to not wash my hair before the hairdressers

So. .I have the hairdressers tomorrow. My hair needs a wash. I used some dry shampoo in it today to perk it up as didnt have time to wash it this morning. Would it be unreasonable to not wash it tomorrow morning and instead put some more dry shampoo in before my hairdresser appointment in the morning?

I'm thinking it's pointless washing it myself only to have the hairdresser wash it again for my appointment?

thisisfake no it's disgusting, some people just honestly can't smell how awful they're hair smells.

Honestly in that job there was nothing worse than someone coming in and they're hair smelt of cigarette smoke, the next awful one was it smelling of grease and the third one was it smelling of really strong food.

It's honestly not just about touching the hair,it's the smell!

If someone came in and they hadn't washed they're hair for a while as soon as you put the warm water onto they're head the smell would rise instantly and hit your nostrils and the back of your throat!
It wasn't pleasent and it's such a crap paid job for so many anything that can make it a bit easier for the person doing the hair is worth it I'd say!

Sara107 · 10/11/2016 20:42

My hairdresser said that most people turn up with freshly washed hair and it actually makes it harder for the hairdresser to see how you hair really sits. They don't mind if it's in need of a wash because that's the first thing they're going to do anyway. I probably wouldn't go with hair that hasn't been washed for weeks, but a couple of days is not disgusting.

Oh, yuk. I promise my hair is not that bad though. It's very dry so doesn't get greasy quickly and I wash it minimum every 3 days or so- any more and it turns to straw. It also gets very curly and tangly so I will usually straighten it to make it easier for the colourist when I am having highlights done.

ohtheholidays · 10/11/2016 20:46

Totallyoutingand that would be upto you but I know of 7 different salons that are in the town closest to us and they all insist the same thing!

I had a couple of friends that worked in those kinds of salons and they have had to turn people away, they try to be sensitive and polite about it but I'd be mortified if that was me being turned away from a packed salon because someone didn't want to have to touch my dirty hair!

I've always washed mine the night before and all of our 5DC wash they're hair the night before they go and get they're hair done.

Me624 · 10/11/2016 20:51

I wash my hair every other day. If I had an appointment and had washed my hair the previous day, I wouldn't wash it before going - no issue. If the appointment falls on the day I'd normally be washing it that morning, I would wash it the night before instead - but that's because I have colour and so I wouldn't want it to be freshly washed that morning but not in need of a wash either.

I don't understand the whole oh I have a baby I don't have time to wash my hair thing, sorry. I have an 8 month old and have never found it difficult to make time to shower and wash my hair. It takes 5 minutes. More time needed to blow dry/straighten yes, so sometimes that part ends up waiting, but the actual washing part? Even if you have a difficult baby, stick him in his cot for 5 minutes with some toys and get clean ... you'll feel better for it!

Cherryskypie · 10/11/2016 20:52

'it's disgusting, some people just honestly can't smell how awful they're hair smells.'

This. I had the misfortune of sitting in the row behind someone at a comedy gig whose hair had the unwashed stink. It looked ok but for 90 minutes that smell - like cheap, fatty, lamb mince cooking - kept distracting me.

ohtheholidays · 10/11/2016 20:53

thisisfakename I believe you Grin honestly when I worked in the salon it did seem to be the same women all the time,it was very strange really it was a very expensive salon in a very nice area and about 90% of the women that turned up with they're hair like that didn't work and had no children at home to look after.

The owners told us that they were very much of the mind set that they got whatever they wanted whenever they wanted it so they would just never presume that any of the rules of the salon applied to them.
They were also the one's who never tipped anyone ever!

I did have some really really lovely clients there but that group of women were definitely one of the reasons me and a few of the other women left that job.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/11/2016 20:53

Me I used to do the same even if ds was crying, I used to put him in the rocker in the bathroom role I jumped in the shower. I got very quick at having a 3 min shower/ hair wash!

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/11/2016 20:54

I wash my hair every morning , but not the morning that I'm having a wash , cut and blow dry
So it's not that dirty
Hate walking through town with unwashed hair though

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/11/2016 20:55

ChocolateBudgeCake · 10/11/2016 20:56

I never wash my hair before going to the hairdresser. It's in the same league of madness as people who scrub their bathtubs before the cleaner turns up!

Cherryskypie · 10/11/2016 20:58

Not an hour before you go but the OP is talking about not washing it the day before either.

CremeEggThief · 10/11/2016 21:05

I have very, very curly hair that I have to at least wet just to comb and I was told off by my hairdresser for turning up with damp/wet but combed hair (don't own a hairdryer), as it needs to be bone dry before colouring, so not any more. I nearly always have a colour and trim.

gillybeanz · 10/11/2016 21:08

It's a waste of water and shampoo to do it when they are going to do it anyway.
I never do mine as if I do it too much it goes unbelievably dry and looks like a bog brush, so would rather go with dirty hair tbh.

LearningHowToFly · 10/11/2016 21:10

Speaking to my hairdresser about this last time I went. She says that hairdressers prefer unwashed hair.

TheHiphopopotamus · 10/11/2016 21:14

I don't wash my hair before going to the hairdressers just so she can wash it again. That's bonkers. In fact, we've had a conversation about it and she said not to bother.

She also said that she has clients who come in every week/two weeks just to have their hair washed and dried by her (i.e they never was their hair themselves) Confused

blowmybarnacles · 10/11/2016 21:25

Would you have a pedicure not having washed your feet?

Note3 · 10/11/2016 21:39

Well I am as usual amazed by the varied responses on MN! Some of you will be pleased to read I'm sitting with shiny washed hair (shampooed but not conditioned as can be done tomorrow) and some of you will be disappointed in that update!

I'm feeling a bit low in self esteem at the mo so the thought of my hairdresser being disgusted at my hair was enough! In truth it didn't look or feel bad so I don't think they would have realised but at least it's done now

I don't understand how anyone would even think of washing their hair before going to the hairdresser's. I thought the point was that you get your hair washed there, too?

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/11/2016 21:55

blownbybarnacles
I apologised to the beauty therapist as my feet were grubby , evening appointment in the summer had been wearing sandals all day
She shrugged and said that was why they always gave feet a good old soak in the foot spa before starting work and made me a coffee

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/11/2016 22:43

It would be my dream to have professional blow dries all the timeGrin

polyhymnia · 10/11/2016 22:48

Definitely wouldn't wash or dry shampoo it. They always wash it really thoroughly there and, if mine was already newly washed, it would end up way over- washed - fluffy and fly away.

hungryhippo90 · 10/11/2016 23:13

You know, I stopped worrying about the hairdresser thinking I was a slob if my hair wasn't washed and perfectly blow dried, when I took my daughter to a new hairdressers, and the woman thanked me for giving my daughters hair a brush through before she got to it.
It had been washed in the morning, but think v thick, down to bottom hair, with dry ends... I was embarrassed by the knots we was I'll have amassed since leaving home an hour before. Apparently it's quite normal that children don't even have their hair brushed before going to HDs.

littlesallyracket · 10/11/2016 23:32

My previous hairdresser used to tell me off for turning up with squeaky clean hair. His view was he was going to be washing it anyway and washing hair that's already clean just makes it too fluffy/flyaway and harder to work with.

That was just for a cut and finish, not colour - I don't know if it makes any difference to that.

KayTee87 · 11/11/2016 08:54

note I hope a trip to the hairdressers gives you a little boost. Be kind to yourself Flowers
