To say that actually, size DOES matter?

Mr 2kids gave me a rare treat yesterday.

A multi-pack of Curly-Wurlies.

They are TINY!!!!!

It's been a while since I have enjoyed this rare delicacy, and I was enormously excited . . . I ripped the outer wrapper open* and was immediately brought down to earth by the size of the inner wrappers. I was trembling when I opened this even tinier inner sanctum . . . to reveal . . . disappointment in a bar.

I mean - what the heck? The curly-wurley I remember was a foot long extravaganza of chocolate-covered toffee glory. This was like a worm you find dried up on the pavement.

What with this, and now America has put itself into the toilet and pulled the chain, I can't see the Horsemen of the Apocalypse being far behind. In fact, they're probably at the Drango Service Station at this very moment shaking their heads sadly in disbelief at the Mars Bars.

*Yes - with my teeth! You know me by now. What did you expect?

Is it just me, or does Terry's Chocolate Orange not taste like it used to, nor have the same melty texture these days?

murphys · 09/11/2016 13:01

I still love a Twirl...

So that here would be a Dipped Flake. I like the original Flake, but it makes such a bloody mess, you just cannot have a sneaky Flake without the dc knowing about it. Either you made so much noise getting the wrapper open in the correct manner to avoid all the crumbs from falling out.... or you didn't successfully manage the wrapper correctly, and have melted Flake all down the front of your shirt.

Dipped are safer to sneak eat.

Thumb after a little search I see Mondelez does own Cadburys here as well, but I think you are right in that the recipe hasn't changed much. Lets hope it stays that way.

I am impressed by your chocolate knowledge Grin

GladAllOver · 09/11/2016 14:06

That Toblerone change is a real rip-off. Mondelez make all sorts of excuses for it, but the fact is that they put less chocolate in the same size box - you are just buying more air.
I don't buy it - all chocolate here now is from Aldi - so I don't know whether they have degraded the recipe as they did with Cadburys. But if they have, try the M&S own brand version which I have heard is good.

2Bottledup · 09/11/2016 14:20

Yeah, Cadbury tastes awful now. It was always my favourite chocolate and the only milk chocolate I will eat, but I was bought some Milk Tray in September, and it tastes so awful that it's still there.
They've not only messed around with the chocs in the box and altered or removed my favourites, but they've also added weird new ones and most are now praline which I hate.

2Bottledup · 09/11/2016 14:21

The Aldi Toblerone actually tastes pretty good and it's half the price.

2kids2dogsnosense · 09/11/2016 15:31

They've taken our crème eggs and ruined them.
They've taken our toblerone and ruined it.
Are curly wurlies the next on the chopping block?
They'd better leave Mars alone!
We'll be left with nothing but the vomit taste of Hersheys kisses.

You are right, Cigars. This is obviously a deliberate attempt by the US of A to destroy our culture from within.

I liked Toblerone in the Good OldDays, when it was Out On It's Own.

Triangular Chocolate ...That's Toblerone.

It was made from Triangular Almonds from Triangular Trees and Triangular Honey from Triangular Bees.

Now they probably just stuffit with Any Old Crapand Ordinary Hney for Bee-shaped Bees.

Not good enough

*Honey from, not Hnry for

Don't know how that went on twice. I did something stupid, I expect.

Another abomination it the Christmas tubs of Roses Chocolates.

I had two tubs. Yesterday I opened one (just to check they were still fresh, you understand). They are rubbish! All the chocolates look identical (they taste different but equally disappointing. Rory one is a cube - what happened to the hazelnut in rock-hard swirly chocolate? And the little half-barrel of liquid caramel? And then shaped like a strawberry?

Oh - the wrappings are different (colours), but the so-called chocolates are an anonymous mass. When did the horror begin?

This toblerone is a disgrace. First brexit, then trump, now this. FFS.

This is not the first time I have had to show this educational message!

To say that actually, size DOES matter?
Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 09/11/2016 16:42

It is awful. I am a chocolate gourmet greedy bastard and it seems to all be rubbish now. I stick woth Galaxy as it has more sugar than chocolate so not such an alteration in taste.

I heard a commodities trader cornered the market in cocoa a few years ago, and believe the price has increased dramatically since, so companies are using less beans and more cocoa butter and added fats to save money.

But it will lead to riots in the streets eventually, Trump and Brexit cannot compete with messing with the integrity of chocolate recipes.

GladAllOver · 09/11/2016 16:46

Corrected that for you.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 09/11/2016 17:58

Chocolate Orange. They've hollowed out the segents and it tastes like shit now.

There's definitely a gap in the market for decent middle market chocolate.

JaceLancs · 09/11/2016 18:25

Chocolate orange bars have shrunk to about half the size

GASP!

What magic is this? Shock

You are supposed to prise toblerones aprt with a knife. Thought everyone knew that!

Minstrels are still nice, if chronically overpriced!

GinAndOnIt · 09/11/2016 19:00

Will I now never get the chance to try that Toblerone trick now they've gone and changed it?

Highlandfling80 · 09/11/2016 19:06

Multi pack Twirls are tiny now.

BeBopTalulah · 09/11/2016 19:43
explained it best.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/11/2016 21:11

murphys - yes, it's a bit of a special interest of mine! I was incandescent when General Foods tried to take over Cadbury's back in the 1990s, but they didn't manage it then; I wasn't happy when Cadbury's took over Green & Black's, but at least they didn't mess with it too much. Now Kraft/Mondelez have the whole shebang, I dread to think what will happen to G&B. So far so good but how long can that last?
(As far as I know, General Foods also became Kraft - not sure whether they were bought out or just name changed when they merged but it's all the same stonking megalopoly* )

*that might not be a real word. Almost certainly not.
