I'll lose faith in our democracy if parliament is cut out of the process. I doubt the MPs will vote to block, but they should do their job (as should the Lords). I'm assuming that anyone who is interested in democracy has some idea of what that job is and why we have a parliamentary democracy?

The public vote was advisory, like an opinion poll, parliament enacted the EU agreements and should be involved at all steps of this process.

I'm praying to High Fuck that parliament does block this.

Why would the public lose faith in democracy? MPs are democratically elected by the public.

The referendum was an advisory opinion poll, it was never binding, despite what people think. It is now up to our democratically elected parliament to decide what to do.

Hopefully they will make the riggt decision and stop this madness.

I think the problem now is that the Leave vote has been associated with the disillusionment of the working class - a lot of MPs who would have voted Remain before may vote Leave. MPs are concerned about their seats, so anyone in a Leave area - most of the country bar the cities - will be under pressure to respect the vote of their constituency.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think ultimately this ruling won't have much effect.

Very sorry OP but I completely lost faith in the democratic process of this country at the '£350 million a week for the NHS' . And I am sure I am not the only one.

Dont know why we bothered in the first place - please can someone explain this too me? As in why the hell would they not have had the vote in Parliament prior to spending shit loads on a public referendum? It's rediculous

I lost faith in democracy when the whole leave campaign was based on so many blatant lies.

The referendum was nothing to do with democracy - it was a political gamble by DC to silence the Eurosceptics in his party - it was a gamble that he lost - he never believed the voting public would actually vote to leave. That's why he threatened to trigger article 50 the day after if we did - to scare the voters in to voting remain. He was bluffing as it would have been political suicide if he had triggered it so he resigned instead. TM is also scared of triggering it. The whole thing's a farce and should never have happened.

I read the article with relief that we might after all be able to stop this farce before it's too late.

Politics is governed by law, this ruling has everything to do with the law and nothing to do with democracy.

Our laws are enacted by democratically elected parliaments to hold governments to account and prevent the abuse of power.

I'm hopeful this ruling will now bring more gravity and structure to proceedings. It has nothing to do with staying or leaving either, it's about making sure that whatever action is taken it is agreed to be in the best interest of the whole country.

TM announced, within minutes of the results, that she didn't like the court judgment so she will call for a second judgment. Deja vu in reverse or am I still dreaming?

The whole thing is an epic waste of time, money and energy. Totally agree that this should never have been a referendum, it has been bullshit from start to finish, all to bolster Tory egos. I'm sick of hearing about how 'the people have spoken' - the people were told an absolute pack of lies and promised nothing but sunny uplands. More bullshit. Its become very clear since 24 June that there is no plan, no vision, no clue. Going through with Brexit now would be like diving face first off a cliff. Great leadership all round

The point of MPs is to represent their constituents.

Should never have been a referendum. It's not something the general public ever know enough about to properly vote on.

Someone on a blog I was just reading pointed out that Farage and Gove can't scream for British Parlimentary Soverignty and then moan about such a massively important issue being put to MPs. The referendum result wasn't a blank cheque. There need to be parliamentary checks and balances to make sure everyone is represented and not just the vocal Brexiteers.

The public should (unfortunately) never have been trusted with such a decision, as has been proven. I too hope that the madness that is Brexit is blocked.

But I also think the EU isn't all that great. There's a lot of people in Southern Europe who might have been better off if their countries hadn't joined. What infuriates me is that instead of saying, "OK, look, 17,000,000 people in Britain are so unhappy with our policies that they want to leave, and probably similar numbers in other countries, so we'll rethink some of it," people like Juncker are saying, "We will demand more power, more money, more concessions from our members."
