AIBU?

To quote posters in my replies?

user1478257085 · 04/11/2016 16:31

Is there some sort of particular MN etiquette surrounding quotes on this forum?

The reason I ask is because I've been merrily quoting away and twice in about 15 minutes I've been asked if I'm doing this for fun or what's this childish repeating nonsense.

I am utterly perplexed. One of the people asking had already quoted several previous posters including me!

The way I've been quoting is to bold the quote. Should I be using " " or italics instead? I have seen all three being used with impunity here, so I am really not sure what has gone wrong in my case Confused

It would be good to know what the etiquette is or even drop quotes altogether, though my reason for using them was because I thought it helped establish who was replying to whom.

When in Rome and all that.....

(I suspect this will be consider a TAAT and won't last long - that IS one rule of etiquette I am aware of. However, it may last long enough to find out what the heck is going on, at least Smile )

Surely you bold a name so they know you're talking to them?

What with it being on the internet and us being unable to see each other

I find the bolding and the answering back pretty tiresome, tbh. From the posters who only post in that way.

Welcome grizzly love your new name and I'm another who likes it when people quote!

The question was "Is the DM front page getting worse?"

My answer would be "no worse than usual" (i.e. they've been doing this forever). That's why I don't read it. So yes, I'm agreeing with Clandestino that it's terrible stuff, but I also feel it's futile to think the DM will change. It's my prerogative to have an opinion on the DM on an open forum.

All I need to know was whether it's okay to quote and it is, so I'm satisfied with that and will use that knowledge on other questions I answer in future.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Me too bibbity. I tend not to post for fear of being bolded to death when I see that going on. So tedious.

Also when you get swathes of text and links to go with it to prove the point.

Italics for a quote and bold for name checking a poster.

That could have been discussed on the relevant board though?

I wasn't asked to explain/expand (like a normal debate) just this stuff about quoting which completely threw me Confused

But it is a TAAT and you can't expect people from the other thread not to want to give some context to their own comments.

I genuinely wanted to use this thread to discover what the wisdom surrounding quoting was. I think I'll use quotes and namecheck people in bold now. Agreed, it is TAAT (though I didn't mention specifics) but unfortunately the situation arose within another thread so it couldn't help but be linked somehow. I suppose I could have let some time elapse and post under a different name, just to get the information I wanted to ask for.

Clandestino chose to come to this thread rather than reply to my two posts on his/her thread which remain unanswered.

I don't mind people coming to this thread to talk about anything really Smile but the original purpose of it has been pretty much dealt with now.

That was a cross post, but the other OP was essentially saying that their comment had nothing to do with quoting, but actually related to your own comments directly, to me this did add some clarity to your question. I don't know what the second 'childish' comment referred to, possibly the tone of the whole conversation - there is a lot of bold in that thread!

Another CP! Well all's well that ends well.

Thanks, Alice

Yes, I think I'll drop the bolding in future - I feel from all the comments here that too much bolding is found to be annoying. So I'll definitely cut way back on that.

Weird. I much prefer it when a person quotes (bolded, italicised or in quotes) rather than write a reply to a body of text that I as a third party and no idea is boring have a desire to scroll up and down and up again trying to find--

I bold names and quotes.
Makes it easier to see who I'm replying to and WTF I'm waffling about.

What I can't bear is when a poster replies to people using the @ symbol, and usually in a whole list of them.
@worra yes, blah blah blah
@clandestino no, blah blah blah
@grizzly waffle waffle waffle

It's very irksome.

I think it's bloody ridiculous you can't quote posts on here. It's a basic forum function

@feels rude. Like being talked AT.
This feels like addressing someone as you would if speaking in a group of people.
