I used to post all sorts on here, I currently need advice on a very sensitive subject but feel unable to post it in case it appears on Facebook. I've seen others posts appear on mumsnet Facebook on my news feed and feel that maybe the poster didn't want their private life publicised on facebook? I would hate that. AIBU?

Of course you're not unreasonable in your thinking .

Putting anything online runs the risk of being seen and used in a way one wasn't expecting, such as FB or tabloids getting hold of it.

NerrSnerr · 30/10/2016 13:22

Of course you're not unreasonable. Post what you want to post. It's an open forum on a very popular website with a hell of a lot of users. If you have something sensitive to talk about and you think you could be identified MN is really not the place for it.

YANBU.

MN is not the right or good place for sensitive posts or vulnerable people any more.

Heratnumber7 · 30/10/2016 13:26

In what way is FB really any different from Mumsnet? They are both public chat forums, where anyone can read what anyone else has written.
Actually MN is more public than FB because you need to have some link to people on FB for them to be able to read your posts (if you set your settings right).
On MN you don't even need an MN account to be able to read the posts. Anyone can read them.

BigPointyStick · 30/10/2016 13:28

YABU, it's the internet.

One of my comments ended up in the bloody fail this week Angry yanbu

The Facebook posts come up on your news feed if you like the mumsnet page on Facebook. I always felt mumsnet is a good place for people who need advice re domestic abuse, health care after giving birth etc. I would be horrified to see a post about something sensitive/embarrassing etc advertised across Facebook. Especially if it could identify you. My DH and family members have never heard of mumsnet or would think it's a boring mums group so not go on it but they are all on Facebook.

I completely agree Op but got a slating a while ago on here for saying the same thing, given its all 'the Internet '!

I feel the site has changed so much now, especially with FB & the Fail, so now I stick to Telly Addicts & Gaming generally & never anything personal.

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2016 13:43

Surely there has to be waaaay more chance of someone spotting you on Mumsnet than on Facebook?

You need to be a member of FB in order to read the newsfeed.

You don't need to be a member of MN to read what anyone posts. It can and does come up frequently in Google searches.

This is not a new thing.

But anyway if your DH and family members have never heard of mumsnet, or would think it's a boring mums group so not go on it, why would they click 'like' on the FB Mumsnet page? Confused

WaxingNinja · 30/10/2016 13:46

You can see the MN feed on FB even if you haven't 'liked' the page.

Thats how I found mumsnet in the first place - a friend 'liked' a MN Facebook post and I went on the Facebook page to see what it was all about.

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2016 13:47

Trills · 30/10/2016 13:49

The "anymore" is definitely unreasonable

MN has had a Facebook page for years.

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2016 13:49

Ahh I see what your mean Waxing

Still in that situation, the chances of the FB post being about you or someone you know, are probably similar to winning the lottery.

And probably even more similar to stumbling across it on Google.

Namechanger9999 · 30/10/2016 13:50

Yes I had never liked the Facebook page but still saw posts, that's how I discovered the page before I liked it

And Twatter too Trills

Namechanger9999 · 30/10/2016 13:52

I guess I just feel it's wrong to plaster someone's sensitive post all over Facebook, at least on mumsnet it's specifically a forum for mums

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2016 13:54

But anyway if something is so sensitive that your believe it might identify you out of literally millions of internet users (and you can't change the details slightly to prevent it), then I agree you really shouldn't post it.

Internet forums can be brilliant for getting advice/opinions but we managed before them.

Beatsretreats · 30/10/2016 13:54

I've had 3 of my threads posted on FB.

Namechange constantly now and change minor details of threads (DC age etc)

Trills · 30/10/2016 13:54

If I was not interested in Mumsnet, and Facebook showed me "your friend Linda likes Mumsnet", I would just scroll on past.

If I was potentially interested in Mumsnet, and Facebook showed me "your friend Linda likes Mumsnet", I might click to have a look at it. And I might see a post on FB about your threadand think "That situation is similar to my friend Namechanger"...

But if I am potentially interested in Mumsnet then there is a chance that I am already here and have already seen the thread.

Namechanger9999 · 30/10/2016 13:54

Although saying that I did find myself on google before (when searching for the same advice re early risers one year later Blush)
