Transabled?!

AIBU to think this is a mental illness, and shouldn't be dealt with by supporting the individual to become disabled?

Neither the transgender nor the disabled community accepts transabled people, as handicapped people feel a particular disdain towards anyone voluntarily removing a perfectly working limb

I am working with an amputee at the moment. More than anything else they would like their limb back, so I can well imagine a trandisabled person would be an anathema to him.

Much like a trans woman to many of the posters on these boards.

However if you read the whole article doctors are convinced it is not a mental health issue, it is due to mis-mapping in The brain so the body sees that limb as a foreign object.

No doubt this thread will go nuclear shortly though so I will bow out at this point.

Surely mamy mental health issues could be desvribed in that way?

It is pretty obvious that for the people who feel like that there is something bigger going on whether that is a mental health problem or something more physical.

I think just because we don't understand something we need to be careful not to judge it too much. People feeling like that need help to accept their limbs or understand why they are feeling that way.

I think it's a really unhelpful name but I have heard of it before.
