To think too many people on MN are too quick to call 'fake'

user1471524661 · 29/10/2016 17:27

I was reading and contributing to the post about the new husband whose wife has found his disgusting stag videos. I read contribution after contribution saying 'if this is real', 'troll', etc. And one particularly asshole post which simply said 'reported' like the poster was some sort of stepford wife keeping her community in check. None of us actually know whether it was real because, well, this is the internet. But who gives anyone the right to assume something isn't? Just because you, soneone you know, or in this case, your husband hasn't done (or been caught doing) it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I know someone who this almost exact thing happened to her.

So stop the troll hunting! And get a life.

And shame on MN for deleting within 5 mins of report in favour of the reporter.

Stupid naive me was about to offer financial assistance to somebody this afternoon. So I'm rather glad people troll hunt and I've given my head a wobble for good measure.

ImperialBlether · 29/10/2016 17:39

So you joined MN to ask this question? And you want to know how trolls are detected? Are you mad?

PickAChew · 29/10/2016 17:39

Get a life?

You have enough time on your hands to start a whole thread about it, user[somenumbers]

Doesn't say a lot about you, does it?

ImperialBlether · 29/10/2016 17:40

I'm like that, Maud; I can just feel myself softening!

ghostyslovesheets · 29/10/2016 17:40

they have magic powers obviously

for a new member you seem pretty quick to cast judgement - when you have fallen for 100+ troll threads come back and tell us how you feel

lifeissweet · 29/10/2016 17:40

User.... (and please, please change your name. It is so annoying responding to a stream of meaningles numbers)

As a PP said - MN know serial offenders who post inflammatory and sensational posts on here and can track IP addresses...etc. Their techies are pretty clever.

And they do not have a trigger finger either. Some threads look highly suspicious and get tonnes and tonnes of reports and the message will appear from MNHQ to say 'we have had lots of reports, but no concrete evidence that anything is amiss, so please abide by talk guidelines' (or something similar.

And the experience of your friend is exactly what is damaging about this kind of trolling. It opens up wounds and entices people to share painful experiences - before it turns out it was someone on a wind up getting off on people being vulnerable and shocked.

Nasty behaviour.

Saucery · 29/10/2016 17:40

IP address matched a previously banned poster?
Email address from a previously banned poster?
Amateur Troll whose heart wasn't really in it just namechanging?

Loads of ways they can tell. Apart from blazingly obvious Dramaz posted on a large parenting site.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 29/10/2016 17:40

Was this thread the OP's first post then? I did do an AS and got a couple of hits but didn't check the dates/times of the other posts.

Thisjustinno · 29/10/2016 17:41

It was so obviously a troll.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2016 17:41

It happened to a friend of yours? And she immediately joined a very large and open website to post all about it, did she? Because that's what people do, isn't it?

user1471524661 · 29/10/2016 17:41

FFS, the level of suspiciousness on here is actually quite amusing. I am a genuine user who has been watching for a while and been intrigued by the process of deletion/no deletion. I think it is an acceptable question from someone who is new to the community and wants to understand how it works.

This particular case struck a nerve with me because of what happened to my friend and now I am worried there is someone out there tearing herself apart over something that was genuine. But if MN know there isn't, I will stop worrying.

And if this post is against the rules, someone is welcome to delete.

Oh Imperial I wont be caught out again.
Fool me once and all that Halloween Wink

SamhainSoubriquet · 29/10/2016 17:42

TSSDNCOP

(That's right isn't it?

Course MNHQ are not going to tell you how they do it. That will help the trolls

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2016 17:42

Anyway TSSDNCOP. Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2016 17:43

Great minds!

SamhainSoubriquet · 29/10/2016 17:43

Haha cross post! And I did get it right! Go me Grin

lifeissweet · 29/10/2016 17:43

So watch a bit longer and you will see trolls all over the bloody shop.

MN have far, far too much experience at weeding out nutters for my liking.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 29/10/2016 17:44

Email address from a previously banned poster?

Would a PBP really be able to re-register using the same e-mail address?

M0stlyHet · 29/10/2016 17:44

It was the level of gratuitous bordering on pprnographic detail coupled with the insistence that "she" wasn't leaving that made me think "yeah, right". Best deletion message in ages though. Doubt this op is on the level either.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 29/10/2016 17:45

Ah wait until you've read the troll threads about every topic there is and then try to retain your credulous ways.
Children in hospital with leukemia, dead children, seriously ill babies, people who have no electric or food or money, friends, family or anything to sell and choose to join MN.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 29/10/2016 17:46

@user1471524661

No, not my post. But I just really felt for her as my friend went through pretty much exactly what was described, but found put over 10 years later when her husband's friend let slip and he had to admit. She stayed because so much time had passed. But she went through hell for months because of it.

So, how does MN know it was definitely a troll? First time posters / weird usernames is not a definitive answer. I am genuinely interested in knowing.

TSSDNCOP - in other words MN don't routinely say "well, we know it was a troll because they did this thing and they also did this."
Because that helps trolls to work out how to troll, do you see?
in terms of "reported" some folk feel the need to say that - but we URGE people to report ANYTHING they think may be a bit off - even if makes them feel a bit weird - reporting is confidential and we look at EVERY one that comes in.

Very warm welcome to you User1471524661 - - may we suggest thatyou change your nickname to something that reflects a bit more of your personality?
Do let us know if there's anything else with which we can help, we at HQ work bloody hard to make this a fun place to hang out.

user1471524661 · 29/10/2016 17:46

Wow, there are some bitchiness out there. It was a genuine question which I am sure MN can tell somehow via their IP checker. I guess many of these responses answer my question about the process on here. Thank you to the polite, helpful responses for explaining the situation.
