AIBU about the dog in the shoe shop

NC because identifying.

In my town there is a kids shoe shop that also does haircuts for children. It's not a big shop, quite narrow.

Today I went in there for the 3rd or 4th time with my DD. And the owner/manager had her dog in there. A Great Dane. I'm not short and it easily stood ears level with my shoulder.

The dog blocked off the whole shop and stuck its nose in the pram, she made no attempt to call it off or ask me if it was a problem. I'm not scared of dogs but I'm not exactly confident of them either and this animal is beyond huge. I left pretty quickly (was going to browse and buy DD some shoes but didn't).

I don't know how regularly it is in there (I've not seen it in there before, but fairly regularly I'd say as it had been lying on the sofa in the hair cutting area, and had a blanket in the entrance), but AIBU to think that you don't want a dog that big just mooching around a shop that you have to take small children into? (Because haircuts and shoes require DCs to be present).

Obviously the blanket in the entrance is to signal that the dog is in there and I suppose people can vote with their feet if they don't like it (which I did). And I'm sure it's a lovely dog, but lots of children (and adults) are scared of dogs and even the most docile dogs could have an accident or snap, and this one is as big as a small horse!

Wow, if your not short as you say and the dog was ear level with your shoulder that's one big Great Dane. Although, I doubt it, I'm no giant, 5'6 for your reference and had a Great Dane up until 2yrs ago, now he was a big big boy but no way came to my shoulders. YANBU btw, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't have been there. He's clearly a very much loved dog and part of a family IYSWIM.

Sorry should have said YANVU

I am fearful of dogs following an unprovoked attack in childhood. I wouldn't go into a confined space with a large dog. I'm surprised the dog is happy in that environment. I guess many disagree or the shop would be out of business!

LookingforMaryPoppins · 06/11/2016 19:10

Yabu.
If you don't like it, either don't go there or make the owner aware you are scared of dogs and they will invariably ensure the dog doesn't come and say hello.

Pluto30 · 06/11/2016 19:12

A great dane that came up to your ear? Surely not.

I'm 5'7' and my best friend's (adult male) GD only comes up to my hip.

awesomeness · 06/11/2016 19:20

YABU maybe she doesn't want to leave her dog at home, it's her shop, if you don't want to go then don't go

i go to a farm shop that's not the closest to me because they have a dog....and a miniature pony

there's also a dog friendly pub near me that does a roaring trade

i know some people are scared etc but i'm scared of clowns so i don't go the bloody circus

Horsepower9 · 06/11/2016 19:30

Are you taking the piss?? You afraid of Great Danes and your user name is Great Dane?? Is this a real thread?
I'd love to shop in a shop like that Smile if it's real???

MrsPoldark · 06/11/2016 19:48

Surely the owner must realise that she will lose the business of non dog lovers. If she loves him enough to take the hit to her till then you'll never change her so you'll have to find somewhere else for shoes. Btw I work in a children's shoe shop and I'd love to be able to take my dog to work but I know there's not a pair of shoes that wouldn't be chewed if I did.

Costacoffeeplease · 06/11/2016 19:49

Like dogs? Go to a shop with a dog in it

Don't like dogs? Go to one of the millions of shops that don't have a dog

Not rocket science

Craigie · 06/11/2016 20:17

I suppose it's the owners business if they want a ginormous dog in their shop, but I wouldn't use a shop that had a dog in it. I don't like dogs.

Puppymouse · 06/11/2016 20:20

Me and DD would be in heaven with the new shoes/dog combo but she is used to our dog hurling itself around. Even as someone who adores Great Danes I can kind of understand being intimidated by the size of one if you aren't a big dog person.

apringle · 06/11/2016 20:37

I'm not from London and find it gross dogs are allowed in pubs. Also don't like them in book stores.

PikachuSayBoo · 06/11/2016 20:40

apringle. Don't come on holiday to Keswick ever, you'd hate it! Dogs in all the shops, coffee shops, cafes, Joules, Fat Face. Only not allowed in Greggs and Costa. Pffft. Who needs Costa? Gregs serve me in the doorway when I need a steak bake, it's all good.

Jaxhog · 06/11/2016 20:48

YANBU - and go somewhere else. I would. Not everyone loves big dogs.

mummylove2monsters · 06/11/2016 21:20

I see your concern- I don't think your being unreasonable , if a dog approached my pram I would expect the owner to call it off - even the nicest dog could snap if alarmed for any reason - I love dogs but I hate it when owners don't consider other people. X

Discobabe · 06/11/2016 21:30

I'd raise an eyebrow but in a way it's kind of cool. It's not like they serve food etc. Our library has a cat they struggle to get rid of Grin. My dd however is petrified and would have pissed herself (literally) if I'd taken her in to be met with a great dane! So we wouldn't shop in there.

Seb2015 · 06/11/2016 22:26

I used to have a bookshop and many of my customers only came in to see my 'bookshop cats' - but I always asked new customers if they were ok with cats and if not, the cats made a quick exit. Not everyone is ok with animals and I think shop owners need to be tuned into what their customers are happy with

Horsepower9 · 06/11/2016 22:30

I'm moving to keswick😄 Gregs can slide my cheese pastie under the door

FluffyPineapple · 06/11/2016 23:53

A Great Dane in a shoeshop/hairdressers sounds cool. My children would love it! A small snappy, yappy thing would be a different story....

Matou · 07/11/2016 00:12

SaucyJack
A shop cat wouldn't give good customer service, but would definitely get some. Grin
Shopping is a pain in the neck in itself, anything that would make the ordeal longer/ more painful would put me off no end. Plus I agree with comments that dogs with no proper supervision and unknown children don't mix. My older DS is scared stiff of dogs so he wouldn't like it, my younger DS is over-excited around dogs and not cautious so that's a big no-no as well. So I would, like you OP, vote with my feet.
That being said, I fail to see why a dog lover would want to keep a large dog in a small shop. Are these large dogs not supposed to have lots of space to roam?

Rowenag · 07/11/2016 07:10

I was attacked by a Rottweiler when i was young so do not like dogs, plus I am really allergic to animals. So I would definitely not use that shop! But it is up to the owner really. If it was a customer's dog then I would be complaining.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 07/11/2016 10:53

YANBU.

Obviously, it's her shop so she can do what she wants but I wouldn't consider going there with my children.

But I don't even think dogs should be allowed out unmuzzled either.

LemurintheSun · 07/11/2016 10:56

Dog people just don't seem to get that their dog may be damaging their business. The local High Street window cleaner has a large bulldog. It stands in shop doorways, and I see people considering whether to enter and then walking on by because there is a large dangerous-looking dog in their way. No way is a mother with small children going to bypass that dog to enter the shop. When I was temping in a family-centred shop there, I would sometimes try to draw it to the attention of the proper staff, with the thought that the cleaner might persuade it to stand elsewhere - but they just wouldn't see it - "Oh, but everyone loves Grimwolf (or whatever it was called)". What can you do? None so deaf as those who don't want to hear.
