AIBU about the dog in the shoe shop

NC because identifying.

In my town there is a kids shoe shop that also does haircuts for children. It's not a big shop, quite narrow.

Today I went in there for the 3rd or 4th time with my DD. And the owner/manager had her dog in there. A Great Dane. I'm not short and it easily stood ears level with my shoulder.

The dog blocked off the whole shop and stuck its nose in the pram, she made no attempt to call it off or ask me if it was a problem. I'm not scared of dogs but I'm not exactly confident of them either and this animal is beyond huge. I left pretty quickly (was going to browse and buy DD some shoes but didn't).

I don't know how regularly it is in there (I've not seen it in there before, but fairly regularly I'd say as it had been lying on the sofa in the hair cutting area, and had a blanket in the entrance), but AIBU to think that you don't want a dog that big just mooching around a shop that you have to take small children into? (Because haircuts and shoes require DCs to be present).

Obviously the blanket in the entrance is to signal that the dog is in there and I suppose people can vote with their feet if they don't like it (which I did). And I'm sure it's a lovely dog, but lots of children (and adults) are scared of dogs and even the most docile dogs could have an accident or snap, and this one is as big as a small horse!

my DD would have hated it and we would have left too. Not everyone loves dogs or has to pretend to not mind when they stick their snouts where they're not wanted!

Omg I need to go to a hair/shoe/dog shop!

But no, YANBU to not like it. It's pretty niche, isn't it?

Well, of course YANBU not to like it, and so not to go there. But I have a suspicion that - particularly with a great dane as they're quite unusual - it'd be a positive attraction for a lot of children (and hence their parents).

I guess small shops have to offer something a bit different. I'd definitely have taken dd to a shoe shop with a dog when she was little, she'd have been totally focused on the dog and not moaned and whinged about having to try on shoes!

SquinkiesRule · 04/11/2016 22:30

Small well behaved dog, no problem, I just don't want to be sniffed and licked or jumped on. Dog who could knock me over by turning around and taking up half the shop, I'd walk away, I'm not a dog owner nor do I really like dogs that much. I'm pretty sure she would have lost quite a few customers due to the giant dog.

MissBeehiving · 04/11/2016 22:30

Love a dog in a shop. Our local council office used to have a cat on reception. That was pretty cool.

PikachuSayBoo · 04/11/2016 22:32

My hairdresser also has a Westie! Love dogs in shops. Maybe not pony size dogs though.

GreatDaneBowers · 04/11/2016 22:32

navy you can't observe this dog from the distance - it takes up half the shop when it stands up!

And those commenting on the weirdness of a shoe/hair shop - it's obviously doing decent trade if the owner can afford to keep a Great Dane. That big guy must eat a tonne!

I would love a dog / hair / shoe shop.
If they sold coffee I would never go anywhere else - so I think YABU.

Also, dogs give out a lot of signals before they 'have an accident or snap'. Especially a normally docile one. A metric fuck tonne of signals. It's unlikely a resposible dog owner, or one that wants to maintain a hair / shoe / dog shop would miss this. I think you and your loved ones would be safe.

SaucyJack · 04/11/2016 22:34

I don't think cats belong in shops. I can't see them being eager to provide good customer service.

saucyjack

you should pay this place a visit

ToadsforJustice · 04/11/2016 22:37

Dogs shouldn't be allowed in shops. They are not hygienic and some people are scared or allergic to dogs. People that bring their dog to work forget that not everyone will love their little darlings. The dogs are not people. Leave at home. or tied up outside in their kennel

Dogs are more hygienic than my teenage brother!

MissBeehiving · 04/11/2016 22:41

Customer: "do you have that in a different colour?"
Cat: "fucked if I know"

I'm not keen on dogs, but clearly lots of people are - so I'd just quietly choose to go elsewhere.

GreatDaneBowers · 04/11/2016 22:43

navy it's a narrow shop divided by a shelf/display (with a shoe fitting/hairdressing enclave Grin at the opposite end to the entrance ). So if it's in the shop bit it's either blocking one side or the other, appearing to take up half the shop space.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 04/11/2016 22:44

Hmmm, I was thinking that you were being a bit unreasonable until I read that it stuck its nose in the pram. I wouldn't be happy about that at all... So I think overall YANBU. Probably.

I love the sound of the shop though!

GreatDaneBowers · 04/11/2016 22:45

usual I once went to a shop in Spain that was a wine bar and ladies shoe shop. It was amazing. (I drank more wine than I bought shoes)

There should be more shoe shops that are also other things.

But less intimidating enormous dogs. (Or, yes yes, I should be less intimidated)

usual please do write a book about a dog in a shoe shop - I would love that.
