To think that fireworks should be banned from public sale?

It would be nice if people could use them responsibly and reserve their use for the 5th of November and New Years Eve, but around here theyve been going off for weeks and even now as I'm sitting here typing this, as 12.40 in the afternoon some idiot is letting them off in broad daylight. In fact it's been happening all morning! My poor dog is going beserk. I'd like to go around to whoever it is, ram a lit firework up their arse and launch them into space for being such an inconsierate, anti social selfish twat!

They are bloody dangerous in the wrong hands, they cause distress to animals, young children, elderly people, war veterans and people with ASD. How is it possible that anyone over the age of 18 can walk into a shop and buy them?! It's absurd. There is no need for them to be on sale when you can go to an organised display and watch them.

Please can we ban them?

Do you have any rescue remedy or kalms in the house ? Or maybe put her in another room and close the door

TallulahTheTiger · 05/11/2016 18:15

I've got kalms but they are human ones. Am thinking of letting her into hall cupboard with blankets but with door semi ajar so not trapped- turning all lights out too so is nice and dark and cosy. Although DC colic screams nigh on drowning noises out! Am impressed with left handed texting of self while shoogling baby and alternating shushes to dog and child- stress level througj roof!!

Aww tallulah. What a night you are having. If dog will go in the cupboard do that. My friend used to give her dog kalms

dybil · 05/11/2016 18:57

I agree with banning from public sale, but maybe allow people to apply for a license to use them at home. I've been attacked by kids with fireworks on two occasions, so not a huge fan!

Theoretician · 05/11/2016 19:09

I like fireworks. If they're incompatible with keeping dogs, maybe we should start a petition banning the keeping of dogs? It's cruel to get a dog, if you know they are going to be repeatedly terrified by fireworks.

HelenaDove · 05/11/2016 19:16

So where would that leave guide dogs Theo.

You really didnt think before you posted did you?

fedupski · 05/11/2016 19:16

I've found a video from more than pet insurance, it's called woofering heights.20 minutes of David tenant and has taken my dog from barking and hiding in her crate to lying fast asleep on the couch. It might be worth a go, it's certainly relaxed me, I've got it on loop .

TallulahTheTiger · 05/11/2016 19:17

Calming down now mrsj well the noise is not daftdog yet! Thanks, for kindness!

glitterandtinsel · 05/11/2016 19:20

We've just had our first home fireworks as we can't leave our new cat and puppy. I grew up being told how awful they are. It was great. We had them when we wanted. They were really good. We had fun.

JDPH · 05/11/2016 19:23

Two of my neighbours own motorbikes, which they ride to work year round ...both are very loud sports bikes and both leave around 4:30-5am. I'm not being unreasonable but I think we should stop selling motorbikes to the general public Wink

Thefishewife · 05/11/2016 19:24

You can't buy the, in northen irland

Tbh I do agree however in my whole town there is only one display they block of the roads so it's a 40 minute walk to get there and it's in the centre of town we have to small ones and it's on quite late considering it's dark at 4 now

So we got a £7 pack specially for small gardens and the girls had one sparker each had a hot cross bun and went to bed happy days they wouldn't of tolerated a 40 minute wal then a two hour display then a 40minute walk back to the car

Thefishewife · 05/11/2016 19:26

Personally I think one easy way of stoping the chavs having them and yes round here there were loads of chavs on Halloween thowing them of the police 😳

You should have to bring photo ID and proof of address

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 05/11/2016 19:29

Isn't it odd?
Go on a thread about dogs, say where they're in a shoe shop, and almost everyone sides woith the dog and its owner. Its the owners who, dog is part of family, dog has rights blah blah. Etc etc.

Come bonfire night all that seems to go out the window and lots of people basically say,
"Fuck em. Fuck the dogs being terrified, fuck the kids being terrified, fuck the elderly being terrified and a huge massive go fuck years itself to any fucker suffering from dementia that may be reliving horrendous experiences. Fuck em all cause I like fireworks."

Seems weird to me.

"I like fireworks. If they're incompatible with keeping dogs, maybe we should start a petition banning the keeping of dogs? It's cruel to get a dog, if you know they are going to be repeatedly terrified by fireworks." And idiot poster of the thread goes to....

To the PP who said what about guide dogs, guide dogs have actively been campaigning for the ban of fireworks sales for several years now. I know guide dog owners who have had fireworks thrown at them, whose dogs have to be sedated because they are so terrified. And the reality is that there is no way of knowing if your dog is going to be affected by fireworks until the time of year rolls around. I have been very fortunate. None of my guide dogs have been at all affected by fireworks, but I try not to go out after dark at this time of year etc, and when I had cats they were terrified and I used to shut them in after dark for weeks before and after bonfire night.

MrsJayy · 05/11/2016 19:36

Lots of fuckity fucks that pinkie but yes I agree with you

My dog has never been frightened until this year.

A local visitor attraction started putting on a weekly firework display during the summer holidays. He's now utterly petrified and we've spent the better part of the evening under DD1's bed. It's quietened down now so we've moved onto the landing.

We've got some medication from the vets, but he's had the prescribed dose and it's not really helped

And YY to pinkie

Oysterbabe · 05/11/2016 19:46

My baby has been woken up eighty bajillion times so far. That is all.

WannaBe · 05/11/2016 19:53

helena and added to my previous post, if you have a guide dog who is afraid of fireworks and the owner has to go out at night I.e. To commute home from work, then their safety is easily at risk if the dog is so distraught by the fireworks that they are not concentrating properly.

A friend's dog is incredibly distressed by the fireworks. He regularly has to come home late from work due to the nature of his job. Recently he was at a railway station where there were a lot of fireworks going off nearby. The dog was very distressed to the point that the train driver on the train that pulled into the platform got out of his cab to come and check that friend and dog was OK as he himself has dogs who are terrified of fireworks. Had he been walking on to the platform at that stage the dog could easily have become spooked to the point he wouldn't be able to work safely. Perhaps he should be signed off sick between October and December? Just so that people can have their fireworks as and when. Hmm.
