to not wash my hair before the hairdressers

So. .I have the hairdressers tomorrow. My hair needs a wash. I used some dry shampoo in it today to perk it up as didnt have time to wash it this morning. Would it be unreasonable to not wash it tomorrow morning and instead put some more dry shampoo in before my hairdresser appointment in the morning?

I'm thinking it's pointless washing it myself only to have the hairdresser wash it again for my appointment?

A wash is part of what most of us pay for at hairdressers. I once got told off for having washed my hair pre-appointment. I'd only done so the previous night as I'd changed my bedding and wanted to be squeaky clean in the bed.

mmchocolate · 10/11/2016 19:51

I always wash my hair the night before and make sure I don't put any conditioner on or anything else as this can affect the colour taking properly.

honeyroar · 10/11/2016 19:51

I did exactly that this morning. Got off my horse, had slightly greasy "hat hair". Debated washing it, but decided on dry shampoo. The dry shampoo brushes out anyway. The hairdresser saw no need to wash it before colouring it, and when I apologised for not having washed it she said not to be silly.

LaGattaNera · 10/11/2016 19:55

whenever I have raised this issue with various hairdressers, all have said not to bother. I have gone from a gym workout to hairdressers having had a shower but not washed hair they were all fine.

ohtheholidays · 10/11/2016 19:59

Lots of hairdressers now ask that you make sure you've washed your hair within the last 24 hours before you get your hair done!

It does make alot of difference to the person that's doing your hair if it's clean, when I first left school I worked in a haidressers and we'd literally draw straws(out of the view of the customers)about who would be the unlucky one that would have to wash the hair of the woman or man that hadn't washed they're hair for a while.

The owners were the worst they'd always refuse to wash someone's hair if it hadn't been washed the day before.

Offler · 10/11/2016 20:00

I only wash my hair once a week (very curly) so usually go with dirty hair, it sometimes reaches the 'stays up in a ponytail by itself' stage ☺️

Judydreamsofhorses · 10/11/2016 20:02

I always do, because I wash my hair every day anyway, but my hairdresser to,d me lots of people come in with filthy hair - not just a day past needing washed. She also told me she has had to tell someone they had nits before. Awkward.

Cocklodger · 10/11/2016 20:05

I spent a year as an apprentice hairdresser. One lady would come in every fortnight to have her hair wash. On every fourth appointment she would get it trimmed. I used to wash her hair. Slugs in a jar would've felt less greasy. 😐 However I wouldn't be that bothered by hair like this but id probably prefer you'd wash it. Anything other than a couple days old (assuming no product used, if so 1 day) would not be ideal for me. That said I wouldn't comment on It or be overly annoyed

woodhill · 10/11/2016 20:05

I think that's part of the treatment you pay for so as long as it's not really dirty then why would you wash

Sugarlightly · 10/11/2016 20:08

I wash my hair before I go but I ask them not to shampoo it

Sugarlightly · 10/11/2016 20:09

I do this because I have very curly hair, which I feel only is at it "true curliest" when freshly washed and dried (by me)

TheProblemOfSusan · 10/11/2016 20:10

I have madly greasy hair and never wash it - whenever I have I end up in the "you shouldn't wash it so much" conversation.

Which, yes, I know, but you try living with hair that turns into a lanky greasy mess overnight and trying to feel nice and professional.

But there's no point washing hair that's going to be washed, it is terribly bad for your hair.

thisisafakename · 10/11/2016 20:11

Don't understand the posters who wash their hair before having a wash, cut and blowdry. The hairdresser will wash it before starting to cut it. You are just wasting your time if you wash it beforehand.

User1234567891011 · 10/11/2016 20:12

I would wash it if it was a dry cut etc however since you're getting it washed anyway I would leave it at this point. Explain you forgot to do it last night, perk it up with dry shampoo if you can again.

If I washed my hair and it was washed again the next day it would make my hair greasy again :(

cosytoaster · 10/11/2016 20:12

I never do - I like to feel I'm getting my money's worth!

KellyElly · 10/11/2016 20:14

If you have left your hair for so long that it's greasy, then wash it.

Oh, OK. But surely you would just wet it and then put loads of shampoo on your hands and you wouldn't actually have to touch the grease as such? I can't see myself being that bothered, although if I had to put the colour on really dirty hair, I might find it a bit gross.

RoganJosh · 10/11/2016 20:18

You probably could have washed it in the time you've taken to ask about it. Smile

I used to feel (rightly or wrongly) that it was quicker to wash it in the sink. When I had tiny children I'd vaguely wet it, rub shampoo in and then rinse under the tap. At least you're visible to the baby and there's no getting undressed time. If I could manage it I'd do conditioner too, if not then a spray of leave in conditioner.
I found the kitchen sink worked best if you don't find it too grim!

TotallyOuting · 10/11/2016 20:24

If the hairdressing appointment was going to involve my hair being washed again I would refuse to use a hairdresser that insisted on this. My hair is washed every third day and washing on two consecutive days would mean I had to wash it more often for a while (or go around with greasy hair while it chilled out again).

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/11/2016 20:27

I would wash it the night before but not on the day. Bit grim for the person washing your hair other wise.

Doglikeafox · 10/11/2016 20:32

I never used to wash my hair before the hair dressers. I wouldn't go with filthy hair or anything, but it would usually be on day 3 and would be starting to look a bit tired. I'd usually just go in, chat to the hairdresser for a minute to tell her what I wanted and then go and get my hair washed.
One day circumstances meant I ended up having to go with day 4 or 5 hair so quite visibly dirty when you get up close. I was really embarrassed but knew that she would only see it for a minute before I had it washed... well that didn't happen. I have no idea why but she sat and talked about my hair for about 20 minutes, whilst running her hands through it, comparing different colours, separating parts out. I was absolutely mortified Shock I always make sure to wash it before hand now.

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 10/11/2016 20:33

Oooh gosh, I always wash and style mine before I go because a) I want her to be able to see how the style is working/where it needs cutting, and b) because I hate the thought of her having to touch it if it's not clean Blush

MikeUniformMike · 10/11/2016 20:34

A friend used to be a hairdresser. People would go in with nits, lice and even maggots in their hair. They would be turned away.
I always wash my hair before going to the hairdresser but let it dry naturally.

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 10/11/2016 20:34

And she does have to take through it before it's washed at the salon as I always have highlights. Never seems to have affected the colour but I def don't use products, just in case

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/11/2016 20:36

How does one get maggots in their hair?Confused
