AIBU to hate the veggie option?

It's always halumi.

Why? Why must it always be halumi?

How many different ways can you do halumi?

Why do restaurants never think outside the box?

Butternut squash risotto.....

lalaloopyhead · 11/11/2016 11:43

I came on to agree with you, as Veggie options are often something slathered in either blue cheese or chedder.

But Hallumi is my most favourite food ever so I am afraid YABU just for dissing that.

I am also intrigued as to where you eat as I don't often see it as an option veggie or otherwise.

Redpony1 · 11/11/2016 11:43

There is literally nothing i could eat if i was a veggie, halloumi is horrific, so is goat cheese, mushrooms and nut roasts!

I'm the awkward eater that struggles on set menu's though, and i eat meat!

I was a vegetarian in the 90s and it was always feta cheese in filo pastry. Every time. And this was Edinburgh where they had some decent restaurants. If there'd been halloumi I might still be a vegetarian*.

*Not really. It was a savoury cheese sandwich that finished me. Stansted airport, my favourite auntie had just died, my flight was delayed till fuck knows when. And the only veggie sandwiches they had left in Boots were savoury cheese. "Fuck that," I thought, and bought myself a BLT, which I wolfed down, and then puked straight back up again in the aeroplane toilet.

'I think restaurants should have to have at a similar amount of meals without meat, not just one or two. So if they do 10 mains with meat/fish, they also have to do 5 that are vegetarian and two of them must be vegan.'

No. Restaurants should serve whatever they want. Be that 100% meat, 100% vegan or anything in between.

As Anchor has said many restaurants exist on a financial knife edge, so they’d be a bit foolish to create a menu that they didn’t feel there was a call for. I agree though that most places could be a bit more creative with the one or two veggie options they do offer.

choppolata · 11/11/2016 11:49

You should be thankful you're not vegan, it's a million times worse. I've been offered noodles and stir fry for my work Christmas lunch! Fortunately the rest of my team are hugely offended on my behalf and are looking for another venue. Dessert for me is always always always fruit salad, and sometimes it's the one from the breakfast buffet!

viques · 11/11/2016 11:50

This is why works outings should always be to good Indian restaurants where vegetarians are appreciated .

And sod the whinging moaning Minnies with "I can't eat spicy food" That is why chicken korma was invented stupid, suck it up.

CoughingForWeeks · 11/11/2016 11:50

Is this for a Christmas meal? In my experience, the one veggie option is usually a Mediterranean vegetable tart, because nothing says 'celebration' like spending ten minutes picking all the minging, slimy courgettes off a slab of pre-made puff pastry. I'd rather just have the same meal as everyone else, minus the meat.

pringlecat · 11/11/2016 11:55

Well, I'm not vegetarian but I will quite often order the veggie option because I really like goats cheese, grilled halloumi and blue cheese!

There are places I've been to where the veggie option has been grim compared to the meat one (and being a meat eater I've been able to try both and objectively say the chef hates vegetarians) and I've not been back. I have nothing against restaurants who refuse to cater for vegetarians, but I hate the ones that pretend they do by providing one bland, awful dish. At the least the ones who don't welcome vegetarians are honest with their target audience.

StrawberryandCreamPips · 11/11/2016 11:55

Halloumi sounds pretty good to me, OP, but then I'm ancient enough to remember the days when the veggie option was invariably microwaved frozen lasagne, i.e. soggy orange goo. Happily we've come a long way since then!

FiddleFigs · 11/11/2016 11:55

It's always a goats cheese tart. Or something involving a portobello mushroom. So boring. So done. Vegetarian food can be so amazing, but it's as though the chefs just lack creativity or don't understand it.

pregnantat50 · 11/11/2016 11:56

This made me curious so I checked out the menus of my 3 local pubs and this is there veggie option..

Pub 1 Nut roast en croute*
with asparagus, roast potatoes, roasted cherry tomatoes and roasted red onion gravy (V)

Pub 2. Mushroom, spinach & truffle tart V With truffle oil and mature Cheddar, served with dauphinoise and roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a vegetarian gravy

Pub 3. Mushroom, Spinach & Truffle Oil Tart
A mushroom & chive flavoured pastry case with mushrooms in a creamy spinach & truffle oil sauce topped with a mature Cheddar crumb. Served with roasted new potatoes, mashed potato, buttered sprouts, roasted carrots, honey-roasted parsnips, braised red cabbage and vegetarian gravy

pregnantat50 · 11/11/2016 11:57

Interestingly pub 2 and 3 have the same option!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2016 11:59

They will be frozen bought in pregnant.

galaxygirl45 · 11/11/2016 12:00

I'm a vegetarian, have been for 12 years and I literally can look at menus sometimes and cry. I hate pastry, I hate blue cheese and I hate risotto with a passion. Worst ever veggie option for me was Arancini (deep fried risotto balls)..........the carbs nearly sent me into a coma!!! There's a restaurant in Bath called Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen and oh my god, I thought i'd died and gone to heaven having choices and actually wanting all of them!!!

MrsEricBana · 11/11/2016 12:00

What did the cheese say when he looked in the mirror?
........
Oh, halloumi!
........
Boom boom.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2016 12:01

Nice line in quadruple carbs from option 2. Pastry, roast potatoes, dauphinouse and Yorkshire pudding Shock. I'd ditch the random addition of Yorkshire pudding and put sprouts or other veg on instead. No argument about roast potatoes or dauphinoise, because I love both of those.

MrsEricBana · 11/11/2016 12:02

Yes galaxy AVC is fine dining vegetarian. V delicious.

pregnantat50 · 11/11/2016 12:03

Pub 4 (another tart but with beetroot!)
Beetroot Chutney & Goats Cheese Tart
Topped with a crisp ciabatta crumb, combined with beetroot cubes
and goats cheese, served with buttered baby potatoes
All dishes are served with green beans, Chantenay carrots, Brussels sprouts and braised red cabbage

Pub5 (Harvester) - another tart!
Vegetable Tart (V)
Roasted red onion and butternut squash in a creamy
kale sauce. Served with sage and onion seasoned
roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, tangerine-glazed
carrots, and a buttered mix of sprouts, green beans
and peas. Finished with herb stuffing and a jug of
vegetarian gravy

Pub 6 - a bit better
Almond and Pecan Nut Roast (V) (Vegan option is available)
Candied cashew, pecan and almonds bound with butternut squash
and spinach. Topped with sticky cherry and red onion relish.

AlmaMartyr · 11/11/2016 12:03

Around here it's always bloody mushrooms or goats cheese. Every time.

I loathe mushrooms.

pregnantat50 · 11/11/2016 12:05

Pub 4 and 5 are homemade (or chef made not frozen)...not sure about Harvester

pregnantat50 · 11/11/2016 12:06

and to be fair I am only checking the christmas day menus! :)

I am not a vegetarian but my parents and sister are. I love all food and often choose the veg option but I am a cheeseaholic so thats probably why!

Latenightreader · 11/11/2016 12:06

I'm just so grateful that the 1980s/90s are past and I'm no longer offered quiche all the time. I can't eat quiche - was allergic to eggs until my late teens and am still intolerant. The endless spinach and ricotta cannelloni which followed was a welcome change!

I'm pescatarian and wish that the current trend for adding chorizo to everything would end.

BakeOffBiscuits · 11/11/2016 12:06

You could always go for the fish Grin
