To quote posters in my replies?

user1478257085 · 04/11/2016 16:31

Is there some sort of particular MN etiquette surrounding quotes on this forum?

The reason I ask is because I've been merrily quoting away and twice in about 15 minutes I've been asked if I'm doing this for fun or what's this childish repeating nonsense.

I am utterly perplexed. One of the people asking had already quoted several previous posters including me!

The way I've been quoting is to bold the quote. Should I be using " " or italics instead? I have seen all three being used with impunity here, so I am really not sure what has gone wrong in my case Confused

It would be good to know what the etiquette is or even drop quotes altogether, though my reason for using them was because I thought it helped establish who was replying to whom.

When in Rome and all that.....

(I suspect this will be consider a TAAT and won't last long - that IS one rule of etiquette I am aware of. However, it may last long enough to find out what the heck is going on, at least Smile )

Thanks everyone, I feel greatly relieved/vindicated.

Just wanted to thank you all in case thread disappears.

My takeaways from this:-

(1) Develop a thick skin.
(2) Check in with you guys if I feel I am off-track for guidance.
(3) Get proper username (CHECK).
(4) Carry-on-Quoting!

VintagePerfumista · 04/11/2016 17:14

I don't mind being quoted, although there are a few (well one) MNer who likes to quote you back at yourself just to then point out that YOU ARE WRONG and make you feel like you're in the naughty corner. Grin I just pretend I haven't seen her doing it. Bet that does her head in. Wink

They can Navy

Just some can't be bothered, some don't know how and maybe the odd one or two can't

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/11/2016 17:19

Of course it necessary to quote in bold, gets very confusing otherwise! Carry on OP!

Great new name Grin

Ohyesiam · 04/11/2016 19:02

Yes, bolding always makes the thread easier.
So how do I bold?

Trills · 04/11/2016 19:14

Well done on the new name.

I like to use italics for this childish repeating nonsense as I feel it's less shouty than bold, but who knows?

I also LOVE it when people bold my name. :o

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/11/2016 19:24

I like being quoted. Makes me feel all special like Grin. Plus you know who you're talking to (otherwise it's just like being in a room of people, shouting opinions at each other.....).

Clandestino · 04/11/2016 19:33

The OP of this thread completely failed to understand the question asked by the OP in the previous thread (that would be me).
She/he basically summed up what I have already said anyway and presented it as something new and contradicting my posts.
Just to clarify before this thread becomes a playground for passive-aggressive petty games.

Only thing petty and PA is what you said to the OP on the thread when they had done nothing wrong

Allthebestnamesareused · 04/11/2016 19:43

Ooh which thread ? Off to search!

Sparklingbrook · 04/11/2016 19:45

I am with Vintage, there is a tendency for posters to quote what you said in bold then pick it all to bits so they can tell you how very wrong you are and how right they are..

Best to ignore those ones.

I prefer to be mentioned by name in more of a chatty way TBH.

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/11/2016 19:45

Clandestino, I read your reply on that thread- did you mean to be so rude?

maddiemookins16mum · 04/11/2016 19:46

"What "..on a thread amuses me, but I just wonder why people can't have their own view instead of typing that (and sometimes it feels like they are just hanging off the shirt tails of a maybe more "popular" poster).

Clandestino · 04/11/2016 20:03

OK:

" Yes, I read it. It's one of the most read newspapers in the English speaking world, it reflects the opinion of a significant part of society."

"It's the UK's second biggest-selling newspaper."

This is just an example where I went "Hang on, did I say something contradicting?"

What is rude about wondering whether the poster is taking the piss by posting something very similar to my statement and making it sound like it's something I am arguing about?

This is genuinely petty and ridiculous and while I have no problem explaining myself, I certainly don't want to waste my Friday evening with a digital bun fight. My question was genuine and no, I have no problems with quoting someone. I just don't understand illogical arguments or statements.

grizzlybloomers · 04/11/2016 20:05

Clandestino

Your post here is way off-topic.

It's about whether quoting posters is okay on MN.

Seems that it is.

AliceInHinterland · 04/11/2016 20:06

Actually I can see Clandestino's point. I think you were essentially paraphrasing her (or his) point but making it seem like a contradiction. It wasn't the quoting per se that was an issue.

Clandestino · 04/11/2016 20:07

The reason I ask is because I've been merrily quoting away and twice in about 15 minutes I've been asked if I'm doing this for fun or what's this childish repeating nonsense.

Sure. You are absolutely correct.

This. With a cherry and a side of cream. Thank you.
