshock · 11/11/2016 21:17

I always laugh when vegetarians rave about the very occasional restaurant which serves delicious vegetarian fayre.
Y'all have no bloody idea what you are missing.

Bravas · 11/11/2016 21:21

I can't stand halloumi, it squeaks. I do love a goats cheese tart though Grin.

Thank god the days of vegetable lasagne are mostly over though.

SpeakNoWords · 11/11/2016 21:21

It's not dull unless cooked badly by poor quality chefs that lack imagination.

Plus I don't give a shit about "missing out" on the taste of dead animals.

Chinlo · 11/11/2016 21:26

Y'all have no bloody idea what you are missing

MOST vegetarians have spent a large portion of their lives as meat-eaters, so most know exactly what they're missing Hmm

God, I feel so embarrassed for people who feel the need to go out of their way to wind people up about the choices they make in their lives.

foxtrotoscarfoxtrotfoxtrot · 11/11/2016 21:28

Here's an idea foxtrot - hire a better chef! If you're the owner he/she should be doing as you ask anyway! Not veto-Ing all your ideas!

Poor chef, I feel a bit sorry for him if this is how my request has come across. He's fantastic. However he doesn't think there is much demand for veggie food in our location, and he may or may not be right. What I am trying to do is put together an 'exciting' veggie menu for him to trial and see where it takes us. Dishes that don't perform be they meat, fish, or veggie don't stay on the menu for long as at the end of the day we are running a business.

Thanks again for all the tips. Some of this makes quite bemusing reading as so many ingredients are loved by some and loathed by others, but that's just personal preferences. Non veggie dishes are no different. Duck, venison, and black pudding are probably the meat equivalent of goat and blue cheeses Grin

DanGleballs · 11/11/2016 21:29

I'm not veggie but managed to find a veggie cafe last time we met up. The variety on offer for her was amazing and I had a lovely mushroom stroganoff with quinoa.

I often choose the veggie option if it sounds appealing. Restaurants that have crap veggie options are missing a trick because not all meat eaters want meat with every meal. We often eat meat free meals at home, partly because I would rather have less but higher welfare meat and partly because you don't need meat to cook a tasty, nutritionally balanced meal.

This week we have had goats cheese croquettes with a beetroot salad, spinach, garlic and mascapone tagliatelle, and roasted sweet potato, butternut squash and chilli soup. All yummy and no animal flesh involved.

DanGleballs · 11/11/2016 21:30

Sorry should have said in the first paragraph that I was meeting a buddist friend.

Briarthorn · 11/11/2016 21:40

The veggie option is too often dull, not filling and over-priced. Seems things haven't moved on in the four years since the plate of carrots for £12.95 thread Sad
