I only buy butternut squash about once a year... It looks so good and pretty.
The reality is that it's fiddly to prepare and only tastes really good in a soup.

Likewise, I hadn't had a pomegranate in years but it looked so pretty and seasonal in lidls. Now I realise why I hardly ever buy it... It's fiddly as he'll to eat and the pith is sour.

Other foods;
Pears- grainy
Gala apples-floury and tasteless
Pumpkin-gloomy and tasteless/ anything it touches looks like poo
Herbal teas- smell great but taste blah
Peaches- taste great but the furry skin makes me shudder

fish cakes on poncey gastropub menus. Always mainly potato and disappointingly bland.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/11/2016 22:55

Oysters are not great.
Bloody sweet potatoes are everywhere far too sweet to have with savoury food.
I do really like sushi though.

Candlelight123 · 02/11/2016 22:57

Another vote for fish & chips, smell much better than they taste, then all the oil upsets my stomach.

pennycarbonara · 02/11/2016 22:57

at many of these choices!!! Cake?!?!? CAKE?!?!

But cake should be really lovely. a cake that's not as good as it's cracked up to be is surely more disappointing than a merely okay apple.

SallyR0se · 02/11/2016 23:04

Cake that looks good but tastes meh. Nope!
Sometimes happens with M&S poncey desserts...

Chocolate ice cream / yoghurt. Chocolate mousse is okay.
Chocolate in general. Keep forgetting it's shite nowadays!

thecolonelbumminganugget · 02/11/2016 23:06

Bacon. Tastes like shitty farm smell (as does all pork)

thecolonelbumminganugget · 02/11/2016 23:07

Also, oreos = black chalk

PrinceHansOfTheTescoAisles · 02/11/2016 23:12

Street food. I was thinking just today how it's always exciting to look at and smell then it just tastes really bland and a bit cold

mylittlephoney · 02/11/2016 23:13

I second Oreos bloody horrible. If u want a chocolate biscuit have a fecking digestive one
Also passion fruit, gorgeous smell reality pitty sour globs that look like frog spawn.

spicyfajitas · 02/11/2016 23:16

Maccarons - they're rubbish.
Cadburies chocolate. It's definitely not the same

frikadela01 · 02/11/2016 23:16

Oh I've thought of another. All these fancy cake boss/ace of cake type cakes covered in fondant icing. I've yet to have one where the actual cake inside tasted even remotely nice. All style over substance. Give me a simple but tasty Victoria sandwich any day.

SallyR0se · 02/11/2016 23:23

Yes, I hate fondant iced theme cakes. Some people don't even serve them, it's just for decoration (my friend had a handbag one for her birthday that was whisked away after the photos). Some wedding cakes even contain a fake layer! What? Give a yummy cake that I can eat. I had fingers of lovely chocolate biscuit cake at my wedding, no bloody icing...

FrancesNiadova · 02/11/2016 23:34

Shop bought pies.

TheLambShankRedemption · 02/11/2016 23:34

Agree about Oreos and raise you:
Caramac
Pink Wafers
Cream Soda
Butterbeer at Harry Potter Exhibition near Watford
Kinder Buenos

I'm boaking thinking about them Envy

rightguard · 02/11/2016 23:40

Donuts.

Smell divine but always taste just... bland

OhTheRoses · 02/11/2016 23:43

Agree with macaroons.
Adding cornflakes and other bland cereals

RustyBear · 02/11/2016 23:48

Pizza, almost always.

Very occasionally you do get one that doesn't feel like you're eating flabby cardboard covered in tomato sauce, usually in a small independent eating-place. The only really nice pizza I've ever had was in a little cafe in Toronto 15 years ago.

dontpokethebear · 02/11/2016 23:54

sinister wooden buttplug

JamButtyLand · 02/11/2016 23:55

Cake - always looks yummy 9/10 meh
Butternut squash is divine in Malaysian laksa
Another olive trier here. Love the oil. Hate the taste. Will now only think of them as vinegary eyeballs 😂
Avocado is delicious. On its own with a spoon or blend with natural yoghurt, a splash of lemon juice and some mint -serve with fish

dontpokethebear · 02/11/2016 23:57

lambshank totally agree about butter beer. Single most disappointing food moment of my life. I imagine a cross between cream soda, butter mints, with a hint of lager. What I got was sugary piss Angry

OhTheRoses · 03/11/2016 00:05

Our local serves something called a "Rowdycow". Ginger and caramel flavoured lemonade heavily spiked with black cow vodka. DD, 18, swears it is how she imagines butter beer would taste. Having had a few sips I confirm "butterbeer" is delish Grin

aquashiv · 03/11/2016 00:12

Custard Apple used to lI've them in Oz but one here tasted like rancid soap.
Homemade Tomoto soup always gives me terribble heartburn.
Pineapple can't ever get the fecking skin off without slicing my arm off.

aquashiv · 03/11/2016 00:14

Dandelion and Burdoch that drink is just nasty toxins yet sounds exotic.

avamiah · 03/11/2016 00:21

Last night I happened to be walking past the local Chippy, which is always busy so I thought "yes" we hadn't had fish and chips for at least 8/9 months so I ordered 2 cod, 1 chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and paid £17 for the pleasure of having the worst stomach cramps I have had since going into labour.
Lucky it passed but never again .

someonestolemynick · 03/11/2016 00:51

Second cupcakes. All fur coat and no knickers.
Panini- way too much bread nowhere near enough cheese.
British bread.Confused - I love everything else about Britain but we really need to talk about the bread.
