AIBU?

To think that fireworks should be banned from public sale?

It would be nice if people could use them responsibly and reserve their use for the 5th of November and New Years Eve, but around here theyve been going off for weeks and even now as I'm sitting here typing this, as 12.40 in the afternoon some idiot is letting them off in broad daylight. In fact it's been happening all morning! My poor dog is going beserk. I'd like to go around to whoever it is, ram a lit firework up their arse and launch them into space for being such an inconsierate, anti social selfish twat!

They are bloody dangerous in the wrong hands, they cause distress to animals, young children, elderly people, war veterans and people with ASD. How is it possible that anyone over the age of 18 can walk into a shop and buy them?! It's absurd. There is no need for them to be on sale when you can go to an organised display and watch them.

Please can we ban them?

Totally agree with pinkie and in response I think that to those who say they like fireworks, to those who say they can't get to an organised display or don't want to go to one, To those who claim that organised displays are too expensive..... Fuck 'em. If people like fireworks that much they'll make the effort to go to an organised display. if they don't, then it obviously wasn't that important to them.

Sadly the sort of people who set them off during daylight would probably still buy them illegally, do a ban would make little difference.

I live in NI and for years you couldn't buy fireworks legitimately due to the Troubles. There were always people setting them off in our estate though leading up to Halloween. God knows where they bought them.

The moving of the goalposts regarding animals is really astounding. When a snake got into my kitchen last year and i posted about it on here i got told i was BU.

Absolutely astounding that reptile owners get more of a free pass than guide dog owners.

Some people are just incrediably self absorbed. Their right to set off explosives in their back garden's is obviously far more important than the welfare of other living creatures.

YANBU. At all. I understand people wanting to celebrate with fireworks, but do they have to be so fucking LOUD? It's been like living through a WW1 re-enactment here this evening. Why can't they just be pretty?

Fireworks don't normally bother me much, but it's annoying this evening... It has been relentless since 6pm and still going. There has been far more garden fireworks this year than I remember from any other year.

Fireworks are great fun. YABU. Why can't I have fireworks because you have chosen to buy a dog. The dog was bred to be your pet. You knew about bonfire night. YABU to buy an animal that would be scared one or two nights a year by fireworks.

Those dogs don't magic out of thin air. They are created for you. YABVU to have a pet hen decide to restrict other behaviour due to your poor choice.

It's not one or 2 nights a year though, is it.

I'm just back from our fireworks display. It was fab. Went on for 25 minutes and was free, put on by a local sports club. Why on earth would I want to do it myself anyway?

It's weeks of Diwali and at Guy Fawkes.

I think YABU. The police need to be better at responding to complaints. I looked forward every year to our own personal fireworks in the back garden with our neighbors, then as kids we'd all go to theirs to watch another set. All over by half eight.

Ah, but it's fun.
Just imagine restricting the fun because helpless creatures are suffering.

The police?? There simply aren't enough of them to deal with every moron who is a pita with fireworks.

I didn't buy my dog actually. He's a rescue who was horribly mistreated before he came to us. Not that it's relevant, and it's not just dogs either. Cats, wildlife and farms animals are also scared of them. Maybe farmers should also stop buying livestock so you can let off fireworks eh Japanese?

I just can't imaging enjoying something that brings so much discomfort and pollution.

But obviously it's ok because it's fun.

So it's ok for pets, the elderly, small children, people who've fought in wars etc, to be terrified of weeks for your enjoyment, japanesetea? I don't want to ban fireworks, nor does the OP. We do want to restrict fireworks to a few days of the year instead of a few weeks, which benefits the vast majority. Not only is it kinder to all living creatures, but it lessens the risk of damage to property and people. A firework display will respect the wants of some people who like them, and the needs of some creatures who have the right to not be terrified. It used to be that firework day was firework day - not the fortnight before and the fortnight after! Besides I'm not really sure how adults take so much pleasure from fireworks - godawful bangs which admittedly, are accompanied by a pretty image but still.

"Fireworks are great fun. YABU. Why can't I have fireworks because you have chosen to buy a dog. The dog was bred to be your pet. You knew about bonfire night. YABU to buy an animal that would be scared one or two nights a year by fireworks." dear god the idiots are out in force on this thread tonight.

So, all those assistance dog owners chose to have a disability which facilitated them needing an assistance dog then did they? Even though my dog (who I didn't choose to have but who AIDS my mobility) isn't scared of fireworks my freedom should be restricted between October and November because some twats have money to burn?

And the people setting off fireworks in the street for three months of the year choose to do so. the people who let off fireworks in their far too small back gardens causing injury to others choose to do so. People who start bonfires causing damage to the environment choose to do so. They all know that there are animals, children, old people, wildlife who will be affected when they choose to waste money on fireworks but they still do. Therefore they are the unreasonable ones.

Besides japanesetea, if OP and others had their way you could still have fireworks in a safe and monitored way, we're suggesting firework displays not a blanket ban! It's hardly a day or two - maybe a few decades ago, but certainly not now. And btw my dog isn't actually frightened of fireworks, but previous ones have been. Not buying them wouldn't have been a good solution - someone else would have bought them, or they'd stay with the breeder, so they'd still face fireworks anyway.

Report
WannaBe · 05/11/2016 22:15

Ah but these people feel it's their right to go out and spend £££ on fireworks even though it's highly likely they don't actually have enough space to set them off safely, and blow them up just because they can.

I imagine that the fire brigade and ambulance services are stretched to capacity tonight, in fact it's possible that people in genuine need may die tonight waiting for ambulances because some idiots couldn't be responsible enough to not set fireworks off wherever they saw fit.

But let's not that put people off having fun eh? Hmm.

I'm of the opinion it's not a few idiots but rather a few sensible people. Idiots far outweigh the idiots. It's a completely unnecessary and invasive way to celebrate. At the most should be one day only and organised events only. The distress they cause is just not worth it.

I agree. The other night some boys were chucking them into the road lit. They stopped when they saw me with dd though but my neighbour said she saw them throwing them at cars. It's sad because my dad used to buy them and gave them in our back garden but it's getting dangerous now.

YANBU

I just don't get the appeal of fireworks at all, pros: they look pretty cons: they are expensive, they disturb wildlife and people alike and they are pretty dangerous, even when used correctly there is still a risk of them going wrong...

Not to mentions the tens of thousands of damage a "safely lit" firework caused one of my neighbours house, they couldn't live there for 6 months after the roof caught fire.

I stopped going to organised displays a few years back, haven't been to one where something didn't go wrong, even the ones set off by the fire brigade.

that said though, I agree with the OP, it's one night a year, and if people want to watch fireworks. Then let them go to an organised display.
